Please don't fear making long videos. I happily watched from beginning to end and I'm sure many others did too. Complicated topics need to be given ample time to do the topic justice otherwise one just does a disservice to what one is trying to achieve. As long as you're engaged with the topic and you are. Then viewer isn't going to mind length. Anyway just my two cents worth. I think it would be a shame to further edit this. Thank you and God Bless.

That is because they aren't taught all of this. I know what I do about the RC beliefs because my parents taught and because I sought the information out. I look at what my children learn in their catechism classes and it is joke. All I can think is why? I'm a cradle Catholic and well very Catholic, my biggest problem with the catholic church is that we don't actually teach out beliefs and where they come from to children that don't attend a catholic school.

I agree! It should be remembered that the church was already functioning, presumably, even before the emergence of the HOLY scriptures through the directions by the apostles. Hence, it is logical to believe that the early church's practices which became customs and/or traditions should be given consideration along side with the written words of God.

The video was better than expected, I was semi-expecting a lot of cheap shots (not because of you) but I guess I have been exposed to lots of bad arguments (Protestant or Catholic). I find navigating these matters very difficult, I guess the only way to resolve this is to take my time and study these matters myself. Still then it will be very difficult. I'm almost confirmed (will be confirmed this easter), but it's an incredibly bumpy road. There are lots of difficulties on the way, and my conscious is greatly divided at times. One day I absolutely love the faith, and the other day I strongly doubt the faith and wish to cancel being confirmed. Anyway I'll do my best to keep you in my prayers! The first two comments are most interesting I think, the last few lines are just meant to share some ideas that popped into my head and not be viewed as an argument. 1:04:15 You're saying that the data pool from which we pull doctrin is skewed if we don't have an infallible magisterium defining the canon. Bu how so? There's no "meta-magisterium" to determine whether there is a magisterium. But apparently we'd need something like that to make sure our theological verdicts don't go wrong? It seems to me this argument is "too big" and eventually gives all of Christendom problems. The exact issues you raise at 1:06:00 can also be raised against a magisterium, councils etc. Also, I don't see how you can consistently use Scriptural arguments for the magisterium, if you think we need the magisterium to set the boundaries of Scripture. It seems like you must show that the RC magisterium is true from history and a priori arguments alone. Some examples from your video: "In Protestantism none of these debates can ever be settled for it is all left up to the individual to decide on the validity of the doctrine before joining a church." (1:36:24) I think it would be more correct to say "Christianity", not "Protestantism". For isn't it by weighing the evidence you decided to join the RCC? It's up to you (and me) to decide whether the papal claims are true. Again, Protestantism, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy and Oriental Orthodoxy all have to figure this out. "The secondary authorities in these classical Protestant traditions only settle the debate for those who have already agreed on the doctrinal system" (1:37:24). But this is close to how the Roman Catholic Church works. You must already have agreed on the system of *authority* from Scripture, tradition and a priori arguments - and you are the judge! Only then can you trust the judgment of the magisterium (and your trust shouldn't extend your level of certainty in your confidence in the truth of the RCC authority claims). "so the confessions don't resolve the debate. They are an identifying mark of which side of the debate you chose to agree with." (1:37:45). Exactly *this*! But this is exactly why it's very difficult to take the RCC (or EO/OO) claims of the need for settling the debate without an infallible magisterium seriously - it only solves the issues if you already agree with the system. But we have to weigh the evidence to get there. Are you aware of the Lutheran approach to the canon? Interestingly, the Book of Concord has no canon list. We don't view the contents of the canon as a theological but historical question. And we also take into account that some texts were difficult to canonize, so we distinguish between the antilegomena and homologoumena, so we should not hold to doctrines that are in antilegomena only, but the antilegomena may deepen our understanding of what we see in the homologoumena. In this way, the Lutherans try and take seriously the sometimes messy historical process of canonization in forming our theology. Also, you give some examples of "the word of God" being used referring to oral preaching/teaching. Maybe you're already aware, but this is not uniquely a Roman Catholic datapoint - it's very much a natural way of speaking for Lutherans, that we "preach/teach the word of God" (and we don't just mean expository preaching, but preaching Christ more broadly speaking. 1:21:30 On the category of Orthodoxy in forming the canon: If we distinguish between those texts that are very easy to determine as canonical and those that are more difficult, we start recognizing the easy ones and then compare the other texts to the easily recognized texts. I enjoyed the video a lot! I don't hope I've come across as harsh - I'm very much interested in the ecumenical dialogues and have studied the RCC to some extend recently.

Sola Scriptura is incoherent because the Church was established with the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost, when the New Testament scriptures were not yet written. It is through the guidance of the Spirit that the Church and her authority worked among the Apostles and their fellow workers to write down the Gospels and sacred letters as God's words, and animated the Church to keep the true writings from the false ones. The Spirit breathed Authority to the Apostles and to their successors the Bishops, and this Authority manifested Sacred Tradition and the canon Scripture. "It is clear, therefore, that sacred tradition, Sacred Scripture and the teaching authority of the Church, in accord with God's most wise design, are so linked and joined together that one cannot stand without the others, and that all together and each in its own way under the action of the one Holy Spirit contribute effectively to the salvation of souls." Lutheranism teaches that Scriptures are final authority, but that tradition is authoritative. RC apologists tend to just address modern evangelical errors rather than what was presented during the reformation. The main issue of why I left Rome is because they historically have contradicted themselves, even to this day, and there are beliefs that contradict the Scriptures. Confessional Lutheranism has the better view without sacrificing tradition and the sacraments.

There are at least a couple of things that Christians firmly adhere to that are not in Scripture, but are known by Tradition. One is Sunday worship! The NT never says Christians should worship on Sunday. Now, it is hinted at as the Lord's Day, and the first day of the week, but never directly. Seventh Day Adventists know about these verses, but are able to argue them away. Another is that Jesus died on a cross. If Jehovah's Witnesses are correct, the word stauros that is usually translated cross, doesn't mean that at all, but simply some kind of upright stake. This all means that Christians are much more dependent on Tradition than we care to admit!

I tried EEM (Eastern European Mission) but that was of no use, even after 3 months of waiting. I live in Russia and would like to improve my English with the help of the Book. Also, it would be good to get a copy in French hut it seems to be impossible...

I'm adding this comment with the intro paused, so I'm going to look quite stupid if this is addressed in the video. The claim of Sola Scriptura is inherently paradoxical: if Scripture is the sole infallible authority, and Scripture does not claim to be the sole infallible authority, then that claim is made by an entity without infallible authority, so it could be a fallible claim. Additionally, if the Church does not have infallible authority, then the Church cannot be infallible in any of her decisions, including the Council of Rome's declaration of Canon. This means that the Canon has a non-zero chance of being wrong, having either too many or too few books. If too few, there are books out there with the same authority as Scripture, meaning Scripture cannot be the sole infallible authority. If too many, there are some books within Scripture that are not infallible, meaning Scripture is not an infallible authority. Therefore, if Scripture is the sole infallible authority, Scripture is not the sole infallible authority, hence the paradox.

The books of the New Testament were written before AD 382, and so were a lot of other Christian writings as well. But, the problem was, which writings were which? Of course, some writings were known from the beginning who wrote them, such as Paul's epistles. But other writings were anonymous, such as the Gospels and Hebrews. It is still unknown who wrote Hebrews, but we have the Sacred Tradition in the Catholic Church to tell us that Matthew, Mark, Luke and John wrote the Gospels. It is true, then, that as a recognized list, canon, the New Testament as we know it didn't exist until AD 382. And the NT certainly wasn't all under one cover, but was a disparate collection of scrolls in the earliest days.

It seems to me that categorizing "Scripture" as separate from Tradition is not the best way to think about the Bible. Any time "the Scriptures" are mentioned in the Gospels refers to the Old Testament. It cannot refer to what we call "the Bible" because the New Testament had yet to be written during the life of Jesus. Statements about the authority of "the Scriptures," therefore cannot refer to anything in the New Testament, except by extension of the term after the fact. Therefore there is no "Scripture and Tradition," there is *only* Tradition, of which the Torah, the Prophets, Old Testament poetry and wisdom books, the Gospels, the Epistles, and the Apocalypse of St. John, collectively "the Bible," is a part. Even calling the Bible "the Word of God" is only by analogy because the Word of God, the Logos, is Christ Himself. It is true that the Church is both temporally and ontologically prior to the Bible, but what is more is that the Bible exists *for the Church,* and only in the context of the Church can the contents of the Bible be properly understood. Why do we have the New Testament in the first place? We have it because the Apostles were getting martyred and it seemed that Jesus' return might not actually be within that generation; the authentic teaching of the Apostles, which they received from Jesus, therefore, needed to be preserved. Consider that the Epistles were written because, even in the time of the Apostles, Christians were going astray and St. Paul needed to set them straight. Since he couldn't be everywhere, he wrote letters to the various churches to do so. We have the Gospels because we wanted the testimony of eyewitnesses to Jesus' life, teachings, Crucifixion and Resurrection for the same reason why we have rules of evidence that exclude hearsay. From the beginning, therefore, the collection of documents that we consider the New Testament existed for the Church as a tool to be used within herself. Separating "Scripture" from "Tradition" as though it were something different is why we get Sola Scriptura in the first place. It is this division of Scripture and Tradition that opens the door to people thinking that the Bible is a manual for DIY Christianity. The proponents of Sola Scriptura might say, "Sure, someone could watch the KZread video ("Tradition") but it is unnecessary because it is only there for people who can't be bothered to read the manual." They can think this way only because we categorize the Bible as something that can be separated from, or used as another authority to, the Church.

I haven't gotten through the whole video yet, but I do want to make one objection and forgive me if you adress it latter. Im not sure where you get the idea that Protestants do not believe that the apostles oral teaching was also authoritative, I for one certainly do. Ill include some quotes from Martin Chemnitz commenting on 2 Thesselonians 2:15 where he talks about this, "A man of God who holds to Paul's traditions is complete in his ministry ect and he who holds the divinely inspired scripture is complete in his ministry because it is the same doctrine which at first was transmitted by word of mouth and later comprehended in writings" examination of the council of trent book I pg 139 "It is undeniably the teuest of axioms that that alome is true doctrine which the apostles transmited and which the church recived from the apostles. But the question is rather that doctrine is another and diffrent from that which is comprehended in scripture" examination of the council of trent vol I page 225 The real disagreement is not over rather or not the apostles oral teaching was authoritative, it was. The question is rather or not the apostles taught anything that was not also taught in scripture. This is important becuse when Irrenaus for instance cites the tradition of the apostles he is usually talking about things that are also contained in writing in the scriptures. I hope this helps to clarify the protestant position a bit, its possible not all prots will agree with chemnitz also but I thought id bring it up.

Your reference to people hearing God's Word from Paul, you know I've thought about this. I think when we become born again Christians and get the same spirit dwelling within us, we do transmit the true message with our own speech. When you hear a Christian speak, in a way, you're hearing the word of God in the same way that Paul spoke. Maybe that's what it means. So I guess I would say this would apply to any born again Christian speaking truth, not simply the people at the top of a certain organization.

'He' and 'His' referring to Christ. Catholics changed it to (Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; She shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise Her heel.") 'She' and 'Her' refers to Mary. 22. Catholic Church use Rev 12 to refer to Mary as 'queen of heaven', when Rev 12:6 clearly refers to Israel escaping the Great Tribulation. Mary cannot be alive to escape the Great Tribulation. 23. Catholic Church refers to Mary as 'Queen of heaven', but 'Queen of Mary' in the Bible is a demonic entity Astoreth or Ishtar, the female deity partner of Baal. 5 verses in Jeremiah as proof.24. Catholic church refers to Mary as the Mediatress, Co redemptress, helper of Christ, firstborn of all creation .. Mary cannot be the mediatress. Jesus is the one and only Mediator between God and man. Only Jesus redeems. Only the Holy Spirit is the Helper sent by Jesus. Only Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. 25. Roman Catholicism has “saints” one can pray to in order to gain a particular blessing. For example, Saint Gianna Beretta Molla is the patron saint of fertility. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals. There are multiple patron saints of healing and comfort. Nowhere is even a hint of this taught in Scripture. Just as the Roman pantheon of gods had a god of love, a god of peace, a god of war, a god of strength, a god of wisdom, etc., so the Catholic Church has a saint who is “in charge” over each of these and many other categories. Many Roman cities had a god specific to the city, and the Catholic Church provided “patron saints” for cities as well.26. Mary is called the gate of heaven? Mary has keys to paradise? Here are roman pagan teachers saying their man made goddess is their savior. None of these quotes have been denounced, on the contrary they are cited. "Open to us, O Mary, the gate of Paradise, since you have its keys! " St. Ambrose "God has entrusted the keys and treasures of Heaven to Mary." St. Thomas Aquinas "No one can enter into Heaven except through Mary, as entering through a gate. " St. Bonaventure "Mary is called "The Gate of Heaven" because no one can enter Heaven but through her means." St. Alphonsus Maria Liguori Papal infallibility Immaculate Mary Assumption of Mary Perpetual Virgin Mary as Mother of God, co mediatrix, co redemptrix, new ark of covenant, Pope as vicar, Holy Water, papacy, peter as first pope, papal succession, apostolic succession, indulgences, 7 sacraments, rosary veneration of saints and statues celibacy of priesthood canonization of saints limbo

All those books do not have contradiction, and there is no debate about it. If anyone tried to add a different book to the canon, that wouldn't be possible because it would contradict all other books.
