I sort and file by year and month, and store on external drives. I don’t keyword, only add stars to what I think are editable images that might be portfolio worthy. “Portfolio worthy” is a topic that warrants discussion on its own. 💜

Very enjoyable and always great advice. May I add that I find the use of 'keywords' in Lightroom invaluable, they make the search process almost foolproof. Be proud of your early youtube work, it takes guts to put yourself out there, especially with limited experience and equipment. Wonderful to see how far you've come and how polished and professional your videos have become 👏👏🙏🏻

I think what you really need is a NAS or Network Attached Server for backing up all of your photos to one location. Synology makes a lot of great products. It would be a much better experience than shuffling around hard drives. You could then backup your final images to the cloud, for a true backup.

Hi, Suzannah. This is the reason why I don't use Lightroom but ACR. I use this in combination with Bridge. I have a bit more freedom where to put my images. But what you say about the "non-keepers" is true, and I will do that from now on. Many thanks for this tip it saves me a lot of space on my hard drives. Cataloguing Images is probably the hardest part of photography , its only when some 1 say,s do u have a photo of..... and you say yes and then go through the ever increasing build up of harddrives 😵‍💫 ! so yes great advice for the beginner to get a handle on storage right from the start ! thanks for the trip down memory lane !

Thank you Suzannah i really enjoyed that video. i have only just started following you as i have also just strated my own you tube channel. i watch a number of landscape photographers channels Henry Turner & Gary Gough are my favs. I hope you manage to stay consistant and enjoy your photography.

I gave up using lightroom to import files. What i do now is copy the files into the required folder, i then point LR to the folder and if i move the folder i can just point LR to the folder(s) again. For back up drives i use a terramaster 5 bay jbod enclosure, that way i only need one power supply rather than multiple sockets for external drives. The good thing about the terramaster is it can be used as a jbod enclosure or a mix of jbod/ raid enclosure.

Brilliant video and very useful tips. It's nice to still have old videos to look back on. It was worth hiking up the mountain absolutely stunning views and weather conditions. I've made mistakes myself but it's oka and you will always learn from it. Thank you for sharing your video Suzannah

Some good advice there. Keeping Y.T channel going is a difficult task, particularly one that is about photography and making photographs than other aspects of the business. Without trying to be dismissive, it seems that photographing attractive young ladies pay much more than photographing landscape. This is more to do with the nature of the viewer than the skill of the photographer and her/his video making.

Yes this is very true, there is more work and sacrifice involved. Something I'm willing to now do moving forwards as I am really enjoying landscape work at the moment

All good advice. I would suggest the use of keywords over renaming files. I keep my raw files separate from my processed images which I have come back from Photoshop as TIF files.

Think we all make mistakes when storing videos and images when first starting out. I did giggle to myself when you said about doubling up on images as I done that too. Now I put my KZread video and the images I take in the same folder as easy to fine. Great video. Take care. Shawn.

On the point of Culling your files, I have to slightly disagree to a certain extent on that. Now unless the images are completely out of focus, really bad exposure, things that are literally unsalvageable in it's given data, I NEVER delete any raw files, and here is why; With continuing improved editing technology, I have resurrected and polished many images I thought were No good. I am a nature and model photographer and I can't tell you how many times over the last couple of decades worth of files I have revisited not only the "keepers" but also the not so great ones with a new eye, new composition (via cropping) eye, and a new idea on how those images can present themselves, and with things like Subject Masking now, it has given life to files I thought were going to the Trash Bin. Some of my recent favorites are ones I shot back in 2005 or so, ones I have totally dismissed for one reason or another... The great thing these days is External HDs are not as expensive as they once were so keeping your files is not a big deal anymore. Even if some are suspect in quality, just looking at those old unedited images can spark new ideas or improve on them in future shoots.

I totally agree with you, I am that point of going through all my old photos and revisiting ones with a fresh eye to repolish. I had just stored. However after 10 years or so that's alot of images and I think as you evolve you get to a point where you are more ruthless with your images. I always still keep 'the bangers' aka the portfolio shots or images you just really like and then I'll keep additional extras I think are worth keeping in case, like now years down the line I change my mind. My error was that I kept everything, even the out of focused ones. So my new import process is to delete from disk the photos I'm 100% sure I'll never use. This will be images such as ICM shots where there isn't much difference to tell two images apart or images I just know I dislike. This is a big move to delete images but I am being very careful as to what stays and what goes from now on. All the old stuff on my many many hards drives is pretty much staying put. I'm just trying to sort out what is where and start naming old files so I can search for them in the future. I hope this comment is useful for anyone watching the video and is considering deleting old files, I also wouldn't recommend that because I've found some beautiful images 🙌 Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts 💭

@@SuzannahMary Agreed. My rule of thumb is, if there is any speck of "should I or shouldn't I" in the culling (initial delete stage): Keep it. It would have to be a hard No Good for me to send it to the grave. Glad I stuck with that. My storage issueue is all the jpeg copies and edits I saved in the same HD which confuses the Lr library process. Someday I'll have to dig in and sort all of it out without losing any Raw file permanently.... btw, those ICM shots can come in handy sometimes for creative abstract overlay texture, but I hear you, if many are identical then yes, save the HD space :)

What's wrong with pink? It's my favorite color. I frequently wear some kind of pink when I dress for church.

Yes there is nothing wrong with pink, I used to have pink hair too! I think the excessive pink is the issue here 😅

Perhaps you had nothing to do with the title of your video. I'm not sure how those things are developed. Maybe they are written by the folks at KZread. I am hoping that is the case because the word for making a mistake or blunder is spelled OOPS, not OPPS.
