    A friend brought this along to a games night recently, and I'll be honest, I was put off initially by the cover, the board and the overall gameplay. But once we started playing, man was it an absolute blast to play. Everyone was really getting into the race, cheering on their horse that they bet on, and crying out in anguish when another horse pipped theirs to the post, costing them a lot of money. I highly recommend it, and that's coming from someone who ended the game with nothing!

    Can’t wait to get this one when it’s in stock! I’m looking for some +5 player games, so up to 9 players is perfect! I find the larger the group then there tends to be a wider variety of gamers. This game just looks so interactive and fun that everyone can enjoy.

    The race portion of the game is the same as a variant of a game I have only heard called Horse Race, which has slotted wooden horses. It is listed as Horse Race on BGG but does not have the variants listed. The betting portion and app appear to be an improvement of the variant of Horse Race by a long shot...

    You could likely implement a rule at the table that you have a buzzer or something to signal when you want to make a bet, and then you can carefully place the chip where you want, and then the game resumes until someone else signals they want to place something. In that way, you'd avoid the situation where the most sprightly individual or the person with the longest or most aggressive reach can out-move others at the table.

    @@Jacksonas I enjoy both and dont regret having either. Long shot is more of a "game" in that you have a bit of roll and write, some decisions as to which things to buy and what horses to slow down or boost so there is a lot of chaotic fun. Ready Set Bet is more of a party game in that its more simple to play for a lot of people, less teaching...its almost a perfect horse racing betting simulation. If you are the person rolling the dices and moving the horses it can be hilarious and fun to call which horses move as you roll the dices which is my favorite thing to do while the other players anxiously try to see where they place bets as the race progresses which is kind of a race of its own because you can only have 1 player's chips on any bet spaces so for them its to determine when the best time to place a bet is...too early and you might lose points, too late and the spot is gone.

    I wouldn't call it a party game, the betting is complex and there's a steep learning curve. The players have to think carefully but fast. In my opinion, Many players that are loud and having a great time doesn't make it a party game. I've played many games of Cosmic Encounter that would fit that bill (and I never really care if I win).

    Sadly a real time game doesn’t work for my situation. Teaching this to new players all the time sounds like a task and if it’s loud and obnoxious I hate to cause a scene or annoy/bother other people in the games cafe. • @joelface

    @joelface

    Жыл бұрын

    Loud and obnoxious is a choice, not an imperative with a real-time game. You could play it silently, I'm sure, or with hushed voices. I was also thinking that instead of rushing to place chips on top of each other, each player could have a marker of some kind that they can quickly place on the table in front of them to signal that they want to place a bet, and turn order is based on the order players placed their markers on the table. That might prevent the "obnoxious" moments where players are reaching for the same square at the same time and creating a commotion.

    @@StephenAslett Sure, but they said 7 does win most often. And 6 and 8 next most often, so you pick them to show. Of course you won't win every time, but it's always the best bet. Yes, you can wait until the race is underway, but why would you? Then you risk not betting in time. That's how gambling works. It's just odds, and the odds are always against you winning, but there's always a best bet. In roulette for example, you're guaranteed to lose money, but you lose the least betting red or black rather than a particular number.

  • @StephenAslett

    @StephenAslett

    Жыл бұрын

    @@StevenStJohn-kj9eb I don't think you quite understand how flattened the probability curve is in this game and how not like regular gambling this is. There's not a normal dice distribution here. Sure, 6, 7, and 8 are slightly more likely to win, but not dramatically more so like with regular dice rolls. Also, their payouts are much lower to reflect increased odds. And because they are the "safer" bets, you lose more money making 6, 7, and 8 bets if they do not pay out (one of 7's bet squares will cause you to lose 6 dollars if it doesn't pay out!). Not only that, but there are special powers and exotic and prop bets that you can make informed decisions on as the race goes on. This is a game as much about reading the table and making strategic bets quicker than your opponents as it is about luck.
