Фильм және анимация

Hello, Judy. A very educational video that everyone can benefit from. I certainly don't say I'm a pro, but I know most of it. I only work indoors with flash so you will learn how to use them properly. But there are always those little things that you forget and you come across them in these types of webinars. I also sometimes work with LED light, but speedlight gives more control, I completely agree with you. But this video makes it clear that we actually do a lot of things to get the light right. Another great video, Judy. Kind regards from the Netherlands, Antoine.

Hi Judy, thanks for sharing your set-ups with us, they have served me well. I have one small question regarding your stand with a reflector connected to it. How do you manage to attach the reflector on the stand, I see some kind of clamp on top? Could you tell me what the name is of that piece?

I'm glad you found the video helpful. I'm not sure what that clamp is called... maybe a reflector clamp. I found it on Amazon, but if you call a camera shop they should be able to help.

Very good, Judy is an excellent teacher. I would love another future webinar where she takes using flats a step further, perhaps into a little more complicated or creative areas, high speed sync for example. I feel confident that I would understand what she explains

Thanks, Deborah. I'm glad it was helpful to you. Like I say in the video, I'm not an "expert" on flash; just someone who's good at explaining things. I'm sure there are more advanced videos on KZread that can help you out.

Thank you so much. Could you please do a step by step flower portrait on black background sometime?

You're very welcome, Fiona. I'm not sure what you need to know that isn't in the video. If you want to post a more specific question, I'm happy to answer it. I have no plans for a separate video on that topic.

Hi Thank you, for some reason my black background is never truly black. I will try a few photos by moving the subject closer to camera. I’m mainly an analogue photographer with my own darkroom, so will just keep experimenting. You are an excellent teacher.

The trick is to have your black background far enough away from the subject, and block as much light from it as possible, perhaps by using other pieces of black foamcore board. You may have to do a bit of burning in post production, but the distance and blocking light will help a lot. I often use the trifold display you saw in the video, and then put another black board across the top to block light from above.

Hi Judy, Thanks for the video. My question is about build quality. I'm about to invest in flash and have been eyeing up a Godox model (the V860II), but I've heard some people say that it's prone to breaking at the hotshoe part, as the flash head is very stiff to turn and this puts a bit of pressure on it. Otherwise, the Godox seems to be a very good option. If I'm going to cough up for a flash unit, I want it to last. I notice that you use Yongnuo. Do you have any observations on the build quality and performance of this brand?

Thanks for your feedback, Peter. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have no personal experience with Godox, but it is generally thought to be a step above Yongnuo. If I was starting out knowing what I know now, I would probably buy Godox. You might want to find a Facebook group on flash and ask your question there.

I usually shoot in manual mode. I've just started to experiment with flash. I set the camera/flash for TTL, but I don't change to Program or one of the priority modes. If I change the aperture or shutter speed, it appears that the image exposure changes. Does TTL work when the camera is in manual mode?

  • @judyhancockholland8007

I never use TTL because it's less consistent and reliable than manual flash, so can't answer your question. I strongly recommend you take the time to learn to use your flash manually. If you follow the video, this should take you long and will give you much more consistent results.

It likely depends on your camera. Please see my other comment, and thanks for watching.
