I’ve had a couple of dogs that would let me use and emery board. It worked particularly well for me on one of my dogs who didn’t like the pressure of the nail clippers and the sound and vibration of the Dremel. Her nails were a constant battle.

That’s difficult! Glad you found something that works sometimes desensitizing is a long uphill battle.

It's so hard for me, but I just keep trying! I drew blood the last time (with the shield!), and that puts me off. I've got all those environmental obstacles, and my own "mental" ones. There are literally no groomer services here, and the vet? forget it. Thank you for the deepest clarity I've found!

Wow! Thank you so much for the lovely comment. I’m so glad you found it helpful! If you ever have any questions don’t hesitate to reach back out. I’m happy to answer anything! I know how nerve wracking this can be, but I hope you (and pup!) find some comfort in a routine that works for you both.

Try that on a rescued mastiff/greyhound cross who is large and still quite powerful at 14.5, with black claws and who hates having his feet touched! I’m lucky if I can clip 1 claw in any kind of fashion, before he moves away.

It can definitely be more of a battle for some! At such an age I wouldn’t push it, stress on an older dog is definitely not recommended.

Is there a way you can do a video of the toe that was all the way around and grinded? I can't see exactly what you are cutting, etc. :)

What do you advise for the dogs hair between the toes / paw pads? I trim them occasionally I use treats when trimming the nails My Malinois has very dark nails so it would go down to trial & error at first. I use a cheap common nail file for the edges. Great instructive video, thanks

Thank you! So happy to hear you found it helpful. If the hair is in the way it absolutely can be trimmed away (I’d use clippers if possible) if it can but pushed out of the way you can do that and hold it as well to keep it from falling back into place. In terms of dark nails just remember to trim off a bit at a time until you see a dark circle in the middle of the nail, once you reach that you want to slow down or stop. If it’s just a small black dot, proceed with caution, if it’s a large black dot stop there. Nail files work great! Same idea as a grinder but you just need a lot more patience lol

When the nail/claw is solid black, how do you know how far to cut?

You’re looking a black dot that forms in the middle of the nail as you’re clipping it back (white nails have a pink dot) once you reach the dot you can trim the edges off the sides!

I use the flashlight on my cellphone to see into our girls black nails. That's if your dog will cooperate of course. A quick look using the flashlight just reassured me that the quik was further back than I thought.

Yes! That’s a great tip. Some grinders even have LED lights for that purpose as well. Always useful!

Hi! Thanks for this video. Would you be able to demonstrate this same technique (the last toe you did) but when a dog is laying down? Like on their side. Its hard for my boy to stand long (bad bk legs) so he lays down when I do his nails, but I still cant get the quik receeded (Ive used clippers before and now I just use a grinder). OR would you say I could do the upside down setup even if he is laying on his side? Might be hard to see that way though huh.

Hey! That’s a great idea. I will make a plan to do a video like that as it would be helpful to many! You can absolutely do it in the same way while they are laying on their side, might take a bit of practice to get the right angles to see properly but definitely do-able. I’ll try and get this content out soon!

Hi!! So I gave this a try on my boy. Went eh ok haha. Back feet went better than front. The front I feel like there isnt enough "space" to bend and lift the foot up a little to see the underneath side if that makes sense. I could kinda see the areas on the front toes when they were under themselves and him on his side, but still not as good as back ones. When you make that video let me know and ill check it out =) maybe ill get some tips from you for the front ones. @GoFetchDogGrooming

It may take a bit of practice to get the angles right, can I ask do you have your dog flip sides or does he lay just on one side? I will try to make content for both scenarios so people have options though! But I think having a visual is easier than trying to explain generally so I did add it into the lineup I should hopefully have it filmed, edited and posted fairly soon! Hopefully by your next nail trim 😆

Hi! He lays in one side usually but not all the way on side, he can lay all the way but then he'll prop himself back up still on the side but propped up not laying flat. I did try it again for his fronts and it's hard even for the paw that is closest up you know, just not enough room lol. Maybe if he lays all the way flat on side it may be better but can't get him to stay there long enough haha (not yet lol). I'll be on the lookout for your video of both scenarios =) @GoFetchDogGrooming

Very interesting thank you! My 3 years old rescue dog wouldn't let me or the groomer or the vet touch her feet.. She had to have anesthesia during her dental to have her nails shortened to the maximum (black nails).. She is restless and keeps moving all the time which makes the thing dangerous for her. Maximum treats are used all the time but noway!! In addition, she is a very energetic breed. I purchased a file hoping she allows me to do it soon while they are still short. .. Although it will take ages to trim. They grow approximately 3 to 4 mm per month.. She run on grass and sand, so cannot use them very much😢

Sounds like you’re doing your best! It can be a long process particularly for rescues. Hoping the file works well for you guys, but just keep giving her treats for any interactions with her paws and/or the file. It could take much longer than others but eventually it should become a good thing! If her diet allows as well gives her lots of really high value food such as a good stinky cheese 😁 fingers crossed 🤞🏻

@@GoFetchDogGrooming thank you for your reply! I know it's a challenge unfortunately! She isn't an easy breed ( German Pinscher, photo) with a difficult past. When I got her a year ago she knew nothing, just wanted to leave and was mad inside the house ! Now she is completely settled and a very happy dog !! her trainer helped me a lot and she has progressed so much! Yes she loves cheese.

Hey that’s a win! Keep working on it! Bring out the clippers and give her treats for any interaction with it (smelling it, looking at it) Eventually after a few days of that try clipping one nail and reward her. Just do the one for that day! See if you can make some progress that way! It’s all one day (and one nail!) at a time. 😊
