    Namjoon posted a photo of his book shelf this year and beside the Murakami books he had "The Owl Spreads Its Wings with the Falling of the Dusk" a book about the conversations between Murakami and another author Mieko Kawakami, who is both a fan and a critic of his, and in one part of the book she had lengthy conversation about the function of female characters in his stories. The people who tried to cancel Namjoon are the ones who read some sensational article about "feminist accuse Murakami" which is how they tried to paint the interview book but unlike them, Namjoon actually read it and knows what meiko actually talked about.

    i'm so glad that someone i watch is talking about kim jiyoung, that book man!! it's interesting that you found it to be rather unexciting to read cuz for me, i practically sped through it because i got so fired up. i think i had that reaction because the author articulated a lot of things that i'd felt but could never express properly; for instance, when jiyoung's boss told her to stop running errands for her coworkers and asked "why do women simply take things upon themselves [without being asked to]?" that just hit. i think the power of this book lies in those kinds of moments, when you suddenly see yourself reflected in its pages. funnily enough, i actually saw the movie first when i was still in korea, and i would recommend it despite the many changes they made for the adaptation. the film definitely tries to be more palatable than the book, focusing more on jiyoung's life as a young mother and her experience with what seems to be post-partum depression (which is interesting, since they seem to suggest she has psychosis(?) in the book). the movie elicited more sadness in me than passion, but it's very well done for what it is. i definitely wanna read human acts now bc 1) i read the vegetarian at your recommendation and LOVED it, and 2) a taxi driver and peppermint candy made me very interested in the history of gwangju. same with the moth books, since i listened to the podcast before but never fully got into it (as is what happens with most podcasts, for me). as for kafka, maybe i'll give it a go, though i've had mixed reactions to the murakami books i *have* read so far. 1Q48 felt like a drag and had too many meta elements for me, norwegian wood just made me sad, short story collections like wind/pinball and men without women were alright, his nonfiction work underground was informative, and i absolutely adore after dark for whatever reason. and let's not forget never let me go, i think i should re-read that one since, in your words, i don't think it fully "clicked" with me the first time. damn this became an essay before i even realized haha! hope you're doing well cari, and happy reading :))

    Haruki Murakami became my favorite author. His books always give me mixed feelings, because his characters are too... human. They fail a lot, they disappoint, hurt and make many mistakes. There are also some aspects that make me uncomfortable and I question these quite a lot. However, questioning doesn't make me appreciate his writing any less. There are so many things to reflect; some sort of life lessons to digest. I really think he presents points of views I would never know, because my life experience is completely different. Reading Murakami is like getting to know a whole new world - tho it resonates a lot with the one I live in.

I've read quite a number of Asian writers but I'm just starting with Korean Writers (happy there's a lot of translated works these days), but I often find there's often some historical or society backstory that helps you understand the context of the books. So far my favorites are 'The Court Dancer' and 'Pachinko', but l had to do some historical reading first to fully appreciate them 😅

  • @SaffariRose

    @SaffariRose

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@user-hb4zz4gh5e hmm, a series would make sense but I fear it might drag on because some parts are more intense than others in conflict, while a lot more are internal struggles. Unless of course each part (series) is focused on a specific conflict/era, and it's available on a platform like Netflix when everything is released at once, I think it might lose some audiences. I don't know if you've seen the k drama, 'Mr. Sunshine', which was a great format for historical time pieces, but I think that kind of format wouldn't work as well for this book because of the generational structure. For us to truly appreciate the structure of time and the inter-relationships of each character, we have to see most of the film in close procession. As opposed to Mr Sunshine or other dramas where the story focuses on the conflict of one set of characters, this book focuses on multiple sets of characters through time that are all interlinked with each other through generations. Like each person is a 'hero' /protagonist in the book and because of that, we can see the gradual contrasts of each character through time. Of course as a film, some parts would be skimmed over (cough, Harry Potter, cough) but I think experiencing the generational shifts/tones at one sitting would be more impactful. Anyways, for whichever format, it would really depend on who the scriptwriter is and how good they are in adaptating written works to film. Which would you prefer?

    Demian was my twilight. I read it in my existentialism class when I was 15 and I had a huge crush on the character of Demian, while Sinclair reminded me strongly of one of my best friends in high school. Demian’s mother and her friends reminded me of my mother’s theater friends whose new age parties I attended as a child (or at least how I saw them at the time since I was much younger). I loved it in a simple pure way and connected to it on levels at the time. I had already read Siddhartha which I would argue is his most famous book in the US. And over the years almost every book lover I meet has read Siddhartha and has usually never even heard of Demian. Cut to many MANY years later and I’ve been a BTS fan for two years (in 2017). And I wake up one morning on vacation to see them releasing abstract short films using quotes and symbols from Damien. I could not have been more shocked. 😂😂😂

The way you talked about Murakami writing reminded me the way Clarice Lispector writes, the thing about books without beginnings and endings and writing in flow of consciousness kinda way. Her work is very famous for that and also very unique, she has books translated to english and i think you would like it a lot! here are some my favorite of books of her that have eng trans: “Passion according to G.H” “The Hour Of The Star” “Agua Viva” :))

    Honestly, Namjoon, BTS and K-pop, in general, are the few of the very few reasons why I'm still here today, honestly without them and my fate that is not my time to die yet, I would be long gone dead six feet under the ground. I'm so thankful for them, they become my moon helping me to see in the darkness, my compass when I lost my way, they are my anchor holding me in place, they are my float, helping me to float when I'm drowning. They are my everything. The reason to this meaningless life that I am living, they make my life a little bit more meaningful to live. The reason why I stilll wake up when I just want to keep on sleeping forever.

    I don't know why KZread showed your videos just now. I've been searching for videos that would recommend me books that I can relate or enjoy reading to but had difficulties doing it. I'm a fan of books since the day I learned how to read but stopped reading at 3rd grade of elementary because we left the city and transferred to our province where books are really rare. After 3 years, I finally came home to the City. I was about to go back on being a bookworm but something tragic happened to me. I became really depressed that time to the point that I've lost interest in books and didn't even wanted to read one again. But after knowing BTS, they helped me a lot to recover from depression and gave me inspiration to do the things that I really love to do. My bias is Namjoon and knowing that we share the same interests, it made me thank myself for not totally giving up and still fighting to what had happened to me from that day. It's been already 4 years since that incident happened and maybe it's about time to do the things that I am passionate to do without letting anyone or anything stopping me. Thank you for being one of the rare book KZreadrs on this app! Expect me being one of your biggest supporters now that I've already found your channel!!! Wishing you and your channel all the best because you deserve it!!!

    Loved this video! I’m slowly making my way through Namjoons reading list and even though I don’t love every single one, I do take something from each book, because like you said, they all pose interesting questions. I’ve had When Breath Becomes Air on my shelf for a while, but haven’t come around to reading it, but just put it on my nightstand after watching your video! Can’t wait to delve into your recommendations as well :)

    I love how we all had the same idea to send you the list way before the new channel 😂🧡 I just recently reread Kafka on the Shore and to be honest it's not one of my favourites as well, so my little recommendation would be besides the shorts, Norwegian Woods, as this is his attempt at a "classic novel". I am so excited to go through your list as my first video of yours was the Murakami Coffees one 😅🙌✨

    Hi! Love how you took the prompt and gave it a twist. Really enjoyed it. I've always been interested on NamJoon's reading recommendations but don't feel smart enough.

    Maybe you already know, Namjoon said that he was taught a lot after reading . He always tries to understand people who are in different circumstances from him😭 how respectful!

    I need to start reading more, wow and especially try to read foreign books. I only ever read books from the UK or America, so I think that broadening my perspective may be beneficial. Thank you!
