Record Imp Vice - Restoration
In this video I’m restoring a very rusty and seized Record Imp table vice. I really like the look of the vice, its scale and mounting arrangement belie it’s usefulness. I can see it featuring in many more restoration videos in the future.
The rusty screws gave quite a fight and took some time finding replacements, in the end I’m really happy the way it turned out and I feel I’m continuing to learn the filming process.

I am a huge my mechanics fan and I think he would absolutely approve of you doing what you need to get the job done. I have watched him many times having to create his own gadgets and tools to accomplish something. Great job on the vice. Glad to have another restorer to add to my list to watch.
This channel is now one of three that gets an instant like outta the thousands of channels I’m subscribed to. The attention to detail is almost unsurpassed, fit & finish is near perfection, & really the only thing anyone could ask for is more videos, which I have no doubt will be coming soon. Just can’t say enough good things about this channel.

That Vise looks GREAT = Love everything about it - color / how U blued it - all come 2gether Great👍👍
That turned out great!
awesome well done, your paint finish is superb
Little hint. When you need to remove a screw that is stuck with heat, do NOT heat the screw. Heat the material around the screw. The metal will expand making the extraction of the screw much easier.

@@user-zv4pi8bc4v True, but that's not what happen. In most cases you cannot heat a screw than rapidly cool it as it sits an a larger object like seen here. Yes physics should be taught in school.

fantastic work of Resurrection of the dead. thanks.👌
Very nice job 👍 a lot of care taken to make this look magnificent.

Fantastic job, absolutely perfect. WD-40 is a great product but when it comes to really rusted and stubborn bolts or screws I use Plus Gas and I think it's the most effective, it is not easily found as other penetrating fluids but available in most car parts stores.

I'm mainly a woodworker, but I have worked on different kinds of vise before....... I find a manual impacting screwdriver to be worth their weight in gold for ignorant screws, like in your vise jaws. They come with parallel ground tips that get a much better purchase in a slot head to reduce marring, and they remove even the most stubborn of fixings. As a fan of old Record tools I'm happy to see this back up and running; even better than it was when first made....... VERY well done Sir 😁

Superb job mate 👍 I have my Grampa's wee Record Imp vice that I'm gauna restore soon, Its in good order I do use it and as you will know that although it's a small vice it can take a right good beating, My grampa used his all his days from when he was an apprentice until he died then my uncle used it for years and he gave it to me for my shed when I built it and I have used it for many years, I'm just gauna "freshen" it up as I want to keep the character there I.e. hacksaw marks, chisel and hammer strikes etc, will probably just clean and paint and restore the face plates on the jaws, great vice (note to viewers if you see one of these on Ebay or at the bootsale or wherever then snap one up they are little workhorses and you won't be disappointed).

Great restoration, having restored a couple of Record Vices myself, it was interesting watching your method because it is quite different to the approach I take. I quite liked how you used a filling primer before paint because the final result really showed the benefit. Also had no idea that the anvil could be unscrewed from those Vices. Of course now the best part is that you can use it, abuse it and destroy your work ready for the next person with an appreciation for vintage vices and desire to restore something.

I've watched several vice restoration videos, and there's something that puzzles me -- considering the trouble that restorers usually have to dismantle the various nuts & bolts, especially those on the jaws, why don't they ever seem to grease the threads when they're reassembling?
Turned out looking good, mate.👌🏻 I'm just a bit concerned about the rust left in the threads 1# 24:38 2# 25:20 ...
Mig welders weld tin, mild steel, and with special wire and gas stainless and aluminum. They do not well cast iron..period. The weld always breaks off. Nice looking little vise did you look up to see what attachment goes in the hole?
What is the tool you have there that applies the white paint? Very well done!
I figured you would cut the ball ends off the original handle and weld them to a new handle.
Very nice job! My only critique would be the heavy grease you used may not be the best as any filings or dirt will adhere to it. I would have used a spray silicon or a product like Boeshields T-9

@TheGardenWorkshopRestoration

Table vices are normally aimed at cheapness - the Record Imp (essentially a very scaled down Record Auto Vice #74 or #75) is the best one that I know of. The Woden Titan is comparable in build quality, but not as versatile. Useful discussion here: www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/record-imp-vice.23939/

Sensible person: Lubricate threads. Fully working vice in 3 minutes. KZreadr: Dismantle, destroying parts ,just to show laid out. Spend days removing surface, welding, installing new surface, polishing, to make a vice which is not as useful, but looks "pretty".
@k.hussain360

Why is the Vice not as useful after the restoration?
@DaimlerSleeveValve
@@k.hussain360 The surface, which underwent quality checks at the factory, was removed by sandblasting, then a layer of soft filler was put on to pretend that never happened. Hit that anvil section with a hammer (that's why it is there) and you will raise a load of dust. Parts which were carefully machined for an accurate fit are now loose. Remember that this is not a cheap chinesium item, but a quality vice made in Sheffield.
@k.hussain360
@@DaimlerSleeveValve sandblasting barely removes any actual metal in real terms it's would make a microscopic difference if done correctly, especially if the primary purpose is to remove rust and old flakey paint. Structurally it would make very little to the Vice because as you correctly mentioned they are Sheffield made and tend have thicker castings. As for the machined components such as threads, they wear over time no matter what material is used particularly in the case of vices which tend to have a lot of force applied and they have survived up to this point (70+ years). Having restored 8 different Record Vices, albeit not using the same methods, I have never experienced a problem using any of them after restoration.
@TheGardenWorkshopRestoration

I think DSV is correct to a degree, I could have got the vice operational quite easily and if I wasn’t uploading a video to youtube I may have done that (wouldn’t have been an entertaining video though). Using filler on rough castings is not an uncommon occurrence, it wouldn’t be done on an item such as this due to the labour/cost involved, however if you look at expensive milling machines and lathes the castings were commonly filled in order to give a better paint finish (in the same way cars are). I only did this on the painted surfaces not machined components, threads were protected from sandblasting by electrical tape etc.
