So sorry you struggled with this one. I've definitely made the mistake of picking the wrong fabric for a project (many times). For this dress, if you try again, I would highly recommend one of these fabrics: a light/medium weight raw silk (an absolute DREAM to work with and so, so beautiful with the delicate sheen and amazing colors available), or a silk/cotton blend twill, or a linen/rayon blend for a slightly airier, dressed-down version. All three of these fabrics (although they do fray, so you'd still have to do the seams) are just gorgeous and pretty easy to work with. As for me, I am working on a lightweight denim maxi skirt in an a-line shape, with four gores, no waistband, and slits up to the lower thigh. This is something I really need in my wardrobe to go with a bunch of tops I have that wouldn't match anything else but denim.

You did a great job, Carly!! I'm trying the Minjukim Asymmetric Ruffled Taffeta Midi Skirt. My first attempt at making my own pattern, so I'm doing it with leftover fabric someone gave me (I also don't have enough for the volume I want). I already know what I would do differently the next time, which I think I will - and that's great; it's called learning, I think 😅. I also think you'd love some of her designs! 💕

This looks like every fancy dress I tried to draw in primary school, swoosh, gathers, bows, the styling, magic! 💖 My current projects are all mends/finishings of ones from the naughty corner. I have been playing with hand piecing scraps for mug rugs in between though! 💛

I love that you just went for it. Sometimes we all get into our heads too much. Just going through the process makes all the magic happen !! Thanks for sharing with us your process ! As for my projects ... I'm doing a few mending jobs for my husband (praying my machine recovers from trying to put in a new zipper to a buffalo leather jacket for hubby!) And preparing to sew some Christmas dresses and holiday gifts for family !!! Xoxo

I recently bought a gorgeous red 100%cotton fabric for 20SEK (2$ish)/meter (bought the whole roll of 10m lol) at the thrift store. I didn't knowwhat to make with it, but this would be such a fun dress to make with the frabric! edit: fun fact the french seam is called english seam in french

this was such a cool project! the fabric may not have been ideal but the color really is just so so dreamy✨ your (very understandable and real) frustration was SO. REAL. Great content Carly! You inspire me to start sewing again. You also have a positive and endearing personality that I adore. Beautiful dress. I especially loved the detail of the front of the skirt. And the way those sleeves drape and move are stunning. I can't wait to see it cotton. ❤

Hi Carly! I loved the silhouette of the dress, the front part is gorgeous, and the color suits you perfectly. Good job figuring out the puzzle! In my opinion, the back is a bit messy with all the bows and covers the drop back, which I think is a pity because it looks very nice. I think this dress would look beautiful in Piqué Waffle fabric (I'm not sure if this is the correct name in English), it's normally a fabric to make baby stuff. It's cotton and it has structure, I think it would give and amazing volume to the sleeves and the skirt. I think I might give it a try and make a dress similar to this one, with piqué fabric, I just LOVE the front panel detail and need to give it a try hehe. Thanks for the inspo! Currently, on my sewing table, I have the Paola Workwear Jacket, patching up different colored canvas, for a Christmas present (I wish it was for me TT TT) Happy Tuesday!

You mean gauze/double gauze. Piqué or wafle is normally a knit fabric. And I would not recomment it. Gauze is soft and drapey

I like the back ❤. From front it looks a lot like a historien Costume. I would suggest a stiffer fabric. A poplin or taffeta that would give the gathered parts more structure. And I think the origin dress is lined. With a lining the insert of backstrap would be nicer - you can sandwich it between self and lining. And Most of the fiddly bias binding arent needed 😊 And the hole dress would be more structured

i tried making this a few years ago using jacquard fabric for a wedding party i was attendibg. it ended up being quite heavy. the silhouette is what i wanted but the fabric made it super heavy. i wish i have time to remake it in a lighter fabric for summer!

My current project is a pink eyelet top. This biggest challenge is I am a size 16-18 and have about 1.2 m of the fabric. I'm using Tilly's indigo bodice for this and just adding a ruffle short sleeve and a ruffle peplum. The cutting layout was like tetris or a puzzle but it fit and I have a square of 20x15 cm for the facing left 😂😂

ooooh heheh curl content!! I use Clever Curl Gel, brush the product through & finger coil my curls (if I can be bothered) and then scrunch in John Frieda Frizz Ease Dream curl mousse... then diffuse! Curl Care 5-1 leave in spray on other days to try and tame the mane and I just use a curling iron to get all the stray frizzies hehehe

Funny story, I just heard of House of CB yesterday, looked it up, and I love the aesthetic. Then I found you after looking up how to gather a skirt and then I found this. I thought CB must stand for this designer you are speaking of! Turns out no, House of CB is for Celeb Botique. Oh well. I like this dress you are recreating and I will look more into this designer also!

Love the outcome despite the obstacles you faced and the fabric being difficult! It's still such a beautiful color and I love the texture of it! I'm not sure what project I'm working on next but this inspired me to try something challenging too!! :) I just finished copying a blouse (i usually do dresses) and I have NO idea how I sewed the sleeves inside out but I'm gonna release the video nonetheless HAHAH. Sewing isn't always pretty haha

So sorry you had such trouble with the dress but it came out absolutely beautiful in the end! Currently, I am working on making samples for an Etsy shop I just opened. (I make children's princess dresses and character costumes). It's difficult to choose the costume I want to make but on the side I'm working on three Cinderella gowns for 2 five-year-olds and a two-year-old. Wish me luck 😬

The dress is lovely 🥰. You need a large(I mean LARGE) table to work on the pattern and cutting and so on. I wish I could build you one.

This dress is soo pretty, i love it! I am currently working on s victorian inspired dressing gown following the Closet Historian. Was going great until i realised hald the fabric was upside down 😢 BUT you've inspired me and tomorrow im holding a crafternoon at work ro create a bunch of scrunchies other thibgs for WA Pride! The most wholesome event in govt dept ever 😂

So gorgeous! Although 100% know the feels when it comes to not loving elements of construction that only you can notice. Do you have a good reference or tutorial that helped with the curved front panels? I'm trying to recreate a Gorman-style dress with a front curve and am on struggle street 😅

Mainly from opp shops! Sometimes from Spotlight, Lincraft and The Fabric Store though!
