hello from Moldova 🇲🇩 ! I heard great things about the novel "Vara în care mama a avut ochi verzi" by Tatiana Ţîbuleac. It has been translated in several languages, but it doesn't seem to have an English translation, yet. It's not easy to think of a book from here, since today's Moldova was a republic in the USSR, and before the soviet occupation it was part of Romania, so we do share plenty, if not all, Romanian classics. Enjoy!

I wanted to read the Spanish version, but everyone I see talking about the book, read it in english. I kinda want to know what everyone is reading and see how good the translation actually is.

This is similar to the way I read books in French, but not entire chapters. I always have the English version beside me for quick reference, so if I don't grasp the meaning of a paragraph in French, I'll read it in English. Works better and faster than using a dictionary, and the deeper into a book I go, the less I need to do it.

When you get to Poland I highly recommend trying Olga Tokarczuk's Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead instead of going for The Witcher like most people tend to do with this challenge! Don't get me wrong, The Witcher is great, but our literature is so much more than that - Tokarczuk recently received the Noble Prize in literature and this one is her most approachable read (also one of my favorite books of all time!). She's also very closely involved in translating her work to English, which I think is so great!

I’m Lithuanian and hopefully you’ll decide to read something from Lithuanian authors. Ou country is a small one and unfortunately not many books are translated into English, but there are still some you can try. For example Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys or Salt to the Sea by the same author. Herdsman and the Linden Tree by Vincas Kreve Mickevicius, White Shroud by Antanas Skema, Silva Rerum by Kristina Sabaliauskaite (one of my favourite Lithuanian authors), Lost Birds by Birute Putrius. Marriage for Love by Žemaite, Vilnius Poker by Ricardas Gavelis, Forest of the Gods by Balys Sruoga (absolutely devastating, but important book from our history). i could try to find more books if you would like 😊

Whenever you get to the european nordics, for Finland you HAVE to read Tove Jansson's The Moomin novels. Literally some of the most iconic literature out there as it's giving wholesome just as much as it's giving philosophy. The author is a queer icon and one of the most celebrated children's authors out there. She's also a bad ass who turned down both Disney and Ghibli when they wanted to adapt her work back in the day. (There's also a brilliant 90s anime Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka based on the novels!)

Hi from Canada! I'd like to recommend the poetry collection Burning In This Midnight Dream. It's by an Indigenous Canadian poet and is a series of poems about her experience with residential schools which if you don't know what those are they were when Indigenous children were forced to go to "schools" to become white but they were filled with disease, abuse, death, and lead to so much trauma and loss of culture. Since you're not Canadian this poetry collection is pretty accessible if you don't know much about Canada. Another is Anne Or Green Gables which is just such a Canadian classic. Whether you've read it, seen the movies or shows, did the play at your school, or just heard people talk about it. It's hard to be Canadian and not recognize the name Anne Shirley. Another thing a lot of Canadians know (or at least people in my era) is the poem In Flanders Fields which where I live all school children were made to memorize it. even my aunts and mom and dad still know some of it by heart. It's short so I'll leave it below. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

So happy to see this video! Been watching you for awhile now, didn't know you were latina! You made amazing choices with the titles. I almost screamed when you mentioned Cristina Peri Rossi (I'm uruguayan). "Todo lo que no te pude decir" is actually a short stories collection, if you wanna jump into her poetry I would recommend "Arqueología amorosa", but, since you wanna get to know her better "La insumisa" is a book about her own life. Absolutely fascinating. Also, to add a little note: Cristina actually ran away from Uruguay to España during the dictatorship, her books were on the first line of banned books from schools and libraries because of their political content. She won this year's Miguel de Cervantes Prize, which is one of the most (if not the) highest hispanic award on literature! So excited to see your videos traveling across latin america, the literature here is absolutely amazing and never ever fails to impress

and just to add one thing: do not feel afraid of Gabito. go ahead with cien años de soledad, whenever you feel ready go for it and do not stop reading trying to understand every single word, the world of macondo will eventually build around you and you'll feel its magic until you feel like you're a part of it. for big words, you can always come back a second time and search them. let yourself be dragged into macondo and don't let anything interrumpt that experience! it's absolutely life changing, enjoy every second of it

A war novel ( I know, I know, not usually my thing either) about a 19 year old guy who has to fight in World War One and his harrowing experiences there. It’s definitely hard and brutal to read at times but the writing is amazing in a simple yet poetic way and super realistic. This is such an ambitious challenge but I have no doubt it will be really fun to do! Not only that but gives you an opportunity to read about the trials and triumphs of various people around the world. If you ever get to India I recommend A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. I've also been hearing a lot about Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel if you're interested in a feminist mythology. I haven't read it yet myself, but I've heard good things! Good luck on your challenge! Omg same! Idk why reading classics in the original Spanish (when it’s also my first language) intimidates me so much when I have nooo problem reading “difficult” books in English. Absolutely nooo shade, but I feel like in my mind (and opinion) Spanish writing is so much more rich and varied and so tied to the culture and time it was written in, that it makes it more difficult. But I would definitely never read them in translation, I want the payoff.

I def agree with you on this, and I feel the same when reading classics in Spanish or Portuguese as opposed to English. From my experience, if feels like romance languages have soooo many specific words with very subtle nuance that I don't find as much in English, so I do feel the payoff as well.

I've had my eye on this challenge for a while and have been confused about whether it's about an author from each country or a book based on each country. It looks like you are focusing on authors regardless on what the book is about. I think I want to focus on the location in the book itself so I can feel like I actually visited the place. If the author that writes about a specific country is from that actual country then that would be a bonus! Still I'm excited to see where this challenge takes you and hope you find some amazing reads!

It has a movie adaptation in Swedish with the same title ( which, according to me, is one of the best Swedish movies ever made ) and I know that there is an American version now as well with Tom Hanks. I think the book would stay with you for a really long time and the main character is in one way a bit annoying but he really grows on the reader and you will love him.

For Thailand, in the grimdark fantasy category, there is Obsidian by Sienna Frost (pen name of Kajornwan Chueng). A bilingual speaker, she is a native of Bangkok, but wrote the book in English. I haven't finished it, but it a desert fantasy with very lush prose and very brutal scenes. It has excellent reviews, but WARNING: there are several scenes of violence against women. It is not for the faint of heart, but a lovely, dark read with beautiful interior artwork.

This book is technically about a people that have no country but ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVES is The Latehomecomer: a Hmong Memoir. It follows the writer's family through Vietnam a little during the war, in Laos as they're refugees, in the jungles running for their lives, learning to be Americans and all the juicy bits about being an immigrant/1st gen v. 2nd gen, being Americanized v. Keeping the culture strong, racism and internal prejudice, and human emotions. There's also some descriptions of old folk tales and culture that's just so freaking fascinating!! And the end of the book is about the writer as she's in college and just describing her life in the modern day..... It's fantastic and I think it should have an honorary spot for "groups that don't have a country but are they're own people"

I got SO excited about you reading south america books and when you said you picked Dom Casmurro I almost died hahah It's not only a classic that I love but also by Machado de Assis, who is considered by many (including myself) the best Brazilian author ever. Machado was a free black man born in 1839 (and the slavery in Brazil was legal until 1888, his grandparents, I believe, used to be slaves and were freed) although this book (and most of his most famous novels) don't actually talk a lot about slavery issues and have white main characters. I hope you like this one! I'm also curious about wheter you're going to read the Spanish or English translation, I believe the Spanish one will be more similar to the original but it is surely a "difficult" writing we have here!

I am from Romania and unfortunately we don't have many romanian books translated in english, but from what I could find and from what I also read and enjoyed, I recommend you "I'm an Old Commie" by Dan Lungu. It's a good book, funny here and there, which presents a conversation on the phone between this old lady who lived in the communism in Romania and who's nostalgic about those times and her daugher who lives in SUA. Basically the book reflects how was the communist life in Romania and is really interesting, because it speaks about the struggles of everyday life in those times but presented as the best times of the old lady who was considered privileged due to some facts.
