Record Shopping in Soho's Famous Berwick Street (Sister Ray Records, London)
Ойын-сауық
At London's heart sits a famous record hunting street. Its name is Berwick Street. It adorns Oasis' famous album "(What's The Story) Morning Glory?" where two men are pictured walking toward each other along the street on the cover. Sister Ray is among one of the key shops there, so we went to take a look at what it has to offer.

Berwick Street used to have interesting shops but there aren't any bargains to be had anymore. Without that excitement I don't bother anymore. Not just Berwick Street of course, it's the same everywhere...
Outrageous prices in Sister Ray, I prefer Reckless over the road. Last time I was in Sister Ray there were several American tourists digging: that's who they're pricing for. Best avoid central London I say, and go to Alan's in N Finchley, or the excellent Record Store in Amersham. Or Empire Records in St Albans. Much more sensible prices, and IMHO more accurate grading...

Great shop Alan's, got some really good stuff in there over the years, as well as The Record Shop Amersham 👍
Been in once, about 5 years ago. Didn't stay long. Saw the prices and walked out again!

Big issue is rents in Soho. Their overheads will be insane. Push out loads of interesting independent shops out of the area.

Berwick St and the streets surrounding it in the 90s/early 2000's was amazing. Literally dozens of amazing shops all offering something unique. Yes rents got out of control and thats why all the best record shops here in London are now well out of the centre of town.
Great to see you guys back doing what you do best

Dave doesn't look too impressed by the shop - 'too expensive and I've got 'em all' I hear you Dave! Recently discovered your channel and I am totally anamoured. I've even got hold of a couple of Prog LPs (even though I'm much more of a funk/jazz/soul kind of a guy over my 30 years of vinyl buying).

A bit expensive in this shop but I've bought a few things such as a live Metalica double album for £35. i love to watch you two sorting through records just so nice. I imagine i'm with you. Love it.
Nice to see you guys spending some time in the Paul Weller section. I have that live promo you were checking out. It was made to look like a Japanese bootleg, but it is official. The credits are printed inside the sleeve pocket.
I totally agree that the shop is extremely expensive but about a month ago I bought a US 1st press Funkadelic - Maggot Brain that was unplayed , and the fragile unipac cover was near mint . I paid £150 for it which I thought was reasonable , as a lot of vg copies go for around £400 . I'm not sure they appreciated the rarity of finding this in mint condition .
Reckless in the late 80s was unreal. You woukdnt believe what you coukd puck up in there, like night and day compared with today
Good Job man!

I bought Mad Season re issue a couple of weeks ago, great album
The most expensive record I bought was in Sister Ray. It was a 12" single I had wanted since 1993. I found the record in the shelf, then went to a pub nearby to consider my options. After a couple of pints in Chinatown I decided I'd take the plunge and stomped with intent, back to Sister Ray to make my purchase. With money spent and record in hand, I left the shop and headed on my way. During the walk I got a notification on my from a record label to say that they were reissuing the very record I'd just bought... I went straight back to the pub to drown my sorrows.
I miss Mr CD and the great Cheapy Cheap Records, sure that was the name, a haven of cheap vinyl, both once situated on Berwick Street
Hope you went round the corner to Sounds of the universe.. ?
Thought I'd just pop on and request you make a video showing your grandads collection Llike you did with Barry...
Why do they have photocopies of the covers instead of the actual record, is it for security reasons or to keep the sleeves and records protected?

I was in this shop a few weeks ago and I really didn't enjoy the exprience of flicking through photocopies - totally kills the excitement of finding "the one" - I'm really not going to go to the counter and ask to see each item i'm interested in so I just walked out the door - I imagine sales are dropping with this policy
Should come up to Newcastle. There's 4 really decent record shops that have extensive second hand vinyl. If you need a guide ........

I’d recommend Fac1968 in Nottingham. Bargains to be found. Only been open a few months. The owner owned another shop in the 90’s
Alan’s Records and the Little record shop are by far the best record shops in London, I find Sister Ray and Reckless far too expensive and I once tried to get a £100 record in Sister Ray and they still didn’t give me a reduction !

I bought the Andrew Hill LP on the wall this week. All the record shops in Soho have been overpriced for decades, there are better alternatives as you guys know. I still don't get the photocopy sleeve thing they do there, 98% of the time you don't even want the record, you feel like you're wasting everyone's time. I do go in Sister Rays, Reckless and Sounds of The Universe every month or so, just to have a look.
Dear Vinyl Hunters, I have one question for you. You go to so many record stores and film there how you dig for records. I like it very much. But are you allowed to film there? I've filmed before, and it bothered the owner. Now I would like to know, are your favorite record stores generous owners? All the best and best regards
@thevinylhunters

We do ask permission! Our favourite record stores are the ones that stock the kind of music we like for below average price, ones that will always do us a deal, ones that recommend good things and ones that keep stock fresh. Ones that we know if we walk in we could find a bargain and could find a grail.

Can’t fault the reissue stock in there but for OG collectors SR is not great at all, the photocopies of sleeves is the absolute worst and the prices are crazy, I saw some Alternative TV singles for like £400!!
Incredible Records 👍👍
Takes the mick sister ray prices reckless opposite are a bit better value wise found a swirl gentle giant debut for 65 quid

Berwick Street is not what it used to be. The prices are outrageous. I used to visit a lot, in the 99s, then I’d go to Notting Hill and visit Intoxica, Minus Zero and Stand Out and Rough Trade. Those were different times indeed.
The price of records in there are way over the top, is the owner called Dick Turpin?
Soho record shopping is not great. Really only two decent shops left. Phonia for Dance music and Sounds of the Universe good for Soul, Reaggae etc. Is Daddy Cool still in Berwick Street? Sister Ray used to be the place for the industrial and esoteric stuff and Selectadisc the main store on the street seemed to have everything! High rents and web trading killed it off.
Do not dare call Comus - First Utterance weird... But its psychedelic folk, one of the bands with 30-40+ break

It takes practice and it definitely helps that we are a duo and not a single person alone but just practice! Other people in public don't care anywhere near as much as your anxiety feels that they do, so just go for it! People in public will forget about you after a few minutes and you should forget about them too! :)
