I had "Death in the Dark Wood" on my book wishlist for Summerween, but i didn't end up buying it because my TBR was already rather big - but i guess i will have to read it after all because of your good rating 🤗📚

A bit more divergence in our literary tastes in this video than the first, but I'll just say three things: 1) I too love and have very high regard for To Kill A Mockingbird. It is also one of those unfortunately rare cases where an excellent novel is made into an excellent film. 2) Before you conclude that you hate Charles Dickens, at least give the 2005 BBC mini series of Bleak House a try. I absolutely loved it. If you enjoy it too I further recommend Little Dorrit (2008 with Claire Foy). 3) A book I'd consider a modern classic which moved me deeply is Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, if you haven't read it. Cheers.

Thanks for watching!! I have had Flowers for Algernon on my TBR for a while now, it is definitely on my radar and hopefully I will get to it this year! These days I tend to gravitate towards 'modern classics' so I appreciate the recommendation

@@ArielReads_ Most welcome! I hope it proves to be even a fraction as meaningful to you as it was to me. I personally preferred the short story to the book-length expansion that came after the original piece won the Hugo award. The novel is still very good, though, and itself won the Nebula. I think it stands a chance of you liking it because though there are no spaceships or other planets you'd have to consider it science fiction. Most of all it's a powerful meditation (I believe) on the essence of what truly makes a human being of worth.

@@pnutbutrncrackers I have heard that it is very existential and emotionally taxing to read, which is maybe why i've been procrastinating on it! I already know it will be a book where I highlight things on every page and stay up at night thinking about it haha. It's good to hear that it will be worth the read whenever I do get around to it

@@ArielReads_ I won't lie; the hardest cry I've ever had reading a book came with FFA. Then again I've learned how differently people respond or don't respond to the same things (literature, films, music, natural beauty, etc.), so I don't assume anything. I just hope your soul comes away edified. Mine certainly did.

  • @pnutbutrncrackers

As to be expected both similarities and differences here in terms of reading experiences and opinions. I hated The Secret Garden the way you did 1984, and found the actual writing, with the word "queer" on every other page, as enjoyable as chewing gravel. Inevitably people's tastes will vary, but I loved both Tom Sawyer and especially Huckleberry Finn (except for a boring middle section I would excise). I also feel And Then There Were None is a fantastic whodunit. At least we both appreciate Sherlock Holmes, so excellently drawn by ACD. And you've strengthened my resolve to read The Canterbury Tales and Beowulf. Thank you! (Now I'll watch your volume 2.)
