Real Talk & Friends - Anthony Sweat

What are some church history topics that you have wrestled with? Which part of church history is triggering for you? If you have a hard time reconciling the Church’s past, and even present, with some of your current beliefs, you don’t want to miss today’s episode!
Ganel-Lyn and Scott have the privilege of sitting down with Anthony Sweat who is such a gift around conversations of Doctrine and Covenants and Church history.
Anthony Sweat is an Associate Professor of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University. He received a BFA in painting and drawing and a PhD in curriculum and instruction. Seekers Wanted and The Holy Invitation are two of his most recent books.
In today’s episode, he dives into some controversial church history topics and he sheds light on some of the questions so many of us have.
At the end of the show, listen for his invitation-an invitation that goes along with the promise at the end of the Book of Mormon: Search the revelations of Doctrine and Covenants and ask for a manifestation of their truth.
For those of you who are looking, these are the references Brother Sweat gave for Joseph's Promise.
It was published in The Joseph Smith Papers:

I love Brother Sweat's definition about the Gospel and the Church. As a convert I have a brother who is a Baptist Minister and he is such a good man and does such great things in this sphere. I love to go and listen to him preach when I go home. I love the idea of the Church as a vehicle! Thanks so much.

Great words.Brother Sweat I am totally agree that the endowment is a gift form God to teach us power and capacity, but is also a place where He purify and heal. Speaking about the empowering teachings, to be clear, only God can teach them us if we have a strong faith in Christ , plus attention, plus pure reverence, plus humility, plus action . Differently, the endowment experience is a weird experience. I really love this conversations, you are another reason for me that testify to me that the Church of Christ is true,.You are powerful in sharing clearly the gospel. Thank you well done

I love the Doctrine and Covenants! When I gained a testimony of the Book of Mormon I then wanted to KNOW Joseph Smith and in the D&C I hear the voice of the Savior and Joseph Smith. I HAVE prayed and yes I know it is a true volume of Scripture. Thank you for this!

Oh boy really enjoyed this one I guees quite often we don't like change well because we feel secure and comfortable and can manage life better. Somehow from what President Nelson is saying about the unfolding restoration and listening to this conversation it seems changes are a coming which could make us turn away if our testimonies of the restoration aren't on a firm foundation through personal revelation and hearing the Saviour s voice that this is His will. Anthony certainly is a gifted gospel teacher as well as your good selves. But as Anthony says we need to be humble with it. Thankyou so much for your insights. Super duper.

I love all you guys do by the way. When listening to this episode, it triggered a memory of a cassette tape of a talk I listened to years ago ( probably 35+ years ago) but that I still remember loving and listening to many times. IF I remember correctly it was from a BYU professor with the last name Erickson (sp?) and it was definitely about the angel Raphael. He had come to the conclusion that this angel was in charge of overseeing the protection of the covenant people who obey the commandment of honoring parents; that he would actually intervene in their life to protect them, fulfilling the promise that their days would be long in the land. It would be fascinating for someone like you or Anthony Sweat to find more information about this if it is out there?

Please do not take offense to this, but just as we say the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we should give the respect to this great book of scripture and pronounce the Doctrine and Covenants (written D&C, but not spoken that way). After all are we the (people) who say Ne, as in 1 Ne 3:7 ... we would say ‘first Nephi’ not first Ne. Thank you 🙏👍🏼👏. PS ... I just found your pod cast and am enjoying it immensely. I too love Brother Sweat ... I have referred many to Seekers Wanted, awesome book and great counsel.

I think the church has made things uniform so that there is organization and no confusion. Otherwise people would just make things up and go out in every direction saying and doing whatever. BUT, if push comes to shove, yes, I believe there is probably a lot of latitude in things as far as what is right and acceptable and what isn't.

Another spiritual feast! I am so grateful to you for bringing Brother Sweat to Real Talk and allowing him to expound on this great subject. My studies of the Doctrine and Covenants hasve been so enhanced by his shared knowledge and insight. Thank you! I would like to share "Joseph's Challenge" with those I serve. Where would I find that? I've searched via the church's website, and keep being referred to Moroni..

this is a great vid. I have had a question forever that I dont want to sound disrespectful or sac-religious. It always has bothered me that Moroni didnt have garments on. Are garments only for this world? I like robes but I love garments!

My thought is garments are fit the temporal world and imperfect bodies. A perfected and resurrected body may not need garments as such. Just an idea but hope it helps.

Please don't nickname the Doctrine and Covenants as "D&C". It's the same importance as no longer nicknaming us as "Mormons".

  • @walkersabq

YES! Please DO NOT use the abbreviation D&C. Even though it's been used in the Church forever, it's extremely confusing to everyone outside of the Church, which I'm sure isn't your intention. Please Google "D&C" and you'll see why this is not good. Dr. Sweat was extremely gracious in not correcting your use of the abbreviation. Thank you for your efforts in bringing this content to the world!

Because of the surgical procedure ? Do you mean because people outside of the church or who don’t have relation to the church could become confused with the Surgical procedure when using the acronym D&C and may not understand that we’re referring to the “Doctrine & Covenants” ?
