wow...I've been making coins by hand for years. this is seriously the most knackered drop hammer press I've seen. Just strike by hand. with all the energy you put into that drop hammer press, why not just build a screw press? or a hydraulic press?

Korey Cornelis well a few things wrong. His i beams are to spread out, the weight should be stable and not just falling like a sack of rocks, it should be stable as it falls, and the hammer he's dropping should be directly hitting the dies. Or, he could literally go to harbour freight and buy a 20 ton shop press and make coins. It works and I use it as well. 50 tons is ideal but you'll have to find one. By hand hammer striking, you can work faster and more efficient. It's why it was used long after screw presses, roller presses and drop hammers presses were invented. It just works damn good. And I've never once had a mishap swinging a hammer to dies. All it takes is a few practice swings and you've got it. Can use a simple 3-4lb hammer that's all you need. Would be surprised.....anneal your blanks and rock and roll. The trick to all of this....truly. Lies in the die sinking....I've been training for years to sink dies the old school way and it's hard! But it's fun as hell and maybe I should make a video on it? I could teach all of KZread how to make their own stable dies from steel, with only a few tools. I could teach how to make dies from almost anything really. It's what I do and I enjoy it, so I'm not trying sound like an asshole know it all. But perhaps a proper video needs to be made.

Just because it's post apocalyptic doesn't mean it has to be shitty. This press is wobbly and inefficient. How hard is it to make guide rails and a decent quick release. The die could obviously be improved as well. This guy is just delusional.

Feel like casting coins would be easier but love the idea.

just cause civilization ends doesnt mean all the factories and manufacturing equipment suddenly doesn't work we could just generate power and get right back to making things relatively quickly

I like it! consistent weight and metallic composition is important. If you have silver wire, measure how much length is 1/4 oz and melt it into a pool, then stamp it... I remember when they pulled the 90% silver coins from circulation (1965). From the very start people stashed away tons of it through laundromats, casinos and places that took in volume of coins. In a post-Apocalypse world you can be secure in the value of a silver quarter by checking the spot price of silver... maybe you could buy a house of an old car with $50 worth of coins. But it would be fun to design coins. Your coin press weight needs channels on either side like a guillotine so it drops evenly... I am an artisan like yourself..

You missed one critical distinction: "coins" are only issued by governments. In the context that you described, you are talking about making tokens (which may have arbitrary or variable value). Such tokens could be useful in trade, but it could take decades before a post-apocalyptic government might come into being in order to legislate a coinage act.

+Kurt Schultz Not necessarily. A silver coin vs a silver "token" weighing the same amount and of the same purity, would be of equal value regardless of government intervention. Fiat currency is not the only means of bartering.

While coins might circulate in post-apocalypse trade, their production would have to be pre-apocalypse. Any bit of standardized value represented by a metal disk, whether made to augment barter or to replace barter, which was produced after an apocalypse, would BY DEFINITION be a token (unless and until there occurred sufficient government to legislate some sort of a "Coinage Act"). To put it succinctly "People cannot make coins (unless they work for a government-authorized mint)".The relative values of coins vs. tokens wasn't at issue. I know that it is possible to make a token that is worth more than a coin, and vice-versa. Considering that a government can mandate usage of coins, when you contrast the values of tokens and coins of equal metallic content, size and purity, etc., the coins have an edge, in the associated "acceptability value"; it can be mandated that coins be accepted, but acceptance of tokens is usually voluntary -- and negotiable.

+Kurt Schultz You realize a homeowners association is considered government? Any group within an apocalypse would be considered a government. As to why my neighborhood watch does not mint its own currency is that it is not accepted elsewhere. However if it was to say mint silver coins, a 1ounce silver coin would be worth any other 1 ounce silver coin, although you would not be using them at grocery stores, as they simply do not barter, just as I could not use coins minted in Africa at my local grocery store. To say that a group couldn't make coins is ridiculous, there is no variation between token and coins post apocalypse, nor is there going to be people who know the value of precious metals debating if they should accept a US silver coin vs a groups "pressed token". The only advantage you would have to a pre minted coin is that you are far more likely to have legitimate metals because it would be harder to make a fake. On the other side if people know so little of precious metals they probably wouldn't be aware of a minted coins true value being its material.

Toothpaste is pretty easy to make, and toilet paper is a waste of resources. I'd imagine we'd all have cloths that we'd set aside to use as tp, and clean them after ward.

Its copper it will cool to quickly. Besides I swing a hammer and make coins all the time, copper and silver are soft enough where they only need a little force to make them.

I was thinking of using a hydraulic jack to do something similar.. haven't tried it yet though

You need a soft metal like silver, gold or lead. Copper is more difficult and iron-nickel are impossible whitout a very strong industrial press.

Dude with a flypress is more precise and can do it for hours on end. This thing thou... I think it needs some love from an engineer.

Love the idea and concept of own money. But just a thought or 2. Why no make something that's more push and pressure rather than smacking it? (Genuinely curious). Also if u wanted to make that device shown more efficient, maybe have a rail on the side to make sure u get a consistent amount of pressure rather than use handcuffs. And maybe make a few in a row using a shared crank so u can make more that 1 coin at a time? (Just theorising here). However really cool project and I'm jealous that I can't make one due to lack of resources and motivation

that's based in a currency system that coins and notes represents something else of worth. In the past, the coins themselves were what was worth something due to silver/gold content.

Emmm you can improve your coin press a lot, just search for other cion presses, secondlly you don't need to much force, with simple hammer and moderate strength you can make a decent coin, you just need to heat it.

You can do the math yourself. It wouldn't do. There is not close to enough energy in a bullet to overcome the inertia of the slug and the die AND deform the copper.

Post apocalyptic society will have a very interesting economic system. Before we used coins because they were valued based on what they were made of. Now we have currency backed by a system of debt and its not backed by anything physical. In a world where you have no working government the currency will have to either be something desirable or useful, it can't spoil or rot, and it has to be universal. Without a working banking system the value of a coin it equal to the value the person that you are giving it to lend it. So If I don't need a gold coin, can't eat it, won't make a useful tool, and won't lay eggs, why would I trade you for it? If you had a banking system then you have yourself a system of currency that can be backed by value. People on the outskirts of settlements would probebly be less inclined to sell you stuff for your coins. Trade routes between places that require goods from each other would be first and then a bank would appear from a successful merchant or guild of merchants and then currency. The problem though is that currency will be backed by goods that the bank promises and offer you credit in return. If the bank decides to short your money they will then be able to sell you all your good back to you at a much higher price. Or they can control the currency and increase its value at a whim expecting you to give more goods for their currency. There is nothing from stopping them from doing this especially when credit is involved, the federal reserve does this all the time to acquire tangible items for the monopoly money that they print.

How's about just use a ten foot lever with fulcrum inches from the coin blank and have the die on a 90° or less pivot. If you're using pure enough copper, silver or gold as currency, just hanging on the lever will imprint it. Using less pure? Put weight on it. Slamming it is stupidly inefficient. - also Rick

Well in the post-apocalyptic world there will be no electricity and a hydraulic press requires electricity.

You do know you can buy hand operated coin press. Had can you mass produce lots of coins this way? When you need to lift tge weight up that far. And for currency to be viable it needs a common value how is that possible when you make your own it would have the same value to the person you are tradeing with. You would be better of just using existing coins buy just need enough for the value to work

There is no evidence that barter was ever a common way of trade. It is simply too unwieldy. It relies on both parties having something the other person wants, as well as a shared agreement of value. No, barter was only common between strangers who may never meet again, and rival groups who wouldn't give you things for free. Most likely, early economies relied on a gift economy with a sense of debt involved (You need food, so I give you food. I do this because I know when I need new clothes, you'll provide). It sounds like barter, but it's more honour system and the "debts" weren't strict in nature. It's more communal.
