So many great books here in the wrap up! I have to say I’m intrigued with the premise of The Midnight Ladies Swimming Club! I love the fact you became so absorbed in Pachinko! It was way more accessible than we had anticipated! 😊📚

I expect Pachinko will be one of my favourite reads of 2022! The Midnight Ladies Swimming Club does tackle some difficult issues but the writing style etc just made it an easy, bedtime listen for me. Although I would love to live near the sea to be able to go swimming 😍

Great wrap up! I love a poetry collection and that one sounds so interesting. Girl In The Window sounds brilliant, so a sufferer of ME and Chronic Fatigue it's good to see some rep. You read some really interesting books and always send me off to check my library.

Hi Debra :) So nice to hear you talk about Perseverance, I have seen the cover before but not heard about it. Sounds so good, definitely one I'm putting on my radar. You read so many books for the disability readathon! I've been so out of touch with the community, so I didn't even know it was going on.

Hey Kevvie - I love, love, love audiobooks. I am trying to slow read my classics and listen along with the audiobook at the same time. I am finding that it really enhances my reading experience and brings the book to life. I am listening to the audio version of Great Expectations narrated by Matt Lucas alongside the book. I don't know if you know him. He's an actor/comedian/presenter from the UK. He does a really amazing job with the narration. Totally brought the characters to life for me.

Well, for a self-confessed slow reader, you definitely got through a decent number of books in March & April - I'm envious! You always seem to incorporate a wide range of books (in terms of themes, language etc) and whilst I might not read many of them myself (at 69, my remaining reading years continue to decrease apace) it's certainly something that makes your videos interesting and helps them to be distinctive when compared with more mainstream Booktubers. So far, my only reading for May is 'Crime and Punishment' (a 'proper chunky book' - to steal one of your phrases) but I'm nearly finished and hope to get at least another book done before the month's end. Thanks for the video; I'm already looking forward to next week's. All the best, Brian.

Aw thank you so, so much for the lovely comment Brian. I really do appreciate it. I like to try and vary my reading to enhance my own reading experience and read diversely. While at the same time, I want to be my genuine self on my channel and not get pulled into book hype etc or reading for the channel. Oh yes - you have a proper chunky one on the go 😂 I hope it's been a good read and worth your time. I seem to be reading a lot more books than I envisaged at the start of the year. I do tend to listen to audiobooks as well that boosts my numbers quite a bit. My reading goals for July onwards though is to maybe read a little less. But there are just so many books I want to read 😀 I hope you have a great week. Take care

Haha oops for getting so hooked in Pachinko that you read lots in it in March before the group read started. Perseverance sounds interesting. Aww both these incidents 😭 (murders). I had heard of the second one, not of the first one. Girl in the Window sounds very interesting, my partner has ME and I've never read a novel with a main character with ME. I have The Tea Dragon Society on my general TBR. That is very pretty artwork, I agree! I liked The Reason I Jump too. The one thing I didn't like was that sometimes the author it seemed wanted to speak for all autistics and as an autistic person myself, I found that what he was saying wasn't the way I felt about it. It was definitely an interesting read. Why You Shouldn't Love Me sounds like an interesting play! I can't listen to audiobooks myself because of my disability.

It was great to get so hooked into a book that I just kept reading. Some of the poems in Perseverance were very powerful and insightful. I think it's great that there is a YA book tackling the issues of chronic fatigue and ME. I totally know what you mean with The Reasons I Jump. I couldn't work out if the issues were as a result of the alphabet tool used by the teacher, the translation or the actual words / communication used by Naoki. I've since realised that Naoki is described as 'non-speaking'.

Many interesting books here that I had not heard of before. Also, I really love the first five books in the Anne of Avonlea series. Once they switch focus to her children, I did not feel as engaged with them any more.

Thank you. I think Anne of Green Gables will be the best for me. I enjoyed reading Anne as a child. I don't think I am that interested in her adult life etc. I am glad I finally got to read the book.

*Perseverance* sounds heartbreaking. I worked at a jail where they weren't terribly well equipped to handle special needs folks, and we definitely had hearing impaired inmates from time to time. I wonder how many never made it to jail for as badly as officers tend to react to abrupt movements of distressed civilians. My dear publisher hates Dickens quite a lot, and I believe she's be impressed that you're muscling through *Great Expectations* it bit by bit :)

Yes Perseverance had some very thought provoking poems in the collection. I don't imagine the prison system is well equipped to deal with people who have additional support needs. I enjoyed my first full Dickens novel. There are some chapters that felt over-written or just unnecessary but some sections I really enjoyed as well.

I want to read Girl In The Window now. I have chronic fatigue but developed it as an adult and it would be interesting to see a child's experience. The book on autism is interesting, when I taught English in Japan I worked with a handful of children with autism. My brother and a lot of my friends have autism and I found the Japanese approach very different from our approach in the West.

I have some health issues that hugely effect my energy levels and fatigue feels like it's never ending. Many years ago a school friend had ME and as a result had to go back a year in school. I think it's great that there is a YA book tackling the issues. That's interesting to hear about your experiences of teaching in Japan. I found the book useful but the language felt 'a bit off' and I couldn't work out why. I still got something useful out of the book but it was more of a starting place and I think a more comprehensive book would give a more rounded, broader understanding.

My chronic fatigue is very new to me. And a huge struggle. I'm always being tested to see what caused/causes this. Might even be long-covid? It's really hard though. I think that's why it is so important to have representation. And I can imagine it must be even harder as a young adult to feel alienated. I think it is so powerful that we now have YA and MG books that focus on disability and chronic illness. Translations are not always the best. This year I've read a lot of translated books that left me feeling confused.

@@HasabeMizurukara I'm sorry to hear you are having a tough time finding the cause /triggers for your CF. I hope you can find ways to feel a bit better. I think some translated fiction can be accessible but others not so. Depending on the writing style and maybe the significant cultural approaches taken that don't always work in translation.
