    Congratulations to Ireland as they deserved to with The Grand Slam in 2023. All (most) fans want to see a game of rugby with all players on the field of play, with the game finely balanced having F. Steward sent off for an innocuous split second of self-preservation belittles our wonderful game. Such incidents have to be reviewed in real-time to fully appreciate the circumstances of the incident. F. Steward is not a dirty player nor does he play with the intent to injure fellow players. Shame on the officials who under extreme pressure, continue to make bad calls for the game and fans. its one of those annoying red cards where yeah its a red on paper, there was contact to the head but it seems to come down to each individual refs interpretation of mitigation and even if a TMO advised differently refs on the field have the power to say no that's my opinion and I'm sticking with it so you'd wonder what is the point. Have no doubt another 6N ref wouldn't have given any card there. I don't think reducing red cards is the solution either but I don't have a better one. Perhaps a 20min binning or offering teams an alternative the player who committed the act must go but you have to sub them AND sacrifice 1 other substitute option. It would cause a hindrance to the offending team to not have an extra option to bring on the field but am just throwing out random ideas not sure if that would ever work tbh

    Another solid performance by Ireland who look unstoppable at the minute, though to be fair England gave a good account of themselves despite yet another poor campaign. The red card is unfortunate but one hundred percent the right call any day of the week. They were very clearly the better team for the entire game but the scary thing is they don't even need to be. Ireland are so ahead of the ball on game fitness that they know come fifty five minutes or so they'll still only just be warming up while much less fit teams like England are knackered. At that point they can just score tries for fun. They did the exact same thing to France, which is even more worrying from an England point of view when you realise that France then did the exact same thing against England last week. Are you really going to argue that a team that hasn't had a positive 6N's record in four years and just shifted their biggest ever home lose is any concern to a team that have had a vice grip on the no.1 spot for almost a year now? 🤣

    @@Camcolito Bad is a strong word, I agree far from the heights that they can reach and that we've seen against the other teams in the championship but even so being able to play that far from your best and still beat a top 10 world side I think is very solid. Not to mention this is without Ringrose, Beirne, Henderson, Bealham, Kelleher, Keenan (for the second half) etc. Furlong is only just coming back after an extended time out as is Henshaw, Baird is still very green at this level and who knows whether Doris and Sheehan are 100% after the knocks they got against Scotland. These results if anything are good. Ireland for years has been plagued by a fantastic first XV or XXIII that can beat anyone but are only a few injuries to key players or a bad day at the office away from crumbling. Happened in 2019 and 2015 just to name two times. Now we're seeing an Ireland team who probably have the best depth of any team on the planet are are still comfortably beating top teams even while only performing at 50%.

    Steward's red card was a clear case of accidental collision whilst bracing for impact. The referee states 'no mitigation' and issued his red card. Sorry Mr Rugby Union, but I disagree and consider this is a clear case for an ORANGE card. Steward had the right to defend himself by bracing against likely injury. The referee's decision was probably made 100% in accordance with the Rugby Union Laws however in this case the Law is an Ass! This unjust situation prejudiced the outcome of the entire game, and possibly the competition. Compare this red card with that of the outrageous Haouas Red Card in the Scotland vs France game where Haouas deliberately head butted the Scottish scrum half and deserves to be banned for rugby for life! Accidental collisions are inevitable and many intermediate cases occur where the referee is bound to choose between issuing a yellow card and a red card. The difference of the impact of these decisions on the entire match is often far to much. Mr Rugby Union - it's time to get your act together before the World Cup and sort out this mess! Terrible red card decision, spoiled the match. I am sure Ireland would probably have won anyway, but it was completely unnecessary red card. It's well and good looking at a super slow motion replay, but you lose full context of the collision. and The lack of time to react in real time. There was all sorts of confusion just before it, players losing the ball, regaining it, no one was sure what was going on, who was attacking or defending, who was going to pick the ball up, he had no chance to react and was just an accidental collision. Simple as that

    It was a forward pass also, so technically, Ireland no longer had possession, it was an open ball to contest. So much uncertainty in it. Clearly no intention behind it, yet they have to have some sacrificial victim, because a player got hurt from it. If it is an open contest for the ball, you are expected to not put yourself in harms way also. In real time there is no malice, intention or anything, but in the super slo motion you can easily read anything into it.

    What you are saying is counter to basic logic, go and look at any, and I mean any rugby training in the last 15 years and you will find something called the tower of power, it might be labelled something else based on the country you are from but its the stance they teach players from minis all the way up to adults. That stance is instinctive in all decent to very good rugby players, it is used to protect yourself in contact. It was simply a rugby accident and didn't even merit a penalty, regardless of who you support or which laws you follow. The ball wasn't in either teams possession as it was thrown forward, so its not as if Stewart targetted the fullback with a shot, if anything he was pulling out of what would have been a tackle, where in all likelihood his shoulder would have hit the full back in the face. Some people are saying the Irish full back should bear responsibility but thats not true either, from minis to adults, you are taught to dive on the loose ball to recover it. Neither training technique is going to be removed, ever, so the responsibility sits with World Rugby and referee education. the only way they'll learn is by falls in coverage.

    What shows to me Steward's guilt was his falling down after contact. How could Keenan head butting his elbow knock him over like that? He just tumbled to the ground. Sometimes, players involved in a deliberate foul try to act innocent and injured. Why didn't he try to tackle Keenan and play it safe? He's by far the bigger man. But he jumped up with an elbow tucked into Keenan's head knowing that play is outlawed. Trying to play it down as a rugby incident is trying to rewrite the rules.

  • @cazzac4817

    Because he wasn't prepared for contact, if you look at the still shots steward is leaning back trying to protect himself from a kick that didn't occur. The idea that this was some malicious scheme concocted in less than a second is absurd.

    @@cazzac4817 well he was running at him and knew contact was likely so to charge in and jump up leading with an elbow to the head is absurd in rugby. It's against the rules and there is the "duty of care". Also, where's the empathy for Keenan? It's all poor Freddie. Okay let's go with there was no malice. I can go with that, but you don't go into contact/challenge with a player, twisting your torso so that youre leading with your forearm at speed. You just don't do it. So just because he didn't mean it he can get away with giving Keenan, who is arguably the player of the tournament, concussion(?) and eliminating him from the rest of the game? That's absurd. Cynical gameplay is all too obvious in English rugby ever since Jones took over and it's still there. Remember the cynical foul play tactics in the English scrum last year? 100s of ex rugby players are suing RFU and others for concussion etc in later life and that is why they're getting rid of head contact in the game. If you don't like it, maybe you shouldn't be playing the game.

  • @cazzac4817

    @cazzac4817

    @@eamonnmcloughlin129 I disagree with the assessment " he charged in with an elbow" and yes the duty of care point is valid(that's to say ideally he should of tried to safely hold keenan or make a more successful attempt of getting out the way) but to colour steward as a malicious thug trying to illegally contact keenan is just wrong. Watching the slow mo, the stills and the full speed replay, you can see that steward runs in to the area of play from the back field he then slows and as contact is imminent with a falling player, tries to pull back and jump away, this evidenced by a his planted back foot, backwards leaning posture and an upward jump which is only upward due to his forward momentum if he was jumping forward he would've propelled himself much further. As for his side ways posture he has two justifications for this;first there was an outside man producing a 2 vs 1 scenario whereby steward could've been trying to play both secondly keenan attempted or feigned a kick which may have prompted steward to try and shield himself from The ball. I can't take seriously that you belive this incident is part of a campaign on behalf of English rugby to cheat and use foul play and that steward was considering this in situ. The red card is another broader question(relating to brain injuries and how best to prevent them) but painting steward as a malicious actor is an unjustified reach that slanders the integrity of a player and the game. Perhaps we need more stringent regulations on legal ways to carry the ball/pick up the ball to prevent players diving head first without any way to control themselves into lines of large heavy men.

  • @eamonnmcloughlin129

    @eamonnmcloughlin129

    Okay you disagree with my assessment that he charged in with an elbow. His elbow hit Keenans head. He was running at speed = he charged in with an elbow. So you're saying it's legit to have your elbow tucked into the side, twist your torso so you lead with the elbow and jump into a tackle where you hit the opposing player head first? Okayyyy He was running way too fast to begin with in an effort to spoil Irelands game and that is reckless and cynical. He "accidentally" puts himself into harmful contact with another player as if he's entitled to. He's not. So he can't wave his arms all innocent and say I couldn't help it. He could have helped his speed. You can't have 6'5" 110kg players charging around at full tilt without duty of care to the opposition and put it down to a rugby incident when they knock their heads off.

If keenan was up right he would've ran around a side ways steward or ran through a backward leaning stewardThis is full speed sport you can't expect steward to slowly jog to the area of play. The standards your setting out are ridiculous. Steward has no idea what precisely is going to occur prior to reaching the active area of play.
