Lol, all 90’s Namco though. Time Crisis 1, Ace Combat 2 and the others, Soul Blade etc, Ridge Racer, Lucky & Wild, Steel Gunner. Namco of that era > Nintendo and Sega

Move Me is probably my favorite video game song ever. Type 4 has an amazing soundtrack, and it certainly speaks to its quality that it’s not only so beloved so many years later, but that Kohta Takahashi continues trying to capture its magic on his YT channel.

All Ridge Racer PS1 games all have masterpiece soundtracks.

This is still my favorite racing game of all time. Sure, there are "technically better" racing games nowadays, but the vibe this game has is unrivalled to this day. The mix of the soundtrack, the tracks, the art style, the lighting and visuals come together to form an experience that is far greater than the sum of the parts. The soundtrack specially, is avantgarde as far as I'm concerned, still listen to it everyday (driving late night listening to "Your Vibe", with the roads all empty, only you, the car and the music, is an amazing experience). Really wish Namco remastered this game, and even tried another go at the Ridge Racer with the same approach, no other racing game to this date scratches the same itch R4 does for me.

Literally just bought a physical of this game for the soundtrack alone. Disgustingly good music.

This game is a great companion on portable hardware (Steam Deck for me) - as there are over 300 cars to unlock, but each race only takes around 3-6 minutes to complete. So chipping away at the grand prix whenever I have some spare time has been how I've spent most of my 2023. For those who love the soundtrack, Kohta Takahashi released an album last year (REIWA TYPE 4) as a reimagining of what a new Ridge Racer games' soundtrack might be.

I have a deck but just redownloaded this and gt psp on my white vita slim for taking to work and stuff.

Loved this game as a kid, still listen to the OST to this day. This game and Wipeout 3 had an amazing vibe to them.

RRT4 is eternal because you can taste the artistry. It's all over the game from the menu design, story, visuals and of course the masterpiece that is the soundtrack. Time cannot weather this game.

This game really makes life here in labor camp lot more bearable. Thank you for what you have done

This game has some of the best style you'll see in a racing game, or any game for that matter. Driving in this game, especially at nighttime, is always relaxing. I wish the ost was on streaming, but CD copies aren't crazy expensive.

played this game for the first time like 2 years ago and it blew me away for a 20+ year old game. spot on about the aesthetics/soundtrack, drifting round tracks perfectly and gaining speed with that OST going, pure dopamine

Exactly what my thoughts were playing this last year, aesthetics were very well conveyed and is graphically impressive for a ps1. Racing felt great and I quite enjoyed the story, especially with the PRC and DUG racing teams. A very solid and overlooked game. So many aspects still feel modern and holds up incredibly well. I was blown away with how good it was for 1998

One of the best racers on the Playstation. Ridge Racer 4 never fails to keep me hooked with it.

This game has the same kinda quality as Tekken 4, just the atmosphere, the Y2K theming, the music, it's all so amazing

Still own part 5…but 4 something about 4…and now me as a single dad of 4 just speaks way heavier to me and what times has brought…and celebrating and defeat…I dunno I’m drunk…

The soundtrack is goated and the intro triggers peak late 90s cinematic nostalgia. I hope one day someone creates a 60fps duckstation hack/cheat for this.

yeah, full working 60 fps would be awesome, it exists, but doubles the speed of game sadly, GT1/2 work perfectly however and it is game changer

It would be cool to have seen Ridge Racer to get a modern AAA revival like GT. Racing games back than had a very pure racing experience which I often miss with modern ones

My most played PS1 game besides Crash Bandicoot 3. The music is a vibe.

I’ll never understand why Namco made R4 as amazing as it was and then was like “welp we’re never doing that again”

GamingBrit is one of the few, if only, Gaming channels that I both subscribe to and can re-watch his videos for the sake of pure enjoyment. His view of video games comes from that late 90’s earth 2000’s energy and its so amazing.

R4's soundtrack reminds me a lot of Street Fighter 3's musical styles. It took elements of DnB/jungle/hip-hop and blended it with the more traditional themes of characters (Gouki is a great example) to capture the vibe of the game perfectly. R4 is underrated in so many aspects, but great to see someone discussing the audio.

Watched half of this video, went and downloaded it off ps plus, played through 2 grand prixs, had a dang blast. I felt like i was one with the car!

Ridge Racer type 4 is a masterpiece that shouldn't be forgotten, it will always be one of my favorite racing game of all time.

This game has such a cozy ambience to it, such a good game to boot up on a rainy day. My goal is to collect all 320 cars in the game, and I'm still working on it. Can't wait for when they remaster this and Ace Combat 3

Whoa. Some wild timing with this upload. I just picked up a Japanese PS2 here in Osaka and have been playing a ton of games, but Ridge Racer V has been my OBSESSION lately. I just finished all the duels last night and have been eagerly waiting to play Ridge Racer Type 4, which begins tonight!

Very forward thinking for a 1998 racing game to incorporate Y2K into its plot and themes. That sure was a good year for street racing in the mountains, the same year Initial D premiered on TV in Japan.

Finally a good homage to this legend of a game, and the OST is top!

I grew up on RRV and didn't discover this one until a couple years ago and have loved it ever since. I admittedly haven't enough time in to unlock a lot of things, but the style of it all is so good that it feels important to me all the same

It’s strange that Namco hasn’t made a new Ridge Racer game on modern PlayStation consoles since then, cause it is a pretty fun racing game. I remember playing Ridge Racer on the PSP, and it was so much fun.

Couldn’t have described the feeling of the game better. I mean, you absolutely nailed it; that classy and calm feel I’ve never gotten from another game.

Friends of mine PRAISED this game while I tried to avoid it. I thought it was overhyped. Then I played it myself and GOD the controls and drive feeling were the smoothest I'd ever played in a racing game. I played some solid racing games, but RR deserved a medal! Good video!

I had bell on for so long and I missed your past 3 uploads. So glad I came back to this channel because these reviews never disappoint!

I highly recommend playing it with the Ridge Racer 4 controller too, some of the strongest force feedback I've ever felt on a controller, it'll literally rip it out of your hands!

Ridge racer 64 is one of the first games I ever played I believe, alongside Mario 64 and diddy Kong racing

I'm glad I'm not the only one who watched the prologue for Rage Racer and thought "Man, this music is waaaaay too serious and epic for what we're actually doing in the game."

I get chills and get lit every time I hear Lucid Rhythms and when I see the song being played on the track imo fits perfectly with that song (Out Of Blue) but Move Me, Naked Glow, The Ride, and Revlimit Funk were in my top five Lucid Rhythms being my #1

R4 is also a technical MASTERPIECE. How did they get that draw distance, those lighting effects, the polygon count, and still staying at the max PSX resolution. It's truly a wonderful piece of software, even outside of the videogame itself.

Man, this was the game that started it all for me, the first game I'd ever owned, that came boxed with the first console I'd ever owned. Just the stellar soundtrack is enough to trigger such intense nostalgia in me. Kudos for covering this forgotten gem

I recommend everyone play this in first person even if you usually dont in racing games the game just controls better for some reason

Oh my God it's one of namco's oldest franchises whose name isn't tales or tekken or soul caliber or ace combat or even pacman. I remember Ridge Racer for the most part.

Fun fact about the dialogue that you get after beating a race in the Grand Prix mode, it obviously changes depending on your placement in a race but it also changes if you lose a race and win on the retry. For instance I actually got a slightly different after race cutscene on RT Solvalou once despite getting first since I had lost that first time around. This game will always have a special place in my heart since it was literally the first game I ever played and it still has my favorite drifting mechanics in the whole series. It's been with me (both literally and figuratively since I still have the original disc) since I was a kid and i'm glad I was able to grow up in a time when games like this were still coming out regularly.

Its been 25 years since the release of RIDGE RACER TYPE 4, and its still a truly masterpiece game! It also has the most number of cars in the entire Ridge Racer series, with 321.

Just finished the game. With a cold beer, the smell of summer night with a light breeze and the best ost. French girl ending. It was awesome. THANKS

I still remembered that Ridge Racer Hi Spec Demo that graphics have 60fps although you are only able to race 1 on 1 against the AI.

I'm pretty sure everybody played Time attack in any ridge racer and drove the car slowing around the track like your cruising and played there favourite chill music to relax at night. That's what I did in the late 90s lol.

Aight Brit, you're right on the precipice of discovering Ace Combat.

Really hope Namco gives this series another chance like Ace Combat.

When Brit covers one your all time favourite games. One so formative it helped shape a man's career

Still is one of the best racing games of alltime even in 2024.

My favourite PS1 game, and it's not even close. I could play this ANY day.

Greatest racing game of all time in my book. The feel of the game will never be matched. Praying for a remake someday on a next gen console

The music is mint, Jungle is one of my favourite genres

The team worked wonders within the hardware's limitations. The graphics are very low res by today's standards but they managed to produce visuals that feel very grounded and realistic. Those night time tracks feel so authentic and still look stunning to me. I don't say that about a lot of older games.

Namco has the most special of places in my heart

Thanks for being one of maybe three people on KZread who doesn't visually destroy old console games by jacking up the resolution through emulators, there are a small handful of people, including myself, who sincerely appreciate it.

Damn those menus are Suda-tier.

It's so dang good. I even have the soundtrack in my playlist.

This game and Tekken 4 were two of my favorites as a kid and you captured why I liked them so much

Those games are all forgotten gems. I played nearly all of them over the years and each one of them has an amazing vibe and outstandingly good soundtrack. It’s so sad to see that one of my most favorite racing series is dead by now, even though modern implementations could take the series to the next level. I hope that one day, namco will change their minds and give this series another chance by giving it the next gen installment it always deserved. ❤

I’m glad I still own a physical copy of this game. Easily one of, if not THE best racing game on the PS1. Great review.

To be fair Rage Racer is what got me into the series and Ridge Racer Type 4 is the definitive version on the PSX era.

I've been seeing a lot of love for R4 lately, and it makes me so happy. R4 is my favorite racing game of all time

All I knew about Ridge Racer before this was when forum dudes had a meltdown when this interview happened *According to a magazine article for Incite Video Gaming Magazine about Ridge Racer 64 for the Nintendo 64 from February 2000, a Japanese male developer couldn't find a woman's face for Reiko so he had a quick shave, conducted a spot of eyebrow plucking and scanned his own head in as Reiko is "part man".*

Just finished it with all the trophies, fantastic arcade game even today.

i've been seeing a lot of ridge racer love lately and i gotta say it's good to see a good game get love. The soundtrack is especially wonderfull.

This needs a remaster.

Games from the 5th and 6th generations of consoles just continue to age like fine wine.

I might have to revisit this one on PS5. It's cool they have it available that way, though I hope one day they make a collection of all the early Ridge Racers (including arcade), perhaps with performance enhancements (they could easily run at 4K/120Hz on PS5) and online play.

Just finished gran prix and this showed up on my feed great video for a really great game, short in today's standards but really really fun

Picked up R4 a couple of months ago, but never really dig into it much. But in the little time I DID play it, I was instantly hooked on the menu's and soundtrack!

namco was wild on ps1 every game of that company i love it , i played a lot , and i mean a lot this game tryng to unlock the 320 cars, a insane amount of cars for a arcade game , the music the atmosphere of this game is superb, and the other game i love a lot in this period was Ace combat from the same developers, they use the same engine and dev team, so a lot of thing they learned on ridge racer they apply on Ace combat 2 and 3 , and then with Ace combat 4 they combine some people and they made Project aces , so this period was pretty interesting

Thanks to this video I found out that my playstation classic has the NTSC version of this game, excited to try it!

Type 4 released before I was born so I only really played 5,6 & 7. Only recently picked up a copy and it is probably my fav out of the 4.
