I rarely watch TV because I mostly read for entertainment, EXCEPT FOR BRIDGETON! I watch that glorious series immediately and unapologetically as soon as it's out. Gorgeous new haircut ❤❤

I love these types of videos/challenges! Currently reading Three-Body Problem but it’s taking forever because I’m reading it out loud to my husband. We really liked the TV show, and it’s definitely less science-y than the book!

Thank you!! Oh wow that must be such a fun experience reading it out loud together! I haven't had that sort of experience since I was a child and my dad read me the Hobbit and LOTR

I think having only 5 books (a very reasonable number) is a good idea for exactly what happened this time around. Means you can actually try them all if you forget for the first 11 months 😆. So glad you enjoyed Book of Night! I agree that a lot of the dislike is probably expectations and comparison to her previous work.

Well that was thoroughly unhelpful to help me decide if I want to try out 3 Body Problem lololol. Glad you found The Book of Night such a gem though, I am definitely going to have to put that back on the radar!! And Bridgerton revived meeee!!!

the new haircut looks great on you! the completed puzzle looks so so gorgeous! congratulations on your 100km bike ride! hooray!! absolutely blows my mind. i’m relieved hearing your thoughts on the book of night as it’s also sitting on my tbr. i think i might someday watch the tv show of the three body problem and will most likely just skip the books. speaking of tv, i’ve never watched bridgerton and you’re the second person i hear gushing about the new half season. i suppose it’s time i watch it. i’m looking forward to finding out your next picks of self destructing books. it’s a great idea and certainly fun to watch! oh, and congrats on receiving the andrea stewart arc - what a coincidence!! hope you’ll enjoy it and look forward to hearing your thoughts! wishing you many great reads in june! 💜

Thank you!!! Yes book of night was definitely better than expected. I think people had the wrong expectations for it. Oh yes! If you like fun, romantic tv shows that are pure escapism then Bridgerton is the show to watch

Bridgerton!! 👍👍 Esp. as Romancing Mr. Bridgerton was my favourite book of the series by far. I found Three-Body Problem good as I love learning a bit of physics (though 90% going over my head) and I have a political studies education so found the political history and philosophy enjoyable. I mostly consider this reading as a "thought exercise" in the same way that Cory Doctorow's books are for tech/economics. They're less about the characters or the story, and more about demonstrating how the ideas may play out in practice, like war-gaming the "what if" scenarios. I'm 80% of the way through book 2, The Dark Forest, and confirm it's much of the same, but enjoying following the thought exercise, I'm still "intrigued" off and on as you so accurately/aptly described book 1. The last 3rd of the book 2's setting is really reminding me of The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz. Looking forward to seeing which self-destructing books you pick next! :)

I'm so excited to watch part 2 of Bridgerton this evening! I think for me thought experiment stories work better in short fiction like Ted chiang and Ken Liu's collections otherwise I start wanting more plot and character connections

I am so happy someone else liked Book of Night since all reviews I heard were negative and I am certain this was because of unfulfilled expectations. It was my first book by Holly Black and I loved it! I especially loved the ending, but overall I was attached to characters and felt the world was a bit stylised like Sin City or Batman, but maybe that's just me

I went into Book of Night with low expectations because of the mixed reviews ans ended up enjoying it fine. It was a 3.5 stars for me, I was also a bit confused about how the shadow magic worked. However, I don't feel the need at all to pick the sequel when it comes out. It's probably because of the setting that I found unappealing, I'm not very much into Urban Fantasy. Which is funny because there are others first books of duologies that I rated slightly lower that I do want to pick up the sequel because the world and story is more interesting : Six of Crows (yes, I rated it 3 stars, couldn't take the supposed age of the characters seriously and not a fan of the writing) and A River Enchanted (also a 3 stars, nothing wrong with it, it was just super slow and I wasn't super into it ).

I'm also not a massive urban fantasy fan...I have thoughts whilst reading them like "this would be cool in an epic fantasy setting" Completely agree about the ages in Six of Crows!! Kaz as the leader at 16 years old! Seriously add 10 years on all their ages! 😂
