    OH I learned something new! I didn't know they were different. I just thought, huh this is tied differently. I was watching a documentary on medieval castle making, where they also made some brushes the old fashioned way, the quills they used were from large goose feathers as the ferrule.

    I'm a big fan of the DaVinci Casaneo (serie 498) quill. I have number 0 and is my most loved and most used brush by far. I also have a couple DaVinci Petit Gris (series 418) Raphael's (series 803) and a Rosemary collapsible quill. But I tend to reach for the Casaneo most of the time. I love quill brushes. They hold tons of water and paint. Also great for soaking excess water from the paper. Thanks for your videos Teoh, always useful!!

    I would slightly disagree on the "point doesn't matter that much". Really depends on what, where, and how you're painting. Joseph Zbukvic used those Escoda Aquarios in some of his DVDs and mentioned that points are important for cutting around some shapes. I guess, it's much easier to paint a large area with the ability to carefully cut the smaller edges without changing the brush. Probably matters more for plein air than studio, but I also find it beneficial to change brushes less and be able to achieve precision even with a large wash brush. Escoda Travel Ultimo is much more pointy than the regular one for some reason.

    I love that my quill has a nice point because it allows me to use the brush for more situations. I prefer to carry less while traveling.

    Agreed, painting a large wash of negative space around figures or straight elements requires a precise tip, otherwise you need one brush to fill a large area ,and another to trace around the edges, while trying to work fast so the paint doesn't dry and leave unwanted lines... So frustrating. I've done it so many times and I'm done, I need a quill brush that can hold a sharp point. I was hoping to see some examples, but seems like none of the brushes featured here do it well.

    Good stuff as usual, Teoh. For me, both quill and mop are big-bellied round brushes, but a quill comes to a fine point at the tip. Both can swab on the washes but only a quill can scribe a thin line. And a quill should have a wired ferrule.

    This reminds me of Magnani Toscana ds, it reacts very differently. It takes so much time to cover the area with water or any paint, as if it's water resistant. But the second layer is smooth like any other paper.

    Thanks for this explanation. I’m enjoying the Casaneo in size 0. It’s soft and flows across the paper yet because of its size it works for me as a traditional round. Gives a very pleasing painting experience.

    I have been using the Casaneos for about 2 years and really like them. I can often find myself using just the one brush on a painting. I think I use the two smallest sizes, or smallest and two up. They’re not that expensive, either.

    I paint all my painting using jackson art's squirrel mop brush, I got a sable brush, but it doesnt hold enough water for me, so instead of getting a large sable brushes, I go with a cheaper squirrel mop brushes., with half of the price of a sable brush, I could get double the size.... but the learning curve for using squirrel brush is quite difficult because the brush doesnt spring back like sable brush. squirrel brush is for people that like painting with a lot of water, it is very difficult to paint fine details with it, so if you want to paint something with a lot of fine details like tree portrait, sable brush is better unless you dont mind getting a rigger brush exclusively for fine detail.

    I don't have any brushes labeled as quill brushes; but, I do have one that is labeled as a 1 inch mop brush. It loses hair every time I use it. It's from a brand called Simply Simmons which I've used before without issues; but, I do not like this mop brush.

    it seems like the size numbers are completely arbitrary and meaningless. in that, a 6 brush is not the same across brands. I thought a smaller number was a smaller brush. I'm so confused now. Are the sizes by brand AND type of brush? Do you have a video explaining the sizes? I don't think I could buy a brush online unless it gave dimensions Edit: Ok I see the description for all your brush reviews. I'll check there

    If you only use brush from one company, then the sizing standard will be predictable and easy to understand. But if you use brushes from many companies, it's best to look for the exact measurements for the hair.

  • @kenbalbari3229

    @kenbalbari3229

    Yes, even within a brand, they may have different sizing for quills or mops, which are normally larger, compared to rounds. And they may have different sizing for a line of brushes intended for oil painting vs one for watercolor. So best to check dimensions.
