    I feel like this is what Online is still missing. World-building and character development is very important indeed, and whilst the story had that in spades, and even made some of the most trivial side-content feel impactful in some way or another, Online falls flat on its face due to the repetitive nature of its side-content, and especially its main content.

    Bad honor could have been so much more. Imagine, the lower your honor, and higher your bounty, people start recognizing and fearing you. Saloons empty when you step in, people run in their houses when they see you approaching, people afraid of making eye contact, people giving you free things out of fear, people and even policemen straight up refusing to fight you and run away due to your reputation. If you won't have me be a Lucky Luke style gunslinger, in regard to the story missions that force you into illegal actions, at least let me become a scourge of the west; a feared outlaw. Also, when going for realism, infinite spawning police forces in places like Rhodes might not be such a good idea. Would be interesting to be able to wipe out the law for a large period of time and watching crime go rampant in a town, while also making shootouts winnable and more realistic. The way things are right now you either run away or die eventually.

    One more dimension to the story I think you missed is Micah's death and how it leads into the events of RDR1. With Micah, his spy, dead, Edgar Ross hunts down the man responsible for it so he could still have a lead on finding and killing Dutch, just as Milton was tasked to do previously. If John had listened to Abigail and fully let go of his past as a vengeful gunslinger, Ross would have had no reason to hunt him down, kidnap his family, and set into motion the events of RDR1. John's irrational need for revenge and to break away from the stagnant domestic life he established for himself and his family causes him to take up arms once again, precisely what Arthur attempted to keep him from doing. Arthur was a bad man turned good, but his attempts to break the cycle of redemption ultimately fail with John when his hunting down of Micah eventually lead to his own death at the hands of Ross. Looking at the big picture, John's failure to break the cycle of redemption then leads to his own son, Jack, leading exactly the life both John and Arthur tried to save him from. Its very likely Jack ends up unceremoniously murdered because of his life decisions as well, probably while seeking a redemption of his own. This cycle of (red dead) redemption is the true overarching plot of the series.

    Thats a really smart way to look at it, definitely some things I missed, but the only difference I would make to that theory is with Jack. Jack dosent just die in the end, he breaks the cycle himself, he is always so happy when he is a child in RDR2, which leads on to him not going further after avenging johns death, I like to think it ends there, we see in rdr2 that he is a good kid with a kind heart, but with his father's arrogance, which sets him in motion for revenge, but what separates this from John and Arthur's story, is that jack actually succeeds. Jack breaks the cycle of revenge, he grew up surrounded by it, saw his family molded by it, yet broke the cycle.

And that’s saying something, since there wasn’t THAT much which was super new to the mechanics in the game. It was newer, shinier, and prettier than the last, but it was just more of the last. But that *more* was certainly much *better*, *more fun*, and felt somehow exponentially *redder*, *deader* and *more redemptier*.

He really is the best part of the game in my opinion and as you said the moment at 39:06 is just so godamn good, the music, Arthur's situation... everything. And I also got to agree on the game restrictivness being too much, I've never bought this recent narrative that I seem to be seeing everywhere of "iF iTs LiNeAl iS bAd" but RDR2 takes lineality way too far during missions, I know Rockstar wants us to play the game the way they think is the best but jeez the handholding gets ridiculous at some points as you remark on the video.

    True, but I never understood what difference it makes to loot a corpse of a dead enemy and that of a dead stranger. Both cases are essentially stealing and neither of those dead guys need that shit anymore, lol. There's not much moral ground behind saying it's dishonorable to loot the corpse of an unlucky traveller killed by someone else but it's honorable to loot the corpse of a guy you killed just because he was a member of an enemy gang. The honor system is fucked up in several similar points. Like when you're just collecting stuff (e.g. herbs) near the camp of a stranger, he starts shooting at you so you defend yourself - and lose honor. How exactly is defending your life dishonorable when you weren't the one who started shooting first? What are you supposed to do when a trigger happy random bastard tries to kill you? Run away? Veeeeery honorable! Also, if you antagonize a stranger to a point where he starts shooting at you, and you kill him, you lose honor. OK fine I can understand that you started the conflict verbally and it's bad. However, many times you are verbally insulted by strangers for no good reason at all (they can actually say very irritating things) but if you shoot them, again, you are the one who loses honor. Following the logic of the previous case, you did NOT start the conflict so you shouldn't lose honor. Etc.

    The slow pacing of some missions in Act III is a valid critique, but at the same time, it makes a lot of sense in the context of Arthur's character arc. By that time, Arthur is disillusioned with Dutch and he knows he's dying so he's trying to find some meaning in his life by helping other people. He starts helping Native Americans, the sister, the random people he meets and even the son of the guy from whom he got TB. These slow missions make a lot of sense from the narrative point of view. They also serve as nice breaks from massive shooting galleries that happen all the time in Act III.

  • @walkerfrederick2525
    @walkerfrederick25254 жыл бұрын

    There's a lot of good points in this video throughout. Lots and lots. One disagreement I do have is how you talk about the downside of introducing new main characters late into the game, and how it slows the game down when you want to get to the end. Rains Fall and Eagle Flies are two incredibly important characters, simply for Arthur's development toward the end, which is where the main shift in his desire and moral compass comes (Acts 5&6.) Rains Fall is someone helpless and needy and a dying Arthur wants to make amends in his life for the wrong things he knows he's done. RDR2 story isn't just simply about rootin, tootin, an shootin (yes it's incredibly fun and addicting,) it's a tale on morality and the importance of realizing your mistakes in life and doing what you can to rectify that before you die. I'm sure you understand that, but the introduction of these main characters is what really shifts Arthur's view. One thing you say is "It would've served Arthur's character arc better." That's just incorrect. You do address how Arthur understands the world better after his conversation with Charles, which kind of contradicts your original point. He doesn't come to this realization til late in the game, and it's these new main characters that help bring that realization to life even more. Arthur is a very different person by the end of the game, and characters like Rains Fall are why he makes such a moral shift. If these characters had been around since Act 1 or 2, there wouldn't be much of a change in Arthur by the end of the game. Yes, there are characters you help throughout the early stages of the game, and do nice things for. But Arthur isn't dying and he literally doesn't see the merit of it, because his whole life has been about robbing and killing. He beats people senseless for not paying the debts back in Acts 2&3, but by Act 6, you're literally giving your own money away to the needy people. If you were required (by the game) to help them (RF & EF) that early on, you wouldn't feel like Arthur really was a different person by the end. It's the helplessness of these characters, the stage of Arthur's health, and the wisdom shared by the characters that gives Arthur a new sense as to what is important in life. Just my thoughts. Even though it was a small part of the video, I thought I would address it and try to get a dialog going. If you do have something to say, please be respectful, it makes the discussion much better for all :)

    "stopped giving you stuff to do" This is literally one of, if not the most, content filled game ever made. The amount of hours you can put in doing everything is absolutely insane. That's a really REALLY cheap criticism considering it can technically be applied to every game as all games have an "end" where all you're doing is slight variations of the same activity. Which isn't a bad thing but it's inevitably where you'll end up. Video games aren't endless content pits. Everything eventually gets experienced so it's about how enjoyable it is to experience those things. In the case of RD2 it's so fun we do it over and over again.

    Great video and I would say I agree with most of this except: 1. I can't say it's worse playing it after the first game. I like the allusions it makes toward it, i.e. seeing how John got his scars, Jack and Ross meeting on a river bank, Uncle resting right where we know he will die, John posing like he does on the first game's box (though maybe that one's a bit too blatant). It does restrict the plot, but so is the mere nature of prequels. 2. Micah is a great villain. I don't think I've ever hated an antagonist as much as him. He's loyal only to himself, bigoted, greedy, ultra-violent, and ratting on the gang to the Pinkerton's while manipulating Dutch, causing his decent into madness, as well as gang member's deaths (including Hosea), and the eventual downfall of the Van Der Linde Gang. Nothing is perfect when knitpicked to such an extent but perfection doesn’t make something a masterpiece. I was watching the Dark Knight the other day and I noticed lots of little goofs (like Joker’s suspenders “magically” changing position between shots) but if you let those ruin the experience that’s on you. That doesn’t make the film less of a masterpiece The game has clearly resonated with so many on a level beyond most games and even films. For me it’s left an indelible impression well after playing. I can go to a town and kill everyone rob everything and kill all the police chasing me and yeah I’ll have to pay off the bounty (which if I kill everyone who’s gonna post a bounty elsewhere?) but it I want good honor I’ll just go fishing for like 20 mins while always releasing the fish and my honor will go all the way to good. My biggest issue with the game was the repetitive mission design. It often consisted of riding to a location, something goes wrong, shoot people, shoot people on horse, escape, return to camp. It’s worth noting I didn’t really notice this until my second playthrough. However, I’ve beaten the game three times, which goes to show how good the story here is.

    To me the review sounded like it was coming from someone who rockstar didnt make this game for. He talks about how the mechanics arent really "fun" but it seemed to me rockstar was going for immersion. So in gunplay we have snap to aim because trying to maintain realism in 3rd person makes it really hard to shoot well (red dead revolver had good gunplay put it definitely looked goofy), so with snap to aim its not really us who is a legendary gunslinger, but aurthur. Were only watching or being immersed into the story of aurthur we ourselves are not aurthur. In many ways this game is an homage to the spaghetti western not really the glory days of john wayne or the gritty depressing realism of the modern revisionist western. In this way rockstar is retreading the hay day of Sergio Leonie, legendary gunslingers, huge beatiful open scenery, and also a slow very slow story and play. This review seems to focus on if the mechanics are fun, is the story fun? I disagree that is the point the game is immersive, we feel invested into the game and the characters and the world, it does not neccesarily need to be immediately "fun". In the end this review appears to me to come from someone who wanted RDR to be more like GTA, and just because he published a review that is contrarian doesnt make it true. It means he has a opinion, but in my opinion his opinion is wrong.

    10:42 The weapon wheel isn't the only menu that seems to be deliberately designed to infuriate the user. The outfit changing menu is equally infuriating and results in the player spending ~45 minutes fucking around with it every time you want to change your hat. It won't let you save outfits half the time. Some days it lets you save 3 different ones, others just 4. It makes no sense. Also there are a bunch of different outfit menus that you constantly have to toggle through, since eqquiping an outfit in one menu removes it from another menu. And equipping an outfit anywhere removes it from your horse for some reason and so you'll have to toggle to another to put it back on. It makes ZERO sense. It seems like it's designed to make you not want to use it. What was Rockstar thinking?
