Hi guys! I never thought a video like this would be on my channel but look where we are! I always strayed away from the romance genre because I don't love reading loads of intimate scenes, but these books proved that I had the wrong idea :) I know I have a LOT to catch up on, so definitely let me know your favorites below^^

    I got into the romcom genre (in books because I’ve always liked this genre in movies) this year and it’s such a fun world to explore lol. If you’re interested in recommendations, I highly recommend It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey and The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren. 👉🥺👈

    I read all the Helen Hoang books. And I am quite an unusual person myself (sharing characteristics of some of her autistic characters) and my toddler son has been diagnosed with being on the Autism spectrum (like her child), and I am nearly the same age as Helen Hoang- so I can totally relate to her story, what she went through, and some of the stuff her characters go through, too. In fact a lot of the stuff they go through seem like she knows me and copy-pasted stuff from my life and mind and put them in her books... BUT to be honest, while I enjoyed "moments" within the stories in these books (and found them generally entertaining as a whole) ... those moments are always related to the representations of Asian or Asian-American cultural practices- never to the very weak (in my opinion) plots, the also weak-ish romances and the strange (bordering on problematic, because weirdly superficial and too "optimistic") representation of autism. But I am not criticising her, at all, in that regard. I just feel autism is such an annoyingly challenging disorder to successfully represent- especially by only telling stories about such people on the spectrum, who barely even require any assistance in order to manage to submit themselves successfully to the demands of society. Essentially it is ambivalent and she is being ambivalent about it, but somehow that has its problems- still. I just wanted to say: the books are cute, but in every way VERY LIGHT. I don't think they will leave any lasting impressions. I don't think they make good representations of the romance genre to get you hooked further into it. They are not very exciting. Cute, but a little too superficial regarding serious topics (and one of those serious topics being PASSION and LONGING). ^^

    If you like the comedy aspect of Rom-Com books more than the Romance you should definitely try To Have and To Hoax by Martha Waters! It's a second chance romance but the protagonists had a love marriage but eventually fell out of love... You could also try You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle the first couple of chapters are a little slow but I had to physically put the book down to laugh my heart out ! Love your channel and have a great day !

    I didn’t like the Spanish Love Deception and I even dnf’ed it at some point and then picked it up again. To me I didn’t like the hero’s response to the sexism that the heroine face in their office; especially in the beginning where he basically told her to suck it up and stop complaining that part made me so angry and was the major reason why I dnf’ed it; also i felt no chemistry between the two characters and was tired of the whole “i’m an asshole and act indifferent and aloof to you but i actually liked and respected you all along” trope that the guy had

    Cari: usually the romances that look more light hearted with fluffy illustrated cover are also the smuttiest. Not always but usually, like the Helen Huang books. I prefer second chance trope, friends to lovers, age gap trope and hard hitting emotional ones dealing with heavy issues in the plot and not only the physical attraction, though I don't mind smutty scenes if they're written well. But there's a lot of cringe in contemporary adult romance books nowadays. My favorite ones are all books that I cried with: On the Island (tracy garvis graves), The two lives of lydia bird (josie silver), the idea of you (robinne Lee), beach read (emily henry), the flatshare (beth o'leary), love and other words (Christina Lauren), well met (jen de luca), say you'll still love me (k a Tucker), forever interrupted & one true loves (Taylor Jenkins Reid) to name some 🤗

    I’ve been waiting for this review!! From your description of the first book I think you’d like The Flat Share. It’s set in London and very cute and funny with a unique writing style for the male POV. Both characters also have lives outside of their romance too which was really enjoyable. I also finished The Spanish Love Deception at the weekend and thought it was really bad for exactly the same reasons as you! The excessive use of ‘baby’ was making me physically recoil at my book by the end. The sexism also just felt like a badly done plot point to create some conflict but wasn’t well developed enough.

    one of my biggest issues with the spanish love deception was the way disordered eating was handled. like the main character essentially starves herself because she thinks she's fat and then it's just magically solved after like 3 days because the guy tells her to eat because she's 'perfect the way she is' and it's basically just used as a way to get the love interests together. it shows a really damaging misunderstanding of disordered eating/eating disorders and it's literally never mentioned again in the book. it made me super angry because the author clearly did no research on the psychology behind disordered eating and things like that take months if not years of therapy to sort through. but no it's just a random little blip and all she needed was a man to tell her she's beautiful smh.

  • @scaraxiao

    @scaraxiao

    2 жыл бұрын

    While i agree with ur point, I don't think the books depicts any forms of ed. It's repeatedly mentioned that she doesn't have any problems with food or trouble eating. She has no problems taking bites or just eating in general. She's not necessarily starving herself but going too overboard with her dieting schedules. I think the author failed to build up the characters personality because these traits are all over the place and the author doesn't take time to slowly describe how the characters are like to maybe build a better romance around those two.

  • @horsesrock081

    @horsesrock081

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@scaraxiao I'm sorry but I have to disagree. This is a topic that is very sensitive for me - yes, the heroine loves food, but having an ed doesn't stop you from loving food, it just makes you deny yourself food. The heroine clearly demonstrates disordered eating habits, and the way it's just resolved by the love interest getting annoyed at her and telling her she's 'perfect the way she is' was extremely uninformed and damaging to the way disordered eating is understood.

    OMG If you like the tension, the yearning, and true slow burns, I recommend Kulti by Mariana Zapata (but anything by Mariana Zapata is a TRUE slow burn!!), it’s an indie romance so it doesn’t have the usual formula of ‘the couple getting together midway through the book and then there’s a third act conflict at the 80% mark’ that traditionally published romances usually do and also her books are not steamy at all, there’s usually a scene towards the end which is just a few pages. Also, Christina Lauren’s books usually don’t have smut scenes, my favorite is The Unhoneymooners and maybe you should avoid Tessa Bailey’s books because they’re very steamy and ALWAYS have dirty talks lmao

    Omg! You literally said everything I was thinking about books. It seems like you have exactly same opinions and tastes as me! Like what you said about the “baby” and the weird possessiveness of love deception and not liking the last quarter of the book and be in there for the yearning and once the tension is gone losing interest. I’m currently reading the love hypothesis and have not read the last book but can’t wait to see what I think of them. Thank you for the video… really trusting your reviews will match to my taste.

    The intro is so funny I laughed in my morning coffee. Gonna read the love hypothesis soon. When you said you don't like steemy sences I thought you wouldn't like Red, White & Royal Blue. The story was definitly cute, but I found their love scences quite repeatative and rather boring in the end. Team tension here as well! I can recommend you the book hunting and gathering by french author Anna Gavalda. I am not sure if it would actually fall into the romance category but it has a love component and beautiful written, deep characters. The german title is 'together you are less alone' which descripes this lovely story quite well :)

    My favourite part of RWRB is the humour (and the characters), but wow is it funny. Here are some recs for people who like/want to get into rom-coms that aren't steamy (Rom-coms marketed as Fiction not Romance): - The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion: this is my go-to rec as a bookseller - Uzma Jalaluddin's books: Ayesha At Last is a Price & Prejudice retelling and Hana Khan Carries On is a You've Got Mail retelling (I highly recommend Carrie reads these as they are high tension/slow burns) - Nicola Yoon's YA books: I recently just read her newest book Instructions for Dancing and read it in a day. It was so wholesome and lovely! Let me know what you think of these recs!
