Real Doctor Reacts to THE RESIDENT | Medical Drama Review | Doctor Mike

We are back with another installment of the "Doctor Reacts" series and this time I'm covering Fox's new show The Resident. I have not watched this show before but in reading your comments on the last few videos it seemed like this should be next up for the medical drama review series.
Considering I was a resident doctor myself this time last year, I was really excited to react to this new tv drama. In your comments, many of you made it seem as this show would be more accurate than the last few I've done so I had my hopes set very very high on this hospital tv drama.
Matt Czuchry does a great job of acting the part of an internal medicine resident but the writing leaves a little something to be desired (from the medical point of view at least). The main plotline of the show might have to develop a little more for me to fall in love with it. The medical accuracy is pretty good but again very very dramatic, which is not new to this type of series.
I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Watches The Resident / Real Doctor Reacts to The Resident. If you want me to continue making this series please like the video and leave me a comment on which show or episode you'd like for me to review next. Love you all!

    Pretty sure a broken rib while doing CPR is a good thing most of the times cuz you’re probably doing it right. A broken rib will heal, a dead person wont

  • @alyssarh

    @alyssarh

    2 жыл бұрын

    You were completely in the right. It's very common to break ribs when you're doing CPR correctly. A lot of people feel bad about this because you're breaking a bone and "hurting the person" but if you're doing CPR, the person is dead and you're trying to save their life. You don't do CPR on a living person and a broken rib doesn't matter in that sense - if they're dead they won't care (not to sound crude lol but I'm sure you get what I mean) and if they live then the bone will heal and you'd have saved their life

  • @alyssarh

    @alyssarh

    2 жыл бұрын

    @jeff idk if you're doing cpr, the person is already dead. You don't do cpr on a living person. Breaking ribs is a risk you run when doing cpr and I think if a rib were to puncture a vital organ and the person couldn't be saved, it wouldn't come back as murder on you because you were trying to bring them back to life

    @jeff idk I think there's also the whole "Good samaritan" thing, where you can't be held accountable for damage done if you were trying to help a person. Dunno if it applies to injuries done during CPR though

    I think the light-hearted approach is VERY situation specific. Recently my sister was hospitalized following a suicide attempt with sleeping pills and she was fine but unconscious. We had this nurse who kept walking in like "Woo! Is she still sleeping? She sure is sleepy! Wake up honey!" And it was the most tone deaf, upsetting thing. I definitely think it's different if you know the patient well, though

    Last year I was in hospital for a similar reason and my blood pressure spiked. Having a straightforward German doctor was really helpful for me to go "wait a minute, I almost had a heart attack at the age of 28 because of the pills I took" whereas if it had been someone really chill I might not have seen how serious my condition was. I've always hated doctors because my Mum died I felt like they were useless. I went private for my ADHD diagnosis as the GP was just way too light-hearted so often. The NHS in hospitals are fantastic tho.

    My STEM teacher was teaching us what to do when someone doesn’t have a heart beat. She was telling us about CPR and chest compressions, so I asked if it’s possible to break ribs when doing this, and she said: “No! There’s no way to break the ribs. You need to do the chest compressions under the ribs so you don’t break them”. EXCUSE ME WHAT.

    As someone with chronic illness I can absolutely agree that medical professionals who smile, have a laugh and a joke with you, actually pays attention to you and builds a rapor and relationship with you makes an ENORMOUS difference to your time in the hospital and even sometimes to how you feel. They don't even need to be a doctor or nurse, it could be a cleaner or the lady who pushes round the tea trolley; feeling that you're not alone in a building full of strangers makes a world of difference to a patient's experience.

    I really love your expiation on drug use. I remember one of my many trips to the ER for being a 9 year drug addict. I was actually home and got so high I was on the verge of an overdose and I passed out outside and it was a heat wave in my area. My family found me and rushed me to the hospital and I could only make like growling noises as a result of the drugs and I was severely dehydrated (so much that my kidneys were shutting down causing a ton of pain) and I had severe heat stroke (running an internal temp of 104) Luckily the doctors and nurses took really good care of me and were able to save my life. And I was definitely a very unpleasant patient because I was combative and confused like you said alternated mental status. Luckily I got some help and have been clean for almost a year now so thank you for doing what you do. You truly save people’s lives.

But it can be laggy or not work well at all. So an actual person there interpreting is always best, and I love the fact that you mentioned talking to the patient directly instead of the interpreter because that's another big thing in the deaf world, eye contact and body language

    Hey there Doctor Mike, I watched this video a few months ago and it was a bit hard to speak out on this, but I just wanted to thank you, your speech on doing the right thing for your family members who are in the situation of possible brain death and horrible quality of life after whatever happened really made me feel a lot more comfortable in my own situation. My mother passed just over a year ago now due to a stroke caused by TTP, and as I was her next of kin I was the sole decision maker in what happened with her. I of course spoke with my close family about what I should do and what would be best as she had 2-3 strokes prior which she struggled to bounce back from, and after a few days she still wasn’t responding. I fought myself so long on the decision just holding on for hope, but I slowly realized it was different from other times. I decided she shouldn’t suffer anymore, but I always question whether or not it was right. Every single doctor and specialist I spoke to said the same thing; That the risk is very high for her quality of life being extremely poor, and that my decision is honestly the best one they felt I could make, saying if it was their family they would be in the same situation and make the same decision. It just helps me feel better knowing I made the right decision, and that you have the same view they did. I knew the doctors hearts were in the right place, but hearing you say that where we know yours is in the right place, just gives me so much comfort and trust in the doctors that I had dealt with. Thank you Doctor Mike, I know it may not seem like that huge of a deal, but it really is to me

    I'm an interpreter, though I don't work in healthcare interpreting, and I also appreciated this aspect! @Pagan Deva that's unfortunate and unprofessional for an interpreter to say that. Sadly, in many countries, cost-cutting measures have put pressure on healthcare interpreters and degraded their working conditions to a point where many qualified professionals are quitting and their positions are having to be filled by those who are less (or not at all!) qualified. Sadly, short-term cost saving measures cost a lot more in the long term in terms of costs and patient safety :(

    We do not have much hierarchy in Sweden, which makes it easy for people further down the ladder to dare to speak out. Employees in Sweden are also expected to make their own decisions and do not always wait for orders. It's no problem to tell a manager that his decision is wrong and there will be no reprimands for such things.

    ROFL you're pretty aggressive about people having opinions about the opinions you post in public places. You must be super fun in casual conversation. Btw my point is I'd like you to be aware, and I'm commenting because you posted in a public space, implying you wanted other people to see it and pay attention. If you'd like to make comments with no backtalk, I suggest talking to yourself instead of posting on the internet.
