Really Weird Rules The Royals Have About Food

Ойын-сауық

The life of a British royal may seem frivolous as their former power has given way to duties more figurehead than “off with her head."
However, even something as seemingly innocuous as a state dinner can be the cause of stress and worry. The royals have a litany of weird rules that could quickly turn a simple fork choice into a massive faux pas. From mealtime conversation flow to how a single purse could end a meal, here’s everything you need to know about dining with the Queen.

I understand that it may not be possible for many to lead disciplined lives with some basic etiquette and rules. That's true everywhere, around the world. Nobody is asking you to copy anything. If you want to learn to lead a better life, you should be willing to learn from the finest rather than commenting on others' eho may be waaaay higher than you in many ways. That's all I meant.

This is true. I’m British and many of these basics were taught as a child, both at home and school. Now that I’m older I’ve learned how to use chopsticks or to eat certain foods with my hand (Indian and African foods, for instance.) I try to eat as the people of the country where the food comes from do. The foods often taste best that way.

It’s also just comfortable and much less messy to eat this way but that’s just my opinion. Everyone should eat whichever way they feel most comfortable doing so.

None of these “rules” are “weird” at all. They’re conventional formal table manners, except the secret purse signal. I’m an American commoner but I know all of them. (They were part of the table manners Girl Scout badge 😂) Of course I don’t follow them when eating with friends and family but at a formal business dinner, absolutely. those cutlery rules actually make sense, if you eat with your weak hand with the fork, and the strong one with the knife, you have to physically bring yourself above your plate, so if you spill, the food doesn't soil the table cloth. The fork and knife crossed is a way of making anything left of them, also not dropped to cloth. All and all, for the sake of sanitation, I might actually adopt some of these in order to cut down on my cleaning time.

The etiquette described in the video actually does not even cover half the story regarding table manners. For example, before taking a sip from your glass you should use the napkin to not leave food bits or grease on the edge of the glass.

THANKS! This video brought up some fun memories from my childhood. I was taught most of the first customs (with the exception of the queens purse rule) in school in Kansas. We had a one month manners class in 6th grade. Our freaky art/music teacher taught this as part of her curriculum. It was the first time I made a D. We had a stupid after school program where she was making students sing New Kids on the Block songs. A few of us thought the N.K.O.T.B. were douche bags and refused to sing at the practices and I skipped the program. She announced that anyone who refused to degrade and shame themselves would receive D grade or lower. It was kind of a big deal at the time. My Mom was going to make me go but my Dad actually stepped in and allowed me to make my own decision. I was then grounded for the D. How long I can't remember now but it was damn sure worth it!!

I STILL appreciate the attempts and traditions made by a few members of the family to treat the public with respect. Although it's kind to think that we're beyond the Victorian class system, it's still going strong today in people's attitudes and manners. I'm glad a few of them are deciding to keep being respectful to all of their 'vassals'. And not out of pity, or because the people with money and status annoy them. I've always hoped that the Royals would do right by their kingdom, and treat us with respect. Even though the disparity between wealth and respect towards others, regardless of background and income, is STILL a terrible problem, I hope that they continue to set a good example for everyone. At the very least, everyone is expecting to show good manners and respect to all, and I hope that will be passed on.

Most wait staff don't seem to understand that crossed utensils on your plate means you're not finished eating and utensils placed side by side indicates you have finished. If everyone when eating out followed this simple etiquette it would make the wait staffs job a lot easier, I constantly tell younger people when they ask me if I'm done with my meal about this indicator on my plate and they always say" oh ok I didn't know that" and a lot say how that makes things easier.

I use it most of the time myself, but have never quite mastered putting food on the back of the fork. There are certain tricks to it, I guess. There's also an "American fine dining" and an "Oriental fine dining" practice as well.

Isaac Spencer of course there are exceptions and people didn’t have a lot around/after wartime.. but it’s still not a pudding like Christmas Pudding. Nobody, much less the Queen and Royal family, would be handing out Yorkshire Puddings at Christmas.. I’m afraid this is a bad edit job by people who looked up Pudding and found a nice looking clip without having the foggiest idea what the food was, only that it was a “pudding”. Granted it doesn’t help we Brits colloquially use the term pudding and dessert interchangeably, but if a channel is going to do a video about a topic they should do their research first, including the visual clips they use to aid the audible information.
