One thing that was very ridiculous was that they were told to find love in the Empirial army- which directly contradicts what Kora says in the beginning about having love beat out of her and seeing love as a weakness 😅. I was like wtf?

I thought that actually made sense. I think Kora says that soldiers were encouraged to have lovers so that they would fight for each other even if they didn't believe in the mission of the army as a whole. Her experience with romance is it being used as a tool by the rulers to manipulate soldiers to fight endless wars of conquest. This isn't explained, but I assume she figures out the duplicity at some point and has a very cynical view on love after that which is why she's distant during the events of the movie. It reminded me of Brave New World and was one of the cool pieces of worldbuilding that unfortunately gets buried under the plot, dialogue, and character issues of the movie.

@@cochonkg I like your premise but that’s not what was said in the dialogue or what they were implying in the scene. It’s one thing to say we were taught to use love as a weapon and i became disillusioned with it- but she said they were taught love was a weakness and it was beat out of her so she didn’t know how to love. Two very different things. I applaud your reach though, wish they would have leaned more towards what you’re saying.

Not to mention Kora trusts him so easily despite it being strongly suggested that the reason she's out there in the first place is that the man who raised her after killing her whole family, used her in a plot to murder the emperor and his daughter in a power grab and intended to throw her under the bus.

  • @What.99
    @What.995 ай бұрын

I thought it was funny how Kai knows where all these rebels and people that the Empire placed extremely high bounties on are, but he does nothing with that knowledge until he sees Kora in the bar. Like, he’s clearly fine with selling out people for financial gain, but yeah it totally makes sense that this guy would totally just sit on his knowledge of valued targets that the Empire would pay handsomely for information on, and just wait until some high-valued target stumbles into him instead. Also, I found it interesting that it shows Nemesis cutting off Spider-Lady’s legs, yet every time it showed a widescreen of her/it, she/it has all her/its limbs still. The same thing happened with Ajax when he was fighting Kora on the platform. Kora hits Ajax, and they make a point of showing (in slow motion, btw) multiple teeth getting knocked out of his mouth and off the platform. After he gets thrown off the platform and falls hundreds of feet, a ship shows up and just instantly knows where his body was. Looked pretty good for a guy that fell hundreds of feet. Anyway, when they load him onto the gurney, you see that Ajax still has all of his teeth, which you see again when he talks to low-budget Emperor Palpatine. It was like Zack Snyder kept forgetting what happened seconds earlier in the movie, and didn’t bother to go back and check to make sure the continuity was intact.

The thing is - once the bad soldiers in the village were killed, they didn't have to look for mercenaries anymore. The reason the were looking for mercenaries to defend the village was because they feared they would be wiped out. However, with them dead and having another 9 weeks before the rest come back - they could have easily migrated off to other planets available in that galaxy and simply got themselves absorbed into society since no soldier actually remembers who they are. I mean Kora and her companion were planet hopping with ease all over the galaxy. There is no reason for the villagers to stay and risk their lives fighting alongside mercs. If there was an in-movie reason why they should stay, then fine but none was ever given. Galaxy travel was available but yet they chose to stay and hope they can get mercs to save their collective asses. That's a huge plothole.

17:30 The whole lovers-in-battle thing is a lift from the actual historical unit the Sacred Band of Thebes. According to some ancient Greek claims, 150 pairs of male lovers were formed the elite force of the Theban army in the 4th century BC, ending Spartan domination. The idea is that you fight harder for your lover than your colleague.

Yes! It really felt like one of the writers came across an article of that and thought it was cool and added it without checking their own continuity. The Sacred Band rightly fascinated the people of the Mediterranean, and if this was an attempt to invoke them, then that might be this movie's greatest sin. (Seriously, reading up on ancient Sparta makes the Sacred Band's defeat of them all the more captivating - not because the Spartans were such formidable opponents (they weren't), but because they represented almost perfectly opposite philosophies. The Sacred Band was united by love, trust, and camaraderie. The Spartans weren't so much united as _shackled_ - by the institutional horrors of their society, by the fear of having their entire bloodline purged from the annals and enslaved if they were deemed unmanly, by the desperate need to believe they were supermen because only that could justify what had been done to them in the name of that goal. Sparta was a nation of fear directed both inward and outward. When their warriors met an enemy who wasn't afraid of them, wasn't afraid of death, and _would not break,_ they ultimately broke upon the Sacred Bands' shieldwall like water against the shore. It's one of those rare moments where RL history decided to take a Tolkienian turn.

I get that you guys interrupt each other, but the space to allow more time to flesh out each viewpoint still with some interruptions feels and flows better. The key seems to be circling back to whomever was interrupted, where before that circling back didn’t happen as frequently.

The whole closing fight scene is where I wished Snyder made Kai a double agent instead of a double crosser cos, let's face it, there was no way a grounded army was going to succeed against an airborne dreadnought. The way this movie played out, they could've tweaked it so that, instead of Kai double crossing Kora and company, he just used them as bait to draw in Admiral Noble close enough so they could take him out up close. A “director’s cut” is expected, but I cannot fathom why the definitive cut was not the one on streaming. A theatrical cut is tethered by its runtime, but it could be episodical online as this cut feels like. It feels too episodical, as if it was conceived as a miniseries but forced to be clumsily put together as a two-part movie. I like Snyder’s flicks more than most but this “half of a movie” might only be fun if you turn your brain off… or set it in an “ultra slow motion mode”.

I think I can fathom it. Why? I think back to Quentin Tarantino's the hateful eight. Did you know that both versions are on Netflix as we speak? Both being the theatrical cut and the extended episodic cut? Now, how much do you want to bet that the latter version got more views and support?. But here's the kicker: it had to happen after the original was posted. In the end, Netflix gets what it wants from people viewing the original, with lots of views and then viewing the extended cut with lots of views. It's really a win-win for them. As for snyder, well personally I honestly think that ever since people took to the extended version of watchmen, he made it a point to try and make extended versions of a lot of his movies. It's just that, if he's writing it, it's not going to be nearly as good...

The Creature, World, and Atmosphere designs were done well to a certain point. I like the blaster designs and I still think the size of Kora’s Sidearm is just too gratuitous in size even with the big ass holster it’s in too but I still like how stylized it was in terms of design and decals. And I’ll admit, somewhere deep down I knew Charlie Hunnam’s character Kai would betray the group, but I thought it’ll be like a tricking both sides to side with the heroes but no. The man just decided to stay bad and I’ll admit, as much as that caught me off guard, I actually liked the twist of him actually being a total asshole and I maybe found a little relief in his death. But one thing I’m upset about is Ray Fisher. He got to work with Zack Snyder again but he’s in the film for like the last 10 minutes and he dies. Ray Fisher deserves better man. I also loved Anthony Hopkins as Jimmy and it actually took me a while to find out it was Hopkins voicing him.

Watched it a couple of hours ago. I'm normally pretty easy going with sci fi as I find the worldbuilding as interesting as the actual plot but it was just all over the place. I still don't understand the world or care for anyone in it. From memory there's a warhammer style empire, but we learned next to nothing about it. There's a viking farming village for some reason which has orgies in the hopes that it convinces the gods to make their plants grow, since they've decided the only modern technology they're going to use are automatic doors, and that's an overnight hike from a western style town with a space port and a load of aliens which where never explained or expanded on so fuck knows if they're part of the empire, have civilisations outside the empire or fought the empire, and of course there's an Irish guy. There was a cyber punk city where Asian people use swords for honor because we've not moved on from that cliche, and spider women who apparently used to own the planet and so kidnap children, no need to expand on that. A roman colleseum, don't know what the fuck that was about, but i expected to see Russell Crowe wandering around in the background and then at some point conan the barbarian went to an American ranch at hogwarts to train a hippogriff using a slow motion spell or something, I think I zoned out at that part. Then the technology was all over the place too. The blasters couldn't shoot through a wooden table. A space gunship apparently used plate glass windows to protect its gunners who for some reason also controll the whole ship. There's old earth cultures died around with no synergy using a bizarre smattering of technology, but not for important tasks. A lone smuggler can apparently get a private ship, but an entire village that supplies the food to the moon can't. There's a ranch training a hippogriff for some unknown reason who had a prisoner price working as a blacksmith. Like what the fuck is going on. I'm all for a blending of technology and frontier type lifestyle, the empire stuff had some potential, a viking theme sci fi could be a cool concept, a cyberpunk or neo sci fi is always cool, and the story of these combat robots who where imperial guards but turned to pacifism when the emperor and his daughter where assassinated was a fascinating concept, but pick a bloody lane. It was like a bunch of short stories but none of them had any conclusion or cohesion.

ok joe I'm enjoying the discussion but there's one thing you kinda misunderstood. Kora asked the bloodaxes to help them fight. the leader Ray Fisher's character's sister was rude and brushed them off. Kora got annoyed because she said the only reason they're in this mess is because the bloodaxes did an illegal business deal with gunna which put's them on Noble's radar. this explains why noble went to the farm in the first place. not JUST because they needed farmers to provide food but to punish them for helping the bloodaxes. Gunna then explains how the rebellion they are trying to start is just like how the bloodaxes started off in their early days. this resunates with Darrian bloodaxe and he choose to go fight with them to live by his ideals that he preaches and because he sympathizes with them cuz they reminded him of how he started out and he also felt bad for putting them in the situation in the first place

I was enjoying it up until the barn scene, that’s when I first started to get worried. It felt like the scene from Star Wars when all the guards are stood waiting for their turn. The robot was great! Far more interested in where his story will go. The crew left like hire people on mass effect and just never interacted with them and they are just sat around the ship waiting for the final level. And ow my what a final level it was :|

I've tried to watch it, it's like AI tried to write 'Battle beyond the stars', it's god awful, and his obsession with slow mo is embarrassing, even using it to highlight crappy moves in lacklustre fights, of which there are far too many. There is so much exposition, I think it would take less time to read a novel! It just leaves me dry and doesn't give time for characters to develop before moving on to the next bit.

That girl who shows kindness to the robot is absolutely going to turn out to be the young princess who brought the bird back to life. She must have been helped to sneak away when the rest of the royal family was destroyed. In that respect, she's basically Luke Skywalker, blending in with the farming community.

  • @WhatsTheTakeaway

@drawnhere Sure that's possible, but it was supposedly a very traumatic event for the Mother world. I would think the bodyguard of the princess would recognize her a few years older. Also, I would think the grapey soldiers would recognize their beloved princess. Now, some caveats. Maybe Kora is a bad bodyguard. Maybe the princess had her appearance altered. Maybe Kora knows it's the princess but doesn't let on, and perhaps the soldiers are new and never saw the princess (this seems unlikely due to the aforementioned national trauma). I personally think Jimmy is moved by the girl's care and concern, which he disregards his "programming" and fights to save the Rebel Moon.

Does the village even need defending at the end of the film? The bad guys immediately lose interest in the village and want to capture Kora and her motley crew instead. But Kora still thinks the bad guys care and goes back to the village to endanger it. Admittedly the bad guys would probably lean heavily on the village to draw her out and there is still one more Bloodaxe out there but their priorities change once they find out who Kora is. 12,000 bushels just doesn’t seem important to them anymore.
