I FRIGGIN DON'T GET IT!!! What has Rockstar developers been doing all this TIME? IT'S INCREDIBLY DISSAPOINTING that it's the people who are fixing the game now sharing this information. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE before the game launch! IT'S THE NORMAL THING to have FEEDBACK from people who plays it, and they delivered this fail of a game! Wasting my time trying to make the experience better! I was expecting a fast action packed experience like RDR1, they also messed with that too! And changed it to boring, slow and repetitive! SO SUMMARY: 1) Lack of direction in the start of the story, slow and boring (unlike RDR1) 2) Lack of getting feedback from players (did they even use game testers? Or played themselves? I'm almost seriously asking, can you believe it?), resulting in now everyone complaining about the controls and the repetitive game mechanics. 3) The main character lacks the COOL FACTOR. In RDR1 we got Jhon Marston, the guy had a cool look, cool moves, cool voice, cool understandable backstory. And now in RDR2 what do we get? The old Arthur Morgan, outlaw with no real emotional connection to his story and sense of being. Not cool Rockstar, not cool. - - - - Bonus: 4) It's insane to make the players hold the friggin A button to make silly actions like brushing your horse hair, and the same for MULTIPLE many other small actions!!! AT LEAST give the option to just press it, NOT hold it. For me, this is Rockstar BIGGEST FAIL. And I am a passionate person who loves great games! xxx

why i don't use first person for this game is because you miss all the glorious animations and effort they put into this game you cannot see your beard you cannot see your custom guns holstered you cannot see his cool weapon flip when holstering a sidearm, you cannot see all the mud that covers you, you cannot see the blood that soaks on your clothes when carrying a carcass, you cannot see arthur' s sometimes hilarious reactions to things, there is just so much to admire in this game in third person that i feel first person totally ruins it. Although i will say it is helpful for looting in tight congested places. It definitely is really fun for short bursts though but eventually i always want to go back to see everything the game has to offer that gets completely cut off from view when stuck in first. My opinion though.

Also, turn down “tap to hold delay” all the way down so there’s no input lag. This works for me at least, because before I turned it all the way down, I suffered input delay when pressing the L3 to run.

vaggelis Tsourmas agreed, the way the camera works when moving is annoying as hell. You gotta change direction with LS instead of with RS like most FPS

Quick tip!!! Strategy guide recommends the "sharpshooter technique" for headshots. When you aim and lock on to someone, as soon as the reticle is about to shrink, you flick the right stick up sloftly and press RT right after to get headshot kills. It takes practice and its with default aim controlls, but it feels so much better mastering the technique. Hope this helps!

Keep the look sensitivity same as aim sensitivity (for muscle memory) at about 80%, deadzone 0, acceleration about 80% and turning to horse relative instead of camera relative.did these in first 5 mins of starting the game itself.enjoy

Try holding down ur A button while riding and it should maintain a speed you like. Tap to the speed and then hold it down to maintain. It's great. Also thanks for the setting suggestions, they improved my play

After I adjusted these, the FPS mode has become my favorite way to play Red Dead 2. Let me explain... the way the settings are now are clunky and jarring. You need to set the control scheme to FPS and go into the camera and turn the Auto Leveling off. This allows you to control the character the same way you would in a Battlefield game. There is no more clunkiness and it brings up the enemies close to where you can see the gruesome effects of your shots. It also allows you to see what you're aiming at because the 3rd Person mode has the camera so far back that it's hard to see your target. Plus, while you're aiming in FPS mode, mash down on your D Pad and you will aim DIRECTLY DOWN YOUR SIGHTS. This is BY FAR the most fun way to play and shoot in Red Dead. YOU HAVE TO EXPERIENCE IT to see what I'm talking about. You can purchase different and unique gun sights at the Gunsmith and aiming down your sights is the only way to enjoy your new sight. Plus, it's realistic and much more fun! (I have it set up where it switches to 3rd person mode when I get on my horse because this is the where that mode fits and works best. When I get off my horse, it automatically switches back to First Person)"

yup I play in FPP, the only thing I had to change was auto-leveling. Just turned that off so I can freely control where the camera goes without it automatically shifting. I also had to turn off FPP for when on horse and vehicles because its confusing. Also you don't need to "pump up field of view a lot" like he says unless you get motion sickness easily. standard controls and FOV are perfect.

Would've helped tons when the game first came out and I was accidentally shooting people trying hold L2 to bring up conversations 😂. I had to start my whole game over then found these settings myself.

Even with that, in Rockstar games you can tap the button to sprint. If you tap it in time with the steps, stamina drains more slowly.

Guys also if you enjoy first person mode go into camera settings and turn first person cover off. This reminds me of how the cover system works in deus ex which imo was the best first person cover system.

For the most part controls are fine, you just have to be aware of some conflicting buttons where multiple actions are available at times for the same button. Tapping X/A is fine for me, Narrow on auto aim is like full auto and wide will just put it near the enemy for a semi auto. The other setting and the sliders make you able to customise it more to your taste, Normal and full slider = full auto aim, wide is useless in a crazy gun fight, those settings are more for PC users I think, it's just easier for them to leave those settings in for you to play with.

you can also just change the sprinting to toggle on and off rather than what you suggest.

The most annoying thing is losing your loadout when getting off your horse with John you can be aiming your rifle while horse back and as soon as you step foot off of your horse you lose the rifle.

Narrow, wide and normal are the amount of distance horizontally it takes for your lock on to grab hold of the target. First person is a gimic, only faster and useful for sniping. Hold the A button while aiming and shooting in third person for faster strafe/movement. Aim sense and look are preferance. Just know aim sensitivity does not effect lock on sensitivity but does effect how fast you turn around after shooting and diving. Aim assist strength has nothing to do with lock on strength. It's the drag strength when your reticle is on target, more of a free aim preference. Personally I have dead zone at 0, acceleration at max, Aim sense max, look sense max, wide aim and aim assist max. This is what a large majority of competitive lock on players will use when online hits. As for free aim, it's better to tweak until it feels comfortable.

I like button mashing, it makes it feel like the gameplay is becoming more fast paced.

Yeah if only we would get 60fps which would be a massive approvement I.E Gta Online with 60fps free aim is alot more appealing at least for me but with 30fps I'd stick to auto aim

Okay, I feel the need to explain something that I doubt many people truly understand. Deadzones are a GOOD thing, not a bad thing. It is impossible for manufacturers to make a controller that will be perfectly centered, and the programs are extremely sensitive when it comes to movement. So if you ever had the stick-drift issue, where your character for some reason keeps walking very slowly in one particular direction, this is because the game does not have a deadzone for the controller. The concept is simple, it makes a deadzone that when you move the analog stick in that direction by just a hair, your character won't start moving until it reaches past the deadzone. The issue is, rockstar doesn't provide this deadzone for movement, only for camera control... which annoys me... Because I end up with situations when I go to stop my horse, and she pulls to the left because my left analog stick tends to drift a bit more to the left than the right. This has resulted in people running into me and literally knocking me and my horse to the ground and running over us with a wagon, all because my horse turned left instead o stopping while facing forward. I felt the need to mention this, because I keep seeing people complain about the deadzone option, when in all actuality its a GREAT addition to the game and we actually need another slider for the left analog stick to resolve stick drift.

Personally I prefer playing with spamming A/X because it makes me feel like I’m actually legging it. It pumps me up in online showdowns, but you can have your picks

the controls are okay, the only problem concerning the controls is the extremely butt-ass aiming system. playing the game in free-aim makes it an unbearable mess, and to tack onto that shitstorm you have camera shaking(aim shaking too) and the fact that people make all these slight and sudden little movements that will completely fuck up your shots

Yea, idk why they never let you run inside the building. Then opening cabinets and drawers takes forever. They should have a “Loot everything in house” option and then a quick animation showing him ransack the place. At least the loot button and exchange weapons button isn’t the same button like on FC5. That's why I'm glad I have an X button.

They do so extra in RDR2 like why can I only use hair tonic at certain times it says I don't have it when I just bought 3 of em and how the hell do I give my horse the medicine???

Teddy From the block the horse thing annoyed me too, you have to be on the horse to give them food/medicine, press L1 to bring up the item wheel then go past Weapons and Items along to Horse Items and pick it from there, and most importantly you can’t be moving any faster than a trot, otherwise it doesn’t apply the item and doesn’t even tell you why lol

kid Maybe not a good idea to be eating when sprinting lol? But you can feed horse when standing next to him using L1 as well just toggle to Horse tab like you are on the horse.

I hate the shooting in this game, its my only complaint. The bounty hunters are ruthless because they are random and arent part of the story. I feel like my deaths are unfair sometimes because of it lol

The shootings so fun turn off aim assit and youll see... also the bounty hunters are fun to shoot and if you dont like them stop breaking laws or at least gerting caught breaking laws

Free aim is the only way, auto on rockstar games makes it pointless, you might as well watch a movie

Hard to use free aim when all of the AI have auto aim & your camera gets wobbly after being shot at a few times. I'll definitely be trying free aim out online though

This is why i practice in story with free aim so when online comes out i'm already comfortable with it. Also dead eye makes it easy enough and as long as you go from cover to cover the ai actually struggles to land hits

Agreed idk if it's just me and not playing a game like RDR on console but i found free aiming and not using aimlock sluggish as hell

I have aim acceleration down along with the dead zone and both sensitivitys high to stop it feeling sluggish. But its all personal preference, i prefer to have complete control, i dont like that snapping feeling as for me it takes some of the immersion away also you feel like a bad mfker when you take a group out quickly knowing you did all the work in regards to aiming. But some big cons are it takes a lot more effort and you have to think about positioning all the time. I completely understand why people prefer auto aim etc though i was just throwing some banter
