Was about to revoke my like when you said you didn't like Crime and Punishment, but then I remembered I'm an INFP. We'll happily take Dostoevsky off your hands and pack him in with Steinbeck and Kafka. Out of alphabetical order, naturally.

Also meant to add, my algorithm might just be screwed up, but I don't see a lot of people making videos on classics nor close read books. Make sense when these books take time to read, so thanks for taking the time to not only read but make videos on the OG bangers!

thank you sm~! I love taking my time with classics, even though I know most people on booktube focus on more modern books. lol it's so funny you say Dostoevsky and Steinbeck are both INFP authors because I also really struggle with getting into Steinbecks works too! Maybe the MBTI is onto something here haha@@eolds

@@ArielReads_ ah man, I think Steinbeck maybe could have been claimed by you guys, but ‘East of Eden’ fully pushed him into INFP territory. Although if you haven’t read that one, you may enjoy the villain, Cathy Ames, since she’s a bonafide psychopath. He introduces her with this quote, “As a child may be born with one arm, so one may be born without kindness or conscience.” Good stuff.

I actually haven't read East of Eden! Despite not liking Steinbeck's other works, I still have that one on my TBR because of how praised it is by both classic lovers and non-classic lovers. I'm hoping that one can redeem him for me lol @@eolds

I think 14:21 you don’t need to campare with another whole diff book! They are suuuper diff Picture of Dorian and Crime and Punishment! But if you look closely you’ll find that in fact there is a lot of philosophy writing

"we are all people who are inherently negative and we try our hardest to be good." i agree, and for me that has to do with entropy-you can't do anything helpful unless you contribute energy and build understanding! obviously entropy was barely a thing at the time of the book's publishing, and i think that explains the religious ending. it's made clear, however, and i think is interesting, that artists had begun using mental/emotional dissociation as tool to scrounge around looking for emotional autonomy inside painfully rigid society-though not very intj of them i'll admit. ps do you think Alexey Karenin is intj? yes or yes? also, i should disclose that i think the meyers-briggs is silly and frustrating but sometimes fun. 😌

Now that you say that, I totally see Karenin as one of the more rigid and analytical MBTI's (like INTJ), and Vronksy is totally one of the more creative and fluid MBTI's! I would have to go back and analyze Anna more, because I always find it hard to pinpoint an MBTI in mentally ill characters because so much of their personality is taken over by that state of being. You also make a great point about the themes of the time period, especially religion in Russia being a central aspect of people's lives (I feel that Dostoevsky leans into that way more than Tolstoy). I think the main difference between the two authors is that Dostoevsky is actively making a case for religion and advocating for it, trying to get the reader to agree with him, whereas Tolstoy presents many different perspectives of this view on religion and leaves it open to the reader to philosophize about it.

@@ArielReads_ i agree with vronsky, he has a quite clear but fluid personality and that does help me see him more clearly! interestingly, anna was the character i related to the most and i think the mbti fails her completely. to me it's clear she needs to feel equal parts soft and sharp, to taste flavors both bitter and sweet, to converse both in poetry and with precision, to give as much as she receives, to resplend in company and recover in quiet. i think she needed a partner that loves to feel and to understand as widely and as much as she does, but who also loves to organize that understanding into something structural, and who, in my mind-and i thought this as the character of anna was being introduced-is tolstoy himself. and you mentioning how tolstoy presents many different perspectives is so true and reinforces that for me! 😊

I think you're def onto something, Anna has so many layers and is such a balanced yet nuanced individual that I don't think she really fits any of the MBTI's, and I think that may be why so many of us relate to her because we can see a little bit of ourselves in her no matter who we are at our core. I love Anna Karenina sm and I wish more people would read it! @@lilacswithtea

If it's an INTJ book, then Crime and Punishment is a description of INTJ in dark grip that is obsessed with the vague figure of "extraordinary individual" which fits well with dark grip of Ni-dom that Dario Nardi has described in his Magic Diamond. Raskolnikov's pathology is marked by his obsession with the abstract at cost of practical. Of course his execution of the plan is sloppy. Introverted sensing is his demon function. Like he's unable to grasp the specifics - for example that Napoleon existed in context of being an authority figure that had his own loyal supporters, not some random guy with an idea. As for the redemptive aspects of Crime and Punishment they exist in context of the Punishment part of the title. The whole point is that Raskolnikovs ends up confessing and accepting punishment. I'm an INTP. Personally, I didn't like this novel because of the ever-present poverty and degeneracy. What's the point of world like this even existing? But here's a question? How much of these supposed INTJ villains are just a power fantasy and how much of authentic depiction of the type? Like, yeah, I totally see a villain with executing flawless plans with inferior Se and demon Si. Like a real INTJ villain would be some kind of a delusional dysfunctional perfectionist, probably more pathetic than actually impressive character.
