Rebuilding a GM / Corvette Tilt / Telescopic Steering Column

NOTE: NEW LINK BELOW
will go through in some detail how I re-assembled the column. When accompanied by other reference materials, this video should be a nice visual aid in helping understand how these things work.

    My father used to own a company he was the only person in the County who could do columns..late 80s early 90s the were stealing Gm saginaws at a rate of 20 a day where I’m at..needless to say my friends this brings back some great memories going to fix stolen recovery after stolen recovery with my father growing up. Wouldn’t change those days for anything..the business served its purpose we saw the writing on the wall by way of key fobs etc. A lot of guys can take em apart not a lot of guys can finish em. Thanks for the video buddy.

    Thanks for the info Mate. I'm trying to do the column on my sister's Trans-Am here in Australia. Still having a lot of trouble getting the pivot pins out. Can't believe how complicated these Chevy columns are! Funny this, they're almost identical on the outside to our HZ Holden columns. But the good thing is they have about a third of the parts inside...So much easier to work on. Seriously, could Chev have made these anymore complicated?...

    Hi, great video. I took my 72 column apart to change the lock cylinder. After putting the lock plate back there telescopic shaft is jammed in the bottom position and won't move. It moved freely before. Any idea why this could be?

  • @mathiaswallgren6307

    I figured it out myself. I didn't see the groove on the shaft and when it was at the very bottom the retainer ring did not go into that groove, but rather pushed against the shaft and locking it. Maybe worth mentioning that it can't be in its bottom position when putting the retainer ring on?

    Hello; I am looking for a replacement part and hope you can point me in the right direction. In the column we have a three-way switch. As you know the turn signal lever is the headlight dimmer, whipper control plus cruse control. Now the little guy that has the dimmer, togal feature and little twist thing for the headlight switch. @ 16:22( the unit you were talking about) I am looking for it. Do you know where i can get pne from? Great video. Thanks!

    Took mine apart. The wedge was removed from the upper shaft, I didn't note which way the notched side was pointing. Found your video and it answered a lot of questions for me, set up is same as mine, but you did not mention which way the "key" was to be facing. Notch to the driver or the curved portion to the driver?

  • @Stoneface_Garage

    @Stoneface_Garage

    If I get what you mean, the notch in the key has to face up (driver) to engage the lock shaft

    Very helpful video! On my own short upper shaft, I have the actuator rod and the wedge keyway, but when I tighten the bolt, it doesn't lock in place and seems as though the bolt isn't making contact with the rod to push it against the wedge. Any advice?

  • @Stoneface_Garage

    @Stoneface_Garage

    11 ай бұрын

    Assuming you have the correct length bolt...Check if you have any burrs in the slot or on the wedge, or the actuator shaft that could be holding it from sliding into a lock position. Add a little bit of grease to help it move (but not on the outer wedge surface.)

    Thanks. Are you missing this or can't find it in the assembly? I think I put that section in fast speed in the video...I could post the normal uncut clip. That spring could be made from a small piece of spring steel if needed. It holds the sector and rack teeth firmly engaged. I suspect the operation would work but be very sloppy without it.

Or does the plastic cover suppose to hold the C clip when it comes out? Or holds it in place? Or it’s suppose to not move anywhere? Pleaseee i need help.

    Another quick question can you please help me with about the ball bearing rings? I’ve bought some new ones from corvette central and basically they were that hard to slot in, i had to tap them in with a hammer. The balls don’t spin and the plastic thing doesn’t rotate now that it’s in there. It’s almost like the metal ring around the plastic ring is too thick? Is that normal? Or is there something completely wrong with the steering column? Also does it matter what way it faces? It’s just sitting in there super tight.
