I have some silver black velvet brushes that are squirrel and synthetic mix. They’re really nice quality, but they’re so hard for me to control! I really liked seeing the differences between these three types, and it kind of makes me glad that I got the brushes that I did, since they look actually a bit easier to control than the ones you got. Mine actually go back to a point easily enough!

Teoh, this was very helpful, I recently started to collect some quill brushes and yes they are huge. They do hold a lot of water, and pigment . I was able to get some very fine lines if you hold it vertically with just the tip touching the paper. Thanks again for a good video.

I just purchased the Princeton Artist Brush Neptune, 4750, Quill Synthetic Squirrel, Size 4 and still I feel that it is a huge brush, even on size 4. What I have also experienced from this particular one is that it holds loads of watercolor but it does not deliver all that water. It’s a beautiful brush, the bristles are soft and holds its point really nice but still the performance is not what I expected. I absolutely love the look and style of those brushes and I will surely try other brands. Thank you for your review.

HA! actually, with the rosemary pure squirrel mop that I have, it almost seems like the fur refuses to mat together, and that's why it holds more water, because the bristles DON'T actually want to clump together completely. My sable brushes are the same way, the floof apart when dry but you have to sort of work them a little with water before they will form a point wet because the water actually fills the spaces between the hairs. Animals often have an "undercoat" kind of like what birds do. They have little fluffy down feathers close to their skin which keeps them warmer, and the flight feathers are the smooth ones we tend to think of first with the pretty colors. Mammals often have several layers and types of hairs in their coats. I don't think the paintbrush hairs are the soft little dense undercoat hairs, they seem more like the sleeker topcoat hairs. those hairs tend to repel water away from the undercoat, keeping the animals warmer in wet weather. next time you get to pet a more fluffy kind of dog or cat, check out their fur... it's sometimes got long shiny hairs that come out from their shorter closer undercoat which keeps them warm.

Squirrel brushes are for covering large areas. You can get a large sable brush to do the same job but that's going to be a very expensive brush that cost several times more than a squirrel. Squirrel is soft and behaves like a mop, so it's floppy when wet and difficult to control the hair compared to sable which is more firm even when wet.
