Real Nice Brook Trout at Gardisky Lake (Off Tioga Pass, CA)

I hike up to fish Gardisky lake to see if the brook trout lived up to what I have read and heard.

    I am ready to hit it after the snow clears this year, whenever that is! The shallow areas should be deep enough so brookies can cruise closer to shore so the fishing should be real good. Having only the deep water option was a little tricky but doable. More options, possibly more fish.

    @@wildernesswithamani1027 nice. I haven't been to Hummingbird in years. It used to be full of small stunted brookies. Just up the road, near the Tioga entrance is the Gaylor Lakes trail. Try Ellery lake. End of the campground loop, over the rocky hill, down to where the creek enters, between the south shore and the little island. If possible, raft/float/boat out to the island. From the island shore, fish the widening slowing flow into the lake.

    Right on. I fished there once last year. I have a clip on my 'lakes and reservoirs' playlist where I headed down with a floating rapala. Got a few nice browns. I'm trying to load up my backcountry fishing and hiking playlists right now but as the snow draws nearer I plan to hit a couple of those lakes off the 120 with my boat. I'll use my small 4 stroke outboard if it's allowed. Saddlebag might be first.

    Saddlebag previously allowed private boats. You need to check at the store. Many rules due to invasive species. Ellery, I don't think power boats are allowed. Ramp is separate entry to the left of campground entrance. Check at Tioga pass Resort, they used to have exclusive access, would rent aluminum boats. I understand that owner (corporate/partnership) that owns Tioga Pass Resort, bought Saddlebag Lake Resort, about 2 years ago(?). Did you see the rebuilt Tioga Pass Resort? It was badly damaged from snow cave in 2017.

    You are there late summer? During a drought year. That is why the "shelf" extends so far out. Earlier in the spring/summer, fish will be cruising everywhere, will come out of the depths into the shallows. Spring, often a big snow field there on the north side. Next time: use a torpedo bobber, with tapered fly leader 7 feet long. Bobber will get your fly farther out. Reel in slow, like a struggling bug. Royal coachman, mosquitoe, mayfly, dragon fly, grasshopper, cricket later summer.

    Right on. Yeah, I mentioned how earlier in the year the fish would be cruising closer to shore when the water is up a bit. Only needs to come up a few feet for a lot more of the shoreline to be a viable target.

    Went up to Gardisky last friday. The lake has shut down for the season, I think. I did not see any fish anywhere. I fished fast, I fished slow, I fished shallow and deep. Nothing. I’ll be back next spring/summer soon as the road opens to try again. I did find a brand new unopened spool of 2lb test sitting on a rock. Yours, maybe?

  • @wildernesswithamani1027

    @wildernesswithamani1027

    Жыл бұрын

    Not my line. I use 6lb mono. Sounds tough. It took me a while to figure out how to get some fish to bite there. I didn't see many fish either time I was there. The only fish I saw were just sitting on the bottom either moving very little or not at all. They were in deeper water and I could barely see them. Their fins helped me differentiate between them and rocks. I only got fish fishing jigs deep, typically within 3-5 feet of the bottom in the deeper section. I imagine the fishing should be really good right after the snow clears out and the water close to shore on the shallower side is a few feet deep. Probably see fish cruising everywhere.

  • @Vanyoung66

    @Vanyoung66

    @@wildernesswithamani1027 Cool man. I didn't think it was your line. 2lb is crazy light for lakes although it might help you cast those 1/16 to 1/8 oz jigs far enough without waders to get past the flats. I'll be back in Spring. Tioga Pass area is great for hiking and fishing plus lots of camping potential. I walked all around the lake and thinking the same: The flats will be teeming with cruising brookies otherwise looking for an easy meal. Not many fishermen go up there. They are all at the Eastern Sierra or the lower "Western Sierra". Last friday reminded me of Nelson Lake out of Tuolumne Meadows. It is accessed via Elizabeth lake. I went there 5 years ago on 10/31. I remember because it was Halloween weekend. I fished almost all around the lake and caught no fish. I saw no fish. I did not get a single nibble until I arrived at the inlet. I followed the inlet stream and what did I see? hundreds of fat brookies stacked up waiting for the rain to spawn! I caught one after another for the rest of the late afternoon. I noticed there is no inlet to Gardisky, just hillside runoff feeding the lake, even in Oct there is seepage. I've heard that brookies are the only "trout" that can spawn without a stream. They aren't really a trout, though. Keep hiking and fishing the high country, man. I love it! And keep a few for dinner, population check.

    Glad you got into some nice fish. Amani and everyone else reading this, I suggest you get some wade pants. In most Sierra lakes you will catch a lot more fish by just wading out mid thigh. Check out some lakes off the 108 near the base. Kirman is no longer what it used to be but it might be worth the trek.

  • @wildernesswithamani1027

    @wildernesswithamani1027

    I looked at Kirman but I didn't have a float tube and I couldn't gat anything going from shore. For the most part, I get most of the fish in the videos on my backcountry playlist within feet of the shore. That does not include this lake. Wading would have been perfect at that flat area I pointed out. I would have had easy access to a giant half circle drop off.

For each lake I fish there I have a clip on my 'hiking and backpacking' playlist that shows the hike and trailhead so you can see how far it would be to drive there and what the hike would be like.
