Make Your Own Money with Sand Casting
Ойын-сауық
In the run up to Makers Central 2019, we have made some aluminium ‘Maker Coins’ to trade with other makers at the event. If you are going to Makers Central then come and find us to trade coins! If you don’t have coins then we’ll be handing out stickers all weekend!
This was our first time experimenting with lost foam casting. The method worked well but we were too ambitions with the level of detail we were going for. The laser-cut stamp worked out great; and it saved a huge amount of time in the sand casting set up.

@@BrothersMake Yeah, that really comes through, that actually doing it is a bit of a grind (har!) but I really value a narrative like this that's brief but I didn't feel like I missed steps along the way.

For cutting castings off of sprues, I’m thinking a fine-tooth blade in a Sawzall might be a good way to go.

Hi, new subscriber here, you do some great stuff. Where did you get the furnace from? It looks great! I've been trying with a KoR style bucket and weedburner but it doesn't seem to get hot enough, even tho my crucible starts to glow where the flame hits it, the cans don't melt :(

Hi James - thanks for the support! The aluminium casting set up was actually something we were using from my old work. Unfortunately we don’t have access to this any longer since I moved jobs. There are definitely ways you can do this at home - check out some diy casting set ups on KZread. Good luck!
Nice one! They look great and a cool idea with the numbering too, I didn't get chance to make up any coins but I'd love to sticker swap with you!👍😁

What kind of cut off wheel do you use? Specifically the kind that cuts off the back runners from the coin? It is very thin

The best part of aluminum coins is they wont rust. Maybe some archaeologist will think youre a king in 10 000 years lol

You should make yourselves some aluminium molds for injection casting HDPE as well as just melting HDPE into and pressing with the bottlejack

@@BrothersMake I don't currently have the materials to go about sand casting but I've considered carving aluminium blank sheets/blocks to press and melt HDPE in to make forms and maybe even just textures. It's likely going to be a combination of using my jewellery gravers and my flexshaft dremel. I may also experiment with cutting out forms in the sheet with my jewelers hand saw and try to solder another sheet as a backplate to it so it's like a regular mold. Although I have no experience soldering aluminium... only: Brass, bronze, copper, silver and gold.
@BrothersMake

Soldering aluminium can be tricky. TIG welding is your best bet if your going for strength. But TIG is a little harder to achieve on a DIY setup
I would like to do this with my laser engraver but don't know where to start.
Those failed have more character.

The sand you use for the mould is it a special mix of sand. Or did you steal it from Matt's kids sand pit?
