Great video, Oscar. I’ve used Reason since v1. Still using it every day and I’ve found the oldest devices still hold up well. Most of my tracks start off with beats ideas in Redrum and Subtractor is still great as a quick way of getting a new sound idea down. I don’t use the half rack effects though, they were fine 20 years ago but the newer equivalents blow them away, especially The Echo.

Hi Oscar, very nice overview! I'm a longtime Reason user, so this time I didn't watch it out ;-) But I think it's good to get people acquainted with this wonderful environment! Personally, I would have categorized Grain as a Granular Synth, but I have to admit it has both aspects built in...

Reason is fantastic, been dabbling with it for years now. I especially make use of the Red Drum sequencer and love the randomize feature. In Logic the randomize key board short cut does not seem to work, one has to right click or option click as the case may be which is not great for flow. I normally get a headache before I actually finish a piece however. Still fun for the whole family. Thx for making this, there is still so much to learn and this helps as a great compact overview. I have just started using Reason Rack as a VST inside Logic Audio. Most of the time i just feel like playing guitar and/or keys and find that i can quickly make unique and interesting rhythmic accompaniment using Reason. It's also capable of extreme blippyness, great tool for making psydub tracks also. Battery is great within Logic also for making drum parts, i use that always for that more organic drum feel, with no quantize but just play like afrobeat and also trigger samples from old movies and docs. For effects i mainly use guitar rig as it's the most complete effects package i know and it has some effect i love playing with AND the space echo reverb is amazing. Keep up the great work! You should take in depth looks at each component also AND make some recordings and get a hit with a bullet, which will feedback into growing your channel even more. You probably are or have done that already right, i'll have to take a look at your back catalog. For now it's a great morning just to hook up the PA and play for a bit, my daily meditation, it's deep man 🎷📡🛸

Solid Video Oscar!!! I've had Reason+ for a while and it rocks. First used Reason when I cracked 2.5 with keygens in grade 9 and it has come a long way. If anyone ever finds a super scratched burned cd with 9 tracks of the worlds most awful music on it, I would very much like to have it back

Not to make the effect section even more overwhelming, there's also the insert components in other devices that can be used as standalone effects (eg Kong, Thor) and the individual parts of things like Synchronous or Alligator.

Hi @ReasonStudios @OscarUnderdog, this was great but what I NEED (NEED need) as a video mapping tasks to device options and even better, famous plugins to Reason options. Like transient shaping: do I need Cableguys Shaperbox or can Synchronous and some other Effects do the same thing? What about creating envelopes followers that I send out as CV to other FX? Reverse reverbs (not one where you bounce and reverse but when the reverb tail gets louder instead of quieter). I think a tour of less than totally common but still common techniques mapped to their reason FX or combinations would be super useful. I have a feeling I don't have to buy anything because I can probably build it in a Combinator, but I would like a little more guidance from you in how to match the other popular FX plugins out there.

I’ve used Reason inside ProTools in rewire mode since 2003 until It no longer was Rewire able. Now using it as a VST in Ableton. I love the Matrix! I own the full version, but also subscribed to Reason Plus to get tot try some beat generators. I’m canceling the Plus subscription. Don’t need the beat generators but still love all the synths and effects.

These kids today don't even know. And "ID-8" is "ideate" because it is designed for coming up with your basic ideas. Pretty sure NN-XT is just "n-n-next" because it was the follow-up to the NN-19.

Also, don't know if you covered it later, but.. You should also look at using the device effects inside reason. Like you can use the Thor formant filter, or so on by feeding anything else into it.

  • @julianmorrisco

Having been using Reason since 2000, and Rebirth-388 before that - NN19 was a play on the song ‘Nineteen’ which used a then new Akai sampler to replay spoken samples about the Vietnam War. By Paul Hardcastle. It was huge at the time and the phrase ‘nineteen’ was chopped into N-n-n-nineteen. Which was fairly novel st the time, think about that! The NN19 is loosely based on the Akai, down to the colour. I never had one, my first sampler was a Mirage although I used Emulators and CMIs at work. All the other arcane names for older modules usually have a reference like this. I won’t go into some others I know, maybe it would be a fun topic for a video to briefly go through the history? You do you, of course. I tend to use the acoustic rock instruments these days and find Reason astonishingly fast to start pieces and now I just stay in Reason. I don’t work in a studio anymore so haven’t updated Pro Tools, Cubase, Ableton or my UA plugins amongst others for years. Reason can do it all and as an old bugger who spent the first 20 years in audio and music chasing my tail for the latest and greatest synth, FX, guitar modelling whatever. The quality of the stuff in Reason is easily good enough, at least, and often as good as anything. I have a 25 year old mic cabinet, a couple of nice preamps, a Les Paul and a PBass. Some genelec monitors ans an RME interface from maybe 12 years ago. And that’s all I need.

Hi Oscar, excellent and much needed (by me) overview of Reason's assets. I am such a neophyte that I used this video as a learning tool. I hit two snags though, the first was Pulsar LFO 2, I could not find it among the Effects. The other was the MIDI Out asset, it was not among my Utilities. Could you please confirm that they should be among the Effects and Utilities. I would appreciate it.

    1. Look for the search box at the top of any KZread page. 2. Type the name of the device you wish to know more about into the search box. 3. Hit the "Enter" key on your computer keyboard. 4. Watch a video from the search results on the next screen. It's complicated, but I hope I helped a little. Good luck!
