Reconnecting with Nature - Autumn Photography

Secret To Landscape Photography
Welcome to this weeks video where I explore Wales over Autumn and capture some beautiful ancient woodland photos. During this Landscape Photography Vlog I share with you my thoughts on kit as well as some exciting announcements. As some of you know and may have seen from my channel and social media account, I have struggled to find my photography mojo since lockdown. It’s been a slow process but I feel I am finally getting there. I have moved house three times and been working a lot with a change of role. I 100% feel I am through the other side and finally ready to dedicate my time to my passion for photography. It feels so good to step out of the hustle and bustle of life and reconnect with nature and capture its beauty. I am really happy with the images taken in this video, I’d also like to add that this was filmed two weeks ago I just haven’t been able to post it due to finding the time to edit. Here are the settings for each image in case anyone wanted to know;
Image one: 1/5th F8 ISO 200 40mm
Image two: 1/20th F4 ISO 800 70mm
Image three: 1/80th F4 ISO 500 47mm
Image four: 0.6th F8 ISO 100 55mm
Image five & six: 0.6thth F8 ISO 100 45mm

Your video popped up in my feed & I'm glad it did. I agree, photography isn't about kit & money. My favorite go-to is a $30 Minolta X-700 with a 50mm Rokkor lens, which out of all my camera collection is the cheapest setup, & that is so much more enjoyable to shoot than my DSLR or Hasselblad. And thanks for the amazing photos!

Great video. You talked about using a dated camera. Well just like you I can't afford to by the latest cameras I still use a very dated Nikon D200 which to be honest has been a great work horse. Someone once said it's not the camera that takes great photos it is the photographer that takes a great pictures. I will look out for your calendars as I love the photo compositions that you produce I look forward to seeing more exciting videos keep up the great work!

I find your photographic eye very good. I am myself a begginer. Not as aftistic. Learning you are on a budget, I wanted to mention my own discovery of very cheap stuff that defeat very expensive altetnatives. I started with Luminar 3 to avoid the monthly Lightroom fee. Yet I just found that Rawtherapee is as good and in my opinion better. With Luminar I needed Sharpen AI but also Denoise AI. With Rawtherapee I it seems to be useless. Then Gimp is probably just as capable as Photoshop. Their is lots of plug ins also that can be added. Both softwares are open source and free. The capacity of the conming Luminar Neo seems to be so revolutionary that I have ordered it though. Main interest to me is the capacity to adjust colors, exposures and a couple other things based on the algorythmic distance from the focus point. Before we could only treat images globaly affecting all the shadows at once and all the highlights at once, with this we will be able to affect close subjects seperate from farther ones. I see it very promessing for HDR, Focus stacking and also to enhance pictures of high dynamic range. In my opinion Luminar is cheap enough for the outcome. But still Rawtherapee and Gimp might still do most of the necessary by themselves. When I discovered Gimp and Rawtherapee, it felt that Luminar and Photoshop only took portion from them and made them more friendly users and esthetic. Seems that it is just a makup to ve part of that jet set. Sure Adobe softwares keeps improving, yet the same is true with open source softwares. I believe they actually grow better, because they are built be passionate people in their spare time, just like you and me! I don't do lots of modification to my photography in general. I try to make them as authentic as I can. But with Rawthrapee, I have general presets and I doubt that the fine tuning I have to do would be as fast with Lumunar or Lightroom. That is to say that once familiar with these sofwares, they mught actually perform much better. I still use Shatpen AI. It let me have my picture sharpened without my attention focused on each pictures. But the computer takes probably just as much time then I would and probably more, just using Rawtherapee. Since I have the software, I use it, but I feel that Rawtherapee might actually save time on this regard too with some practice. Rawtherapee is also strongly built around Lab, color format, aa opposed to RGB, wich we should all appreciate and it shows the professionalism of the people behind it.

  • @cliffterpher

You're a breath of fresh air! Loads of free software you can use. Raw Therapee / Dark Table / GIMP (layer-based image manipulation) / Kdenlive (video) / Shotwell. I run Linux Mint which has loads of graphical software for free. Investing in time and trips to practice your skills beats upgrading perfectly good camera. Prefer the panorama tbh.

Enjoyed that. Regarding showing what is on the back of the camera, I bought a MyPin HDMI recorder for £90 off Amazon. It allows me to show the settings on the camera in my videos. I don't use it all of the time, because it switches off the Live View and the EVF on the camera, and the picture on the MyPin screen is quite dark (it's not really designed for use out of doors), but it helps illustrate what I'm talking about when I get technical. As for cheap gear, as long as it is delivering the results that you want, then it's the right gear for you. A camera is only a tool. A good photographer can take great pictures with a phone, while a bad photographer will still take bad pictures with a £5k camera.

For a good budget filter system take a look at SRB. Their rotating holder for the polariser is very good and the filters are great value. Hope you keep producing the videos.

Great to see you back! You're spot on about gear photography doesn't start by having the best camera it starts from within the photographer and how they see things then knowing how to record them on camera of course some cameras are better than others we cant get away from that i still use a nikon d800 launched in 2012 and love it with no real desire to change and i shoot models and landscape and can people tell the pictures arent from the latest camera? Of course not😁 oh, and your camera is 21 mp and you can easily print large with that large pixel count doesn't really come into it unless your printing the size of Buckingham Palace. Looking forward to your next one loved the images. Take care!😊

Very true Suzannah about the gear, you don't need to spend loads of money on cameras. For me Composition is more important than quality. My 5d mk3 is getting on a bit now but he's a beast and the only thing that fails is the soft squidgy thing behind it. I really need to get back out and take some photos and record some more videos this video is making me want to get out and shoot!

Nice video. Great that you could get back out into nature. Good point about the older gear, there's nothing wrong with using older stuff if it gets you the images. Almost all my gear is secondhand. That said, if you were to upgrade, I'd look at the 6D Mk1. Cheap to get now, and a great sensor, brilliant in low light, good for video too. But if you are saving for a house, that comes first. The lone trees are good, especially the second one. That last image is great, the widescreen (16:9 ish) type crop works well. Cleans up the top and bottom of the image. Keep it uo.

You have a new subscriber!..Me! Lovely video. Where you were shooting is very similar to one of my regular 'haunts', which is what attracted me to the video in the first place. I love photographing pathways and walkways. Good on you for sharing how 'basic' your gear can be (although the Canon 5D Mkii is a lovely camera). I also use quite an old camera.. the Nikon D90. 13 years old now, so pretty obselete in technological terms, but shoots as good the day it was made. The thing is with 'old' gear is that you can pick up a really good bargain! I paid less than £200 for a camera that was £700 new! Ansel Adams, one of the greatest photographers of his (or any) time, once said words to the effect of "The most important part of any camera is the person stood behind it!"

Good video, nice relaxed approach with honest explanations which goes a long way with viewers. Most off my gear is used and I stalk camera shop wed site used section and photography forums like a cooled cobra for deals ! If you are not doing large prints most cameras are good enough for landscape photography as a dance AF, mega fps, buffer rate, etc are just not important. Always buy the best glass you can afford as I have found this is the area of best return for your cash !

nice laid back chat - right up my street so subbed :-) on the filters front, if on a budget have a look at Kood's 100mm filters. I use a couple of their NDs and they're very good. Don't scrimp on a polariser though - you really do get what you pay for there. I use a Haida - not cheap but very, very good. Oh, and there's nothing wrong with iMovie!! I tried Final Cut Pro but it was too complex for me (but then I am rather old!)

Hi Suzanna, first time viewer and new subscriber here. It's so refreshing to see a KZread photography channel that isn't gear-centric so thank you for that. Your camera is perfectly respectable and 10 years ago you'd have found probably 80% of landscape photos published were taken on a 5D mk2 with a 24-105 f/4 zoom. It was, and still is, a really good landscapers camera. I can't tell you anything about taking photos as you have a great eye. I can tell you that I've spent way more money on photo gear than I needed to over the past 10-12 years that I've been doing it with any degree of seriousness. The things that I have never had any regrets about buying, and there aren't many items that fall into this category, are: a really good solid, tall tripod, a great ball head, a top quality standard range zoom lens and spare batteries. Other stuff is nice to have, but not absolutely essential. The only essential filter these days is a Circular Polariser. After that you may want a some solid ND filters if you're into long exposures or video. After that, the main thing you have to decide is if you want to use graduated NDs or use exposure blending techniques in post-processing to deal with images where the dynamic range exceeds what the camera can deal with. If you want to do it all in camera, then "square" filters that slot into a holder are best option (the typical Lee system). If you decide to use only polariser and solid NDs then you can get many "screw-in" filters (Urth are a new name but their polarisers seem OK to me and are pretty good value). The Kase magnetic system seems to me to be something of a half-way between screw-in and square in terms of functionality but I have no personal experience with it. Personally, I use a Lee system for tripod work and then I use screw-in polarisers for hand held stuff because (a) they don't fall off when you're moving about and (b) I like to use lens hoods. Sorry for this turning into a bit of an epic comment but hopefully my experience might help others avoid spending their hard-earned on unnecessary gear when it would be better spent on getting out there or on courses, workshops and other learning tools. All the best for your photographic future.

Hello :) This is the first time I have seen your videos but just wanted to say something about your gear... As someone who has upgraded my kit about three times since my first 6mp Nikon D50, the kit you use is much less important than ability to create great photos using your composition skills, something which you are already good at if this video is anything to go by! I would say if your current camera is producing good results for you and is reliable, don't waste your money. Your photographs are very nice already. :)

Lovely work, glad to see another outing from you. Do you feel your equipment holds you back? From what I can see, all you can do is look for more resolution and dynamic range, and iMovie seems to present excellent results. Sometimes new equipment is something we yearn for when all we really need is some inspiration for our craft. Maybe change up on subjects, assign yourself a project. My current digital camera is an old Nikon D800E, it works very well and I can't complain about the 36 mp resolution. I yearn for the medium format, but mostly for the change in aspect ratio and secondly for the resolution.

I don't know why I've only just discovered you but I very much like your photography and style. I use KASE filters and find them really easy to use and great quality. I can get you a discount code if you like. I live in an area with scrubby coppiced woodland, it's hard getting decent shots, your as superb in that beautiful woodland. My only criticism is your audio levels, your speech is several dB quieter than the music so I'm having to turn it up and down. The music is great but it's what you are saying that is really important and I feel that should be louder than the music.

Thank you for your kind comment. I'm glad my photography resonates with you. I think I have found some filters, but thank you for the kind offer. Thank you I did actually have issues with this and have made some adjustments in my latest video. Hopefully it's a little better. Will be changing my audio setup soon.

I had a 5D MKII for 3 years , I got it second hand with little knowledge of the history of it - first two years great images were sharp , great contrast etc and I was not looking to change - then in June this year it developed a fault - and I was getting all kinds of odd images (histogram , live view all looked great) but most came out overexposed or slightly out of focus - the Mirror Assembly had failed...and cost to repair was an issue for me. I had bought a Canon M50 to record video on , but that has now stepped up to be my main camera, and other than lack of weather sealing I don't see a reason to return to full frame now (maybe if I won the lottery I might). Like others here I use Kase for my filter system - the magnetic CPL is great , but I haven't bought all my Graduated and ND filters from them as those are less used so less important to be top brand ones..

Another advocate of Kase filters here. Love Wentwood, I was there a few weeks ago, I also recommended the place to Gary Norman photography and he did a view on the place - quite funny plus woodland photography if you like that sort of thing. Loved the abstract image at 10:33 it was differnt. I used to have a 5D3 then went to a 5D3 and I'll ne honest the 2 had a better dynamic range than the 3 for me although I loved the 3 I don't think at that time I needed to change - but we all get a bit of gas now & again. For video I use Movavi, I ain't really any good at the editing stuff and can't afford Prem Pro - also I had a look at it and it was way beyond my learning scope if I am honest..lol. Save for a van ! The footage at 21:00.. wonderful, was that drone footage or have you got a really stgeady hand? atb Alan

Oh great, Tase filters seem to be the most recommended so far so will head over to their website and have a look. Great, is he a KZreadr? I had several abstract images and got annoyed at them all until I flipped one and then it just kinda came together. I think your right, save for a van then a house. I can't get it the other way round as I will probably have to wait longer. People say when you have a house your locked in and you can't afford a thing. 21:00 was drone footage, I managed to film in the forest and avoid the branches somehow! :)

21 mp is realy enough for A2 prints. The camera is perfect. Look for a prime to get better image resolution, Would investigate to do a free editing program lige Darktable. Only buy a good polarizer other filters can completely be replaced by bracketing.
