Reality Check in Aberdeen, WA

Ойын-сауық

On our way back from Olympic National Park, we stopped at Breakwater Seafood in Aberdeen, Washington. In addition to a delicious meal, I got a cold dose of economic inequality. Several fellow customers arrived in luxury cars, and one family outside was living in there non-luxury SUV.
Doing the math on an old Chevy Suburban vs. new Porsche Cayennes was somehow way easier than recognizing the different values we put on people in society.
It inspired me to support the Union Gospel Mission of Grays Harbor County. And you should too.

I was born in Aberdeen, been living here for 17 years and it has been this way since i can remember. It is full of tweakers and homeless and no matter where you go you will see some sad shit. Homeless sleeping in the rain every night, people on whatever drug you can think of screaming at power poles thinking its a person who owes them money. Its shitty I wish shit could get better here

Everyone wants things to get BETTER. But that usually means sweeping them out of town or under the carpets to present a better "Image" to the world. Why is this? Because the very same folks that complain the most are the one who refuse to PAY for the needed changes to make thing BETTER for everyone. NOT just push them out on the fringes so I can feel good about going to lunch. (Not that you are. You at least made a donation to an organization TRYING to help.) Its the REST of "society" that wants the problem to just "go away" and not be dealt with PROPERLY. Because that might cost them money...and we cant have those that CAN paying to help those that CANNOT.( There are sadly those who WONT...but that is a seperate issue.) Now this IS a NATIONWIDE issue...not just Aberdeen...and the root causes and solutions are the same nationwide as well. But until we get a Government that CARES about the PEOPLE and not just their pocketbooks there will never an effective solution. And for reference..I HAVE been there....living out of my vehicle..scraping by. It is HARD as hell to BOOTSTRAP yourself up from there....I've had to do it TWICE in my lifetime so far. So yes..I have ROOM to TALK and put the blame where it belongs....at least in my opinion.

This video was not what I expected but in the best way possible. I grew up in grays harbor mostly Aberdeen and this place is so interesting. I watched the lumber industry at its peak and the fall of the lumber industry in grays harbor. I've worked as a professional mover in grays harbor for almost ten years now and the range of people is much different than anywhere else I've ever been. Some people have money from family who have worked hard over generations to amount that wealth, wether it be logging or a family owned business. While some are new families with money seeking somewhere new and "up and coming" because once the logging almost went extinct around here all grays harbor had to fall back on was tourism and real estate. And some have either been unfortunate to have a less than perfect unbringing ( to say the least) or found their way into drugs. Anymore it seems that older people are moving closer to hospitals and medical care (Olympia) while younger couples are being drawn to the beaches ( ocean shores, pacific beach, Westport) which I believe has triggered a huge culture shift from hard working people and hard earned money that started here, to people looking for a new undiscovered oasis. Sorry for the long comment I just thought it might shed some light onto why there is such a contrast in lifestyles or personalities here

I really appreciate the thoughtful reply, man. Good insight on the generational change. Sometimes places get a reputation based on how they were for a while, and it can take decades for that to change. Say 10 years ago, a cousin invited me to meet her at a restaurant in the Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma. I was like, isn't that the most famously crime-ridden neighborhood in Washington? As it turned out the joint was great start up in an affordable place. Now, the whole area is booming economically -- for better for some, for worse for folks pushed out. I think Aberdeen may be on a similar course . The folks who had to get out for lack of opportunity probably have already packed up. Now you have a whole new generation moving in with no reference to the Aberdeen of the 1990s.

Another sad reality is that the housing market for buying and renting has shot up since covid hit. We had some pretty low numbers when it came to cases and deaths and a lot of the people from the bigger cities like Seattle came down here looking to buy and rent to get away. Not to mention over the last 5 years that has been happening anyways, but with vacation homes to be closer to the beaches. Aberdeen has been jumping around to #5 and #9 of the top growing real estate areas in the US. And as someone who has lived here my whole life it's nice we are finally up and coming but the prices for housing is ridiculous. Places that were one affordable for people down here shot to a completely different economic bracket because of all the big city money. An apartment I used to live in and pay 800$ a month for is now well over 1200$ a month. Not saying that 100% this is what happened to that family but it's a sad reality everyone living and growing up here is having to face. Most of us cant even afford to live in our hometown anymore.

I was a resident at the Aberdeen Gospel Mission for a year...lots of donations, if not most, end up in the dumpster behind the mission. I've seen barrels of fresh sandwiches get thrown out. I've seen dozens of gallons of fresh milk get thrown out...I mean 12 gallons thrown out in one day..I counted them..this happens all the time!!..it is very common!!..They say its because they dont have enough room to store it all...none of the people who eat there are allowed to take any food with them. If they get caught with so much as a cookie in their pocket, they get denied food and services for at least 30 days...library books are banned and any other outside reading material..sounds like Nazi Germany during the 1930s... There was one guy who took a library book to the mission and got caught with it.. He was kicked out... This mission is not run like a Christian homeless shelter. It is run like a cult.. You said that you recommend donating to this place???...last Christmas someone donated gifts to everyone..socks, gloves, candy, personal hygiene.... stuff like that. Rosary beads with a crucifix were included in each of the packages.. The woman who runs the mission threw the rosary beads in the garbage when she heard they were catholic in origin..she said that the Catholics are not Christians...even tho they donated gifts..it didnt matter..I wouldnt donate a thing to this place..they dont appreciate anything you do for them..I would rather help someone who needs it than donate to a pig who doesn't appreciate anything..especially when there is a better than 50% chance that the donation will be thrown in the garbage. There are two people who run this mission who need to be replaced. It is against the rules to report anything to the board of directors otherwise you will be kicked out. This is another one of their rules..

OK. NEEDING home to house folks is not the same metric as the actual empty spaces/homes to folks in need ratio. There is PLENTY of space available to house folks...but because people are greedy and own property there they bought cheap...but live elsewhere to make a "living " of the work of others it screws up the FACTUAL Figures. Because Lawd knows we can have folks helping others at little to no cost...they NEED that income to pay their mortgage in Kent...or Everett. or Wherever. And I feel that is Criminal. If you cant afford the place you live and need to screw over others just to get by...you need to GTFO of real estste and live withing your OWN means...not try and profit from anothers WORK. @@adame-hwilson150

Yes, America overall is seeing a huge spread between the poor and the rich, with the middle class being reduced. Whoa, so strange. Was looking at a job in Aberdeen, looking for some information about the town, and who do I find? Adam Wilson! Now that's a blast from 20 years ago. Anyway, some good commentary. I moved away from the northwest around 2005, and now that I am looking at returning, it is shocking to see the economic inequality. I miss the Seattle and PNW of the 90s when everyone of all walks of life (and economic statuses) seemed to mix in places like Seattle. My dad's neighborhood in south Seattle was a middle class mix of whites, asians, and African Americans with large Jewish and LGBTQ communities; some wealthy, some not. Now it is predominantly white, upper-class tech workers in million dollar homes, and large numbers of people living in RVs or tents on the street. It doesn't help to rail against change and long for the past though. I like that your experience inspired you to do something more than criticise or complain. Nice to hear from you, even through KZread.

Two things. First is, no matter what the haters say, there are good things about -- and good parts of -- Aberdeen and Hoquiam. Every town has some awesome spots, neighborhoods, blocks, etc. Second, fact is, although housing in Grays Harbor used to be amazingly lower priced than the rest of Western Washington, those days seem to be coming to an end. So, no shame at all at finding a place where you can afford it and making the best of it.

When laurel wanted to pray for me...I told her,...I didnt believe in prayer..I said.. I was accused of rejecting God...I had to walk to seamar and back...by the time I got back to the mission, I could barely get up the stairs because of my arthritis. I had to repeat this several times until I was able to get cash assistance from D.S.H.S Their J walking rule is idiotic along with some of their other rules. Laurel, who runs the mission doesn't appreciate a damn thing that people do for the mission. This person has admitted multiple times that she has felonies on her record. What were they thinking when they allowed a person like this to run a mission. This immoral cult leader is not fit to have authority over anyone. She should be replaced

You’re a very interesting person Adam. I enjoyed this video. I like to take road trips and see a similar contrast in wealth in my old Portland west side neighborhood I grew up in the 1950’s. It was nothing then like it is now. You now have homeless people on the streets and BMW’s and Porsche’s in the driveway adjacent to those streets. Sad state of affairs. I also liked your Joe Biden video, I see him similar to the way you do even if I am many decades older than you. Keep up the good work. As an aside, I also go thru Aberdeen once in awhile, even went past Kurt Cobain’s old home briefly on a trip last summer.

Thanks Bob. I love to travel the Northwest, but it's pretty clear that the wealth gap is ridiculous. The average houses are out of reach for people with average incomes. Meanwhile, certain sectors seem like they are raining money down on people who can afford two, three homes. Drive along the north Columbia River. Gross amounts of development for what are probably second homes. Joe Biden is doing even better than I expected. I may make a whole video on his performance, because I am so pleased. He's ignoring the culture wars and focusing on defeating the coronavirus and getting people decent jobs. Love it.

@@adame-hwilson150 That's one of the things I like the most, among many on President Biden, ignoring the culture wars and focusing on defeating the coronavirus and getting people decent jobs. That's me to a tee as well. Not being one to contribute to campaigns in the past, because of Donald Trump I went in the Democratic Headquarters in Pierce County here in Tacoma on a quiet afternoon in very early 2020 to inquire about helping Joe Biden. The earnest young man in the office was polite, but he didn't give me much guidance but I got the impression he wasn't for Biden, so I left without any feedback from him. I later found the Joe Biden website and was able to help online. The fact you stated you were a Biden supporter before Biden got popular was great to hear. On another note, if that fish and chips place is still open in Aberdeen and has still good reviews and I happen to be on a camping trip to the coast I may stop for fish and chips and think of you!

We think alike. It's a sad reality of the society we've created. It's not race, it's wealth that seperates us. If the poor, which is most of us, stop buying what the rich is selling, we can balance the scales. However, from childhood we're taught having wealth and/title brings more value and respect. Capitalism doesn't work in the long term, and I think we have come to the end of the term. What you witnessed is the reason why Capitalism doesn't work.

I would say that we know our economic system can work better for everybody, because it has worked better for everyone before. We know we can have more economic equality and less inequality, because we've had it before. We may always have some who have more than others, but we don't have to so few have so much more than so many.

YES...the System CAN work better for ALL. But that requires sacrifices that MANY that are in a place they can...WONT. WHY? Because that smacks of "socialism" to them. Its like they are BLIND to just how much of a SOCIALIST Country that America ALREADY IS!! And HAS been for SEVERAL Decades. Look at the Public Works Administration and the mega projects they were involved in...TAXPAYER Funded hydropower dams all across the country...why? To bring light and power to the masses. And Irrigation to MILLIONS of Farms. And it created a awefull lot of good paying JOBS in the process. But modern Americans cannot seem to put 2 and 2 together... due to what? Lack of education? Likely...I Learned of this stuff in Middle school in TEXAS of all places. Ignorance? Perhaps. GREED!!!? Now we are getting at the rotting core of American "society". Those that CAN..Refuse to help in many cases. YOU made the choice to help in some manner..and it is appreciated. But we NEED that kind of giving attitude a million times over to get these issues treated properly. And the majority of folk just dont care enough to bother...because they cant afford that ceramic wax on their fancy Porches as often. @@adame-hwilson150

Hey Adam, interesting video. I was just looking for videos about Aberdeen and found yours. I don't understand why people have such a negative or warped view about this video. How I saw this video was that.... there is a clear and stark difference of lifestyles living right next to each other. This was visible by the cars that you saw and how they were being used, one for luxury and the other out of necessity. It's unfair that this exists in America. I am not saying that wealth should be taken away from upper-class and given to lower class but as Americans ... or as humans we should help each other out more. Because it's certainly possible. I am not religious, I have no political leaning, but I understand what you were saying in this video. I don't understand why other people can't see it//??

Hello! I appreciate the thoughtful comment. And yes, I think you have the general idea I was trying to get across -- when there's a family driving a $107k car on one side of the road, and another living in a $4k car on the opposite side, isn't there something wrong with that picture? This is just a guess, but I think what sets people off is the comparison. When you say poverty is too bad, nobody argues with you. When you say poverty is too bad AND those people over there are rich, then people get their backs up. It's like you said, "And we're going to take YOUR money RIGHT NOW." I actually tested this theory recently in another video about meeting a homeless family in Lacey. I could have pointed out that the people living nearby had luxury houses, worth probably a million dollars or more. But instead I just said we should have compassion for the poor. The result was far fewer comments -- and far fewer views on the video, too. Thanks again.

Nice video, but now-days families take road trips and camp out of their SUVs, Vans, and hatchbacks. Perhaps this is what this family was doing with a stop in Aberdeen to check out the grunge capital of the world? I own a home and rental property and have slept in the back of my SUV many times while on the road throughout the nation. I've seen many family doing the same thing at rest stops or places of historical interest where hotels and motels might be fully booked. Anyway, maybe I'm just wishful thinking because I don't like the sound of a child actually living in an SUV? Good on you for the donation and I love that restaurant, too. Was there 4 years ago while checking out Aberdeen, WA.

I appreciate your glass-is-half-full approach. I myself tend to be an optimist, which is why my first take was, "Isn't that cool? Just a kid blowing bubbles in the wind." But my wife is more realistic, and she immediately picked up on the vibe of the SUV. If you live around here, you get a feel for cars that are being lived in versus cars that are traveling for recreation. A homeless family's car is full of stuff, not gear with a use. Just stuff they have. Loose clothes, random chairs, fast food boxes, bits of bicycles, things of that nature. Not neatly packed duffles with sleeping bags in one, clothes in another, kitchen gear in its own box. Everything is tossed together and fills the windows when you are homeless. I don't know why that occurs, but it's distinctive. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for a decent view of Aberdeen (My home town). Comparing the two scenarios isnt really fair. To many factors come into play when trying to judge from the position in life. The suburban family could have come from money and the family could have been well off and lost all their money to drugs or something illegal that would have forfeited what they have earned. The Porsche owner could have came from the lower class and worked hard to obtain the nice things they wanted in life. Either can be said by just the initial glance. Regardless there are jobs available. There is worksource and other agency's that will help you find a job. Some people CHOOSE a nomadic lifestyle or to pan handle and life off the mercy/ generosity of others. Ive been homeless a few times and had to rely on friends for awhile till I was able to stand on my own two feet. I am trying to decide if you are pushing for a type of communism or if your just venting with no intentions.

Dan, thanks for watching the video. I really do like Aberdeen; it's got some amazing history and cool things happening. I'd encourage you to consider why you would want to think the family living in the Chevy deserved to be poor, having "forfeited what they have earned." Think about why you cast the people with luxury cars as poor people who made the right choices. What is the intention behind those scenarios? My intention was to offer some empathy to the poor, to advocate for a member of the Aberdeen community, a little boy who was living in a Suburban by the river.

The porche owner could have sold heroin and shot up people like kurt cobain for real cheap, maybe that's actually why he did so much heroi, home town or not, someone who owns a porsche may not always be a good person and someone without a porche may not always be bad or doing some illegal an unjustified, there aren't too many problems for one individual to stop and realise that they're business is not more important than taking care of the customer, even if they aren't yet a customer, For whatever reason.

What was the point of this video? Reality check in Aberdeen. I am sincerely asking. You say there is a family living out of there SUV. While parked on the same block where three expensive cars are also parked. There's no connection to be made. Unless you are implying people shouldn't have nice things because there are poor people. Is that what you're saying? As if buying an expensive car is somehow responsible for another person's homelessness? Or do you think it's just sad to see the juxtaposition between poverty and wealth? BTW, Aberdeen is not the birthplace of grunge music. It is simply the birthplace of Kurt Cobain. Although Seattle often gets credit for the creation of grunge music.
