    I think it's really just a frame of reference thing. I'm coming from 15+ years of WoW so the more traditional anime approach of adding ears and tails to humanoids stands out compared to say a Worgen which doesn't really look like a person. It's the degree of sexualization. The furry races in WoW look more animalistic so they don't tend to trigger that same reaction in most folks as walking into a capital city in FF14 the first time and seeing the crowd of barely clothed female characters that are just humans but with animal ears posing around the aetheryte. Hits different for most folks because they see that and realize yes, that is intended to be appealing. Whereas tauren women in any outfit are clearly only going to appeal to a specific niche.

    When to not use suggested gear.... There are really only 2 situations. 1. You're a high end raider and you're following someone's optimized stat priority for the current BiS gear. This is super not important if you aren't doing Savage and Ultimate fights, but you can raise your DPS a bit if you follow a spreadsheet that's telling you the iLevel 510 stuff with the Crit is better than the 515 stuff with the Direct Hit for your DPS because DPS calcs. Not relevant when not full caught up to the gear treadmill in endgame. 2. Tanks below level 50 can sometimes be suggested "Disciple of War" (which includes tanks and all physical DPS) gear that's meant more for Dragoons than it is for you. They avoid this later on by putting more careful class requirements on almost all gear from 2.1 onward (specifically referring to Tank gear as "fending" and Dragoon as "maiming", Monk/Samurai as "striking" etc...). Make sure your armor prioritizes actual defense over iLevel as a tank below 50, or you might be giving your healer a hard time.

  • @Volkai

    Other times to not use suggested gear: There are several level 1 or 10 XP+% items that you want to keep equipped until they no longer grant their bonus XP instead of the recommended gear - the Friendship Circlet in particular (obtained through the new player recruitment system) is a serial offender of this.

    When it comes to stats, it's actually fairly simple - all classes have a main attribute like Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence or Mind that increases the potency of their skills. Strength for melee (except Ninja, which uses Dexterity); Dexterity for physical ranged classes; Intelligence for casters and Mind for healers. Tenacity and Piety are tank and healer specific stats respectively - you can ignore them as other roles, and if you see them on a piece of gear you can instantly identify what it's for. Critical hit is exactly what you imagine; Direct hit is kinda like Critical hit, but it's a linear damage increase rather than quadratic. Determination works like the main attribute of your class, but at basically half efficiency - it's basically a versatile dump stat since it works on all jobs no matter their role. Skill/Spell speed are interesting, as they directly shorten the cooldowns of your skills/spells and autoattacks. Certain classes don't have too much use for it like Ninja, as that job has other ways of decreasing its cooldowns. And that's pretty much it! There's also Gathering/Perception and Craftmanship/Control but those are purely for gathering and crafting classes respectively (yes professions in FFXIV are a class in itself, with their own stats, gear, skills, rotations and questlines)

But not many players gear for it since Critical hit and Direct hit give better returns on damage... and everyone gear for damage in FFXIV. I only really use Tenacity while leveling since it helps alot if you are below the max levels for the dungeon(Once you are at max or downsynced it gets worthless). But that's pretty much only possible if you bother with materia in the first place, since you gain more from just upgrading ilvl.

    So I'm likely late to the party, but here are some useful things I can quickly think of: - Underneath your main scenario quest ribbon (yellow banner, red meteor icon with two footsteps in it), you'll find notable quests. These include: class quests, job quests, chocobo mount unlock - Once you have your chocobo mount around the level 20 MSQ mark, progress to level 30 on any combat job and you can unlock combat mode for your chocobo! This means you can call it out in the overworld and have it fight with you! - Once you've unlocked your chocobo's combat mode, you can unlock chocobo saddlebags, which gives you extra inventory space! Note that you can only access this inventory space outside of any duty. Welcome to Eorzea!

  • @Knightveil
    @Knightveil2 жыл бұрын

    Some things: 1. Yes, the MSQ got buffed and streamlined a bit. That's the main reason you're outleveling the content. You'll notice that each quest has a level attached to it, which is the level you were expected to be when you took it. It isn't uncommon to overlevel the MSQ by around five levels, maybe more. If you created your character on a Preferred server, you'll have the Road to 70 buff (an icon at the top of your screen will call this out) which buffs your XP gain even more. 2. Yes, in general use the suggested gear, except as others have noted. The important thing to remember is that the preferred gear system pulls exclusively from your armory chest (ctrl-I) rather than your main inventory. You can set things up so that newly acquired gear goes in to your main inventory instead of the armory chest, but if you do, be aware of how the preferred gear system works. 3. Yes, teleport around with the aetherytes. But be aware that in Endwalker (6.0) the fast travel system is being changed so that the cost of the teleport will be based on your distance from the place you're going to. It probably won't affect lower level players who are hopping from, say, Gridania to Fallgourd Float, but when you get in to the later expansions the cost may well be prohibitive as it costs 999 gil to hop from Gridania (or anywhere on Eorzea) to Kugane, the big main city in Stormblood. The cost can be mitigated a bit by some Free Company buffs (Free Companies are like Guilds in WoW), but it's still a good chunk of gil. 4. The Glamour system isn't as robust as WoW's Transmog system, but it works within the limits of the game. It has similar limitations (certain gear can only be worn by certain classes/jobs) but the sheer number of good looking pieces makes up for that for the most part. 5. Once you've unlocked the first two dungeons, you'll also unlock the Roulette system. Think of it like WoWs Looking for Dungeon feature with one big caveat: when you're running roulettes it's probable that you'll get grouped with higher-level players. This is by design to ensure that lower-level players can complete their dungeons and nobody has to wait inordinate amounts of time to get a dungeon run randomly. The higher-level players get an XP boost based on the difference between their actual level and the level of the dungeon they're in, so roulettes can be a great way to level alt jobs or just to fill in that little bit of XP you might need for the next level and the next Job Quest. 6. One last thing, and you may already have figured this out. In combat, when you see the orange telegraph, you run out of it, but once that telegraph disappears you can run right back to where you were, the animation won't hurt you as long as you weren't in the telegraph when it disappeared. This is really helpful for tanks and melee DPS because you don't end up moving the boss/target and the meless won't lose as much DPS because they run right back in and maybe get back in their positional area. 7. Okay, I lied. Last one. Play FFXIV like it's a single player game with occasional multi-player content, because that's how it's designed. You are the hero and the people you're working with (or willbe working with) both know that and *know your name*. FFXIV is really a single-player JRPG with MMO trappings and that's part of what makes it work so well.

    I migrated from wow to ff14 over the summer and there are two points that really increased my satisfaction with the game as I played though it. 1st ARR is their version of Burning Crusade, I really enjoyed ARR and was quite content with it. I was disarmed by how much the game was able to improve over the course it's expansions, how good the jobs feel and play, how good the story, environment and systems all feel. 2nd and this may just be me, but wow had ingrained in me a min maxing scarcity mindset. This does not really exist here. In this game if you don't optimize something, it does not matter that much. Capping on a currency does not matter much because they shower you with it. Picking the wrong piece as a reward is okay because there is a vendor that sells the other. The game is much more generous, less punishing of it's learning curve and has more respect for your time than any other I have played in this genere.

  • @Willias

    @Willias

    I don't think ARR really compares to the Burning Crusade at all. ARR was a complete rebuild of the game after the original FF14 completely and utterly failed. The reason the game improves so much is because A Realm Reborn was a complete recreation of FF14, and was done over only 2 years. Heavensward is where the FF14 team really attempts to do their own thing, as ARR was mostly meant as a Final Fantasy flavored WoW-clone.

He claims that the team has been diligent at removing technical debt whenever they run into it. Spending the time to rewrite problematic parts of the code whenever they find something that is holding them back. On the client side, they replaced the entire engine (1.x was using Crystal Tools, 2.x and onward are using a heavily modified version of Luminous), and from what Yoshida has said, there isn't much code left from 1.x on the server side, either. He also talked about the reason for the delay when they made the announcement, and he took all of the blame himself. He said that it was his own perfectionism, and that he requested too many last minute changes because he wanted it to be perfect, but that didn't leave them enough time to the QA team to finish their work. That isn't to say that they haven't made design decisions that they regret, or that have held the game back. Years ago Yoshida called out the ACN → SMN/SCH split as one of their biggest mistakes, and it has definitely caused them a number of headaches over the years. He also recently mentioned that he regrets the design of the glamour dresser system, and it seems that a WoW or GW2 style transmog and wardrobe system was on the table at one point, and he regrets that they made the choice not to go down that road.

    I've heard people say they somehow completely missed the novice hall, so for anyone reading who might have: if you're at the first dungeon (or after it), then it should be available to you! You can go to any of the starting inns, and look for the guy with the big sprout icon over his head: you can start the quests from him. Each role you do the quest on will reward you with a set of starter gear (for your role, ie melee dps, caster, tank, etc), which will usually last you into the early/mid 20s, and the final step will reward a ring that gives +30% xp any time you're below lvl 30, and works on all combat classes. You should do it at least once to get that ring, and if you're not familiar with how your role works in dungeons (like first time playing healer or tank, for instance) it's worth giving them a go with one of those classes. If you already know how to play your role in a dungeon you don't need to repeat them unless you want the gear set (though you might already have it from another class you did it on), but that first clear for the ring is super important.

WoW generally has more vibrant colors so if you really enjoy that kind of thing you might prefer WoW's style more. Personally I like them both for different reasons, and I think WoW's style can be really good at times, but overall FFXIV wins by a landslide for me. It's mostly because of character/glamour design and set piece design (as in the theatrical definition of "set piece"). It's hard to imagine WoW being able to beat the Churning Mists at night or the Ocular, for example, and those aren't exceptions they're the norm. Like, I'll never forget looking back at Limsa Lominsa from the newbie zone at night during a firework festival and that's one of the first things I experienced in the game. Granted I haven't played WoW in a really long time so I'm just going by what I've seen in videos and screenshots recently.

    I think the issue most players have is the distinction between art style and graphics, they are different. Artstyle is unique and both have their artstyle which is subjective Graphics is purely engine and hardware related on texture and such (which can be further improved with tools such as Gshade ).

    Some miscellaneous tips: - if you don't like going through the separate tabs in your inventory: Go to Character Configuration -> Item Settings(2nd button on left) -> set Inventory Interface to "Open All"/"Expanded" - all mounts play music and many have their own music. But if you don't wanna listen to it: Go to System Configuration -> Sound Settings -> turn off "Play Music While Mounted. - it's fine to say you're new in a dungeon and if you want tips, it's alright to ask. - if you're really strapped for Gil, you can use Chocobo Porters instead. They work like Flight Masters in WoW, but Porters take way less time. Just talk to them to unlock riding to and from that Porter.

TBH, some people still playing WoW made snide comments, so I dunno if that was part of it or what. I did notice some of her mods didn't seem too happy about it, either... even if they weren't overt about it.

    Hello! Just found your channel today! Thanks for the suggestion KZread! I love hearing people's first time journey through FFXIV. Now for some tips you may or may not know by now: 1. You can turn off cutscenes that start at the beginning of every dungeon in your settings. You can also turn off chat noises every time someone messages you or that annoying bar that pops up every time you get a friend request (especially during cutscenes), etc. Really go through your character/system settings. You won't regret it. 2. You can bring up the chat window during cutscenes and hide it again by right clicking one of the chat tabs. Pressing enter when you leave the cutscene will bring it up again. 3. If/When you find yourself blocked from entering a new dungeon because your gear ilvl isn't good enough, check your accessories first! This is often the most overlooked gear piece for many and as a result they usually end up being your lowest ilvl pieces. Replace these with higher ilvl pieces and watch your ilvl soar! 🤩 ....By a couple points at the very least. 😂 4. Not really a tip, but glamour is considered true endgame in FFXIV. 😉 These are just a few of the tips I wish I knew when I first started playing. And I know you've been playing for a while now, but regardless, welcome to FFXIV! 😄 Edit: I realize you've more than likely already seen these tips as I'm watching your videos from oldest to newest so my apologies. 😅

Then I remembered I had decided to check back on this channel later, my exact thought was "I'll check back in in a few months when this becomes a dedicated FF14 channel"... and well here we are.

    One other thing about gearing - it is *extremely* straightforward from level 50-79 (at the current time, that straightforwardness will extend to level 89 when EW comes out). Once you get to level 50, there is something called Tomestones of Poetics that you can earn from doing duty roulettes + other stuff. Tomestones of Poetics can be used to buy near BIS gear for level 50/60/70 (and 80 when EW comes out), if you reach the town that sells them (Revenant's Toll in 50, Idyllshire in 60, Rhalgr's Reach in 70 (only after you beat the Stormblood base campaign), and Eulmore will allow Poetics buying when EW comes out for 80 (towards the end of Shadowbringers base campaign)). You can literally survive on that gear from level 50 all the way to just below max level.

    Just be warned though, your power will wane towards the end of an expansion's level range doing this. Tanks get somewhat squishy at level 68, for example, if you're still wearing level 60 poetics gear.

    When you are in a big city like Limsa/ Gridania/ Uldah, attune yourself to all the little aetheryte crystals found all over the cities and then use those (and the big aetheryte) to travel everywhere in the city from then on. It will save you a lot of headaches trying to get around a big city. You can set up to 3 preferred main Aetherytes for cheaper fast travel besides the one that you set as your home. The map is confusing at first but you will get used to it.

Once you get both to about 80 it’ll enhance your melee combo where you charge to the target and stab them in the face, then you do 3 additional stab in the face melee attacks , followed by a final back flip attack where you keep backwards and shoot shit at the target. In higher levels, after the backflip you get enhanced spells that add into this combo.

If you find arr fine, you'll do just fine with the expansions too. :) Relating to fashion, arr has some... interesting pieces. You'll churn through gear pretty fast early on so don't worry too much about your outfit until higher levels. We all have to wear a dunce cap and short shorts at some point as casters. XD As a tip: there is an option to send new armor pick ups to your inventory rather than you armour chest. This will save you a headache tracking down unwanted gear randomly dropping in dungeons.

    I think a big thing for WoW players to know is fitting 1-2 oGCDs in-between your GCD, instead of using an oGCD after the GCD timer is up. A general rule of thumb is actions listed as "Weaponskill/Spell" are on the GCD and "Abilities" are oGCD. I think only BRD and SAM break this rule.

    Tip: You can keep trying to add more materia than what slots you have if you've learned to meld items yourself. Right click on any equipped piece and select "Meld", you'll notice items that already have materia in them will be available on your list... they will disappear from that list if you can no longer add more materia to that item. Also, sometimes you'll notice some materia won't give you extra stats, look at the bottom of the screen when you have an item highlighted and it will show you the maximum amount you can have of any stat. This only applies to melding items yourself, though, which means you need a crafting job at or above the level required to wear that gear. I've got weaving up to lvl 58 but my main job is lvl 70, so I can't meld anything on her right now :( Melding in this way also means that new gear might not be suggested to you, I think because the materia that has been added still outweighs a new item until you meld that piece.

    One thing that is very easy to miss and helps a lot in the early game. Hall of the novice training. At the tavern in every major city is someone with a green leaf icon over their head. Those npc’s offer a series of short introductory quests that teach you the basics of your role, (in this case, dps) most of those missions will reward you with gear that should still be effective for you until you get close to lvl 30. At the end of the series, you get the brand new ring. It has better stats than any other ring you’ll get in the early game and gives you a 10%xp buff up to lvl 30. Highly recommended that you pick it up.

    Couldn't agree more about the music, and also about how there's just so much to do that feels engaging and welcoming for solo or casual players. Not only does this game just flat-out respect your time, but never has a game soundtrack immersed me so wholly. There are a LOT of things to love about FFXIV, but those are a few of the top items for sure.

    RE: bards, we actually have a wide variety of instruments on tap, and I have even been to a few concerts where a band of bards played guitars, harps, flutes, horns and drums. They were playing 90's alternative rock, so there's a lot you can do there. I stop to clap whenever I see a bard performing.

    There are certain situations in which *every* class should use the limit break, honestly For tanks, there are specific raid bosses where, if a tank does not pop their LB3 right before the big attack, it's a guaranteed party wipe no matter what else you do For healers, you _never_ want to use an LB 1 or 2, but high-level raids typically reserve their LB3 for healers so that half-wipes can just be insta-rezzed and get back to boss mulching For melee dps, they're the ones to normally pop LB, since they just get high single-target burst damage and that's obviously super useful against bosses But there's also something to be said for letting ranged/magic dps pop LB instead, to insta-clear massive pulls of trash right before the boss, which can seriously up your time-to-completion on the dungeon. This is best done in lower tier content, where you can get an LB and then just have the tank do a wall-to-wall pull through the whole dungeon, pop invincibility, and then have the summoner Terraflare the entire dungeon population into aether mist while the healer and other dps play triple triad in the back of the room

    To prevent potential whiplash: Summoner (the job that will become available for the Arcanist class) will be getting a rework in the newest expansion coming out in about 2 weeks. Nothing to worry about, just that if you see buttons on your hot bar change in two weeks, that would be why.

    Hey Garrett, glad you're enjoying the game. I'm a long time player of FF14. Started with 11 as my first MMO and never played one of the JRPG before it. Played WoW since pre-cata. I've wanted to do a sit down talk Q&A with a newbie. Let me know if there's any interest.

    You keep using that word, but I don't think you know what it means. I have a friend who is a true weeb. He had his hair similar to the Japanese. He learned Japanese. He moved to Japan. He ended up marrying a Japanese girl. So, saying that this game is weeb is strange because it's produced by a Japanese company. You might want to brush up on your vocabulary.
