    As a Caterpillar technician we have to check main bearing clearances, we use kidney lopped 15W40 to lubricate bearings and other spare parts in order to complete the overhaul, always use tons of torque wrenchs and specific tools as per the Caterpillar. But when I see these technicians and their skills should be appreciated 👌.

    I got an inline 4 cylinder Nissan diesel engine overhauled like this. It worked for 1 year (approx) 30k kms. These guys are brilliant no doubt but you cannot beat physics and mechanical sciences with your experience. Torque wrench is the most important thing when it comes to rebuilding an engine. A little difference in the bolts will eventually lead to imbalances slowly. And an imbalance part in the engine is totally insane. One of my main cap got loose and broke out. Also after 10k kms the engine sound changed and i could see some leakages. I respect their experience but still believe in the right way of doing things!

    Many times experience can in fact be better. Not always but most of the time, experienced techs will know more than the engineers, we can all agree there. Inexperienced techs definitely not. Ill give you one example. Cummins isx cm870 and cm871 head bolts. Many guys , including myself torque higher than spec. Keep in mind this is going by feel with a 6 foot long cheater bar on a 3/4 drive ratchet. An engine trusted to more than a million miles. Yes i definitely do use a torque wrench a lot and they are great, however some circumstances experience and knowledge can in fact be better. Living proof is still running down the road to this day. Trust me if i did a half ass job my boss would not let me do it that way. But going by spec is about a 60/40 chance it will leak in the next 5 years, going by feel so far 0 leak. Not saying i am the best by any means, many better than me out there, they will also do the same in the cases where there experience has taught them what works and what does not. Im definitely not saying these guys did a perfect job, and i definitely do not know any of them so i have no idea of there skills, but dont automatically assume this is a hack job build, it may be, but it also could be better than what a tech fresh out of school with all the tools and books they make could do.

  • @ribvicky

    @ribvicky

    @@poellot i gree with you BUT why take risk 😁 These guys are brilliant no doubt but 50 50 chances for an engine is not viable! Newbies with a torque wrench are equally bad. All i was saying is having appropriate tools with good experience is always a benifit and satisfaction. 👍

  • @poellot

    @poellot

    @@ribvicky exactly, that is why myself as well as many others do absolutely not just follow the book when torqueing those peticular bolts mentioned. It may or may not leak in a year or 2 when doing it by the book with a torque wrench then torque turn, but doing it by feel has for atleast every one i have heard from had 100 percent success rate. Much better than using the torque wrench.

    Thank you for that comment, man. I was sitting here trying to figure out how these guys are getting away with just winging it without a torque wrench. I don't' know a whole lot about diesel, but I know THAT is critical shit and I couldn't imagine just feeling it, not matter how much experience you have. Greetings fellow wrench twirlers. Nice to see your shop cat, bet that one takes no bs from any rat. Not a bad job on the big inline six. I liked all the clean smooth engine surfaces and plenty of oil on all the moving parts. But, the turbo outlet manifold had either the wrong bolt used or hard grit on the threads. Your tech cranked it in anyway. Scary sounds. Was one oil-pan bolt broken off in the cases? Not a critical bolt of course. At least two guys re torqued each vital bolt or nut. Yes they are tight enough! Be nice to see the fresh engine in place. And running smoothly. Good luck.

You could have shown diagnosing the problem, taking the engine out, disassembly of the engine, rebuilding it, reinstalling the engine, the truck starting up for the first time and finally the truck back on the road working. Edit it into a 2 or 3 part series, you will get many more views and a lot more subscribers. These video’s of rebuilding an engine is all over KZread from Pakistan, India, etc, but I have yet to see one as I described. People want the whole story from beginning to end.
