Chord charts are awesome -- they help you learn and play songs super fast -- and they’re a great tool to help you start improvising because they are just a guide for the notes to play.
But …
Some chords can look really funky and complicated on a chord chart. How are you supposed to know what they mean?
That’s what this video is about. It will help you demystify complicated chords -- and will allow you to figure out pretty much any chord you can expect to find on a chord chart.
I mention that it’s useful to have some prior knowledge. To learn all about 7th chords, you can check out our lesson here:
• Understanding 7th Chor...
To learn how to build major and minor chords on ANY note, watch this lesson:
• Identifying Major & Mi...
So here we go! I’m using the song “Desperado” by The Eagles because it has lots of cool, funky chord changes. To download the FREE chord chart and follow along, just click here:
pianote.s3.amazonaws.com/blog...
Here are the timecodes:
- Song start - 0:51
- Major 7th chord (CMaj7) - 1:31
- The dominant 7th chord (C7) - 1:47
- The minor chord (Cm) - 2:15
- The slash chord (C/E) - 2:32
- The minor 7th chord (Cm7) - 3:27
- The diminished 7 (Cdim7) - 4:04
- The m7b5 chord (Cm7b5) - 4:26
Those should help you understand MOST of the chords you can expect to find on a chord chart.
To start playing real songs from chord charts, practice with Desperado, or check out 500 Songs in 5 Days and get 500 downloadable chord charts that you’ll be able to play after just 5 days:

Could you teach us about how you elaborate your left/ right hand? For example, in your left hand you played C and G. I know the G isn't necessary, but it sounds good. I'm trying to develop this technique, I usually play the 1st, 5th and 8th note on the left hand as an arppegio

Just wonderful, been searching for "learn piano chords easy way" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Nonason Ranincoln Genie - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? It is a smashing exclusive guide for discovering how to play the piano like a pro without the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my colleague got excellent success with it.

YAY! :) Glad you liked it!
I have never seen that explained anywhere before. Thank you so much for showing us how to play these chords. In the past when I ran into these type of chords, I would just substitute the root chord instead of trying to figure out what all the symbols meant and how to play them. Now I can learn to play them the right way!
Took piano lessons for 5 years (classical teacher) and learned more about music notation wrt chords than I learned in 5 years of grinding out scales and other boring instruction. You are a blessing.
Wow that's great all the times for learning black and White key 🎹 .
I was planning on watching a bunch of videos to learn what you have just taught, its amazing how you captured all that in ONE VIDEO. You are a great teacher Lisa!!!
You have broken down something that all of KZread couldn’t tell me in 6 mins- thank you!
Thanks Lisa you always break it down where it’s easy to understand and you have a great voice.
Thanks your teaching technique is just so amazing.
Thank you so much! The explanation was so easy to understand ) You're the best! sending lots of love!
Wow, so much packed into one short video. By the most pleasant and non-stressful teacher on the web. Merci beaucoup.
You are amazing ! You teach extactly the things I want to learn on piano. Thanks for that 🙏
A wonderful teacher thank you very much for forgiving your time. Thank you again Teddy korbos!
Love this song. Thank for your the lesson 😊
Amazing. It was so much full of fun learning with you
Truly amazing lesson. I just stumbled upon you and this is about the fourth video I've watched. If only youtube existed 15 years ago when I was taking lessons for 1 1/2 years. Sadly, I lost my job at the airline and had to immediately quit my lessons. I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me and I just stopped playing all together within a week. Sadly too, I was unable to sell my 1907 Chickering Baby Grand and had to just give it away. Now . . . I'm thinking seriously about buying another Baby Grand and jumping back into piano for good. I'm 60 and nearing retirement, what better way to fulfill my time. Your videos are very much a inspiration to me, thank you doesn't even begin to cover it!
Yet another wonderful lesson. You have a knack for explaining somewhat advanced concepts. Your voice is absolutely beautiful and I could listen to you sing all day. I hope in addition to teaching you are performing as well.
Cette vidéo devrait aider tellement de débutant qui ne savent pas comment utiliser des accords "complexes" ! Ce devrait être un vent de soulagement pour beaucoup d'entre eux! Merci pour ta pédagogie!
duude your lessons are my favorite thing on earth and this one by far is my favorite thanks a million:)
I’m going to have to rewatch this numerous times, I know…..but you explained the chords so well. Thank you.
Desperato, what a beautiful song, and you caught the heart of it. Somewhere there's a cowboy hat that must bear your name on it, that is for sure. Others have said it but it is worth repeating, you are a great and so likeable teacher. Very glad this channel exist, it's a personal highlight in my life, with it's music and wonderful people.
Wow I was hoping you will sing more of the song and you did. Thank you! The theory stuff was a great bonus too.

That was excellent, thank you so much. I have been playing for about two months now, but of course like everyone else, I have had time to burn and have been spending a lot of it on the piano. I have been wanting to challenge myself with a piece I really like. It's got all of those chords you mention, and my brain nearly exploded trying to work them out, so you can call yourself a life saver.😆👏👏 The song is called Choices jw songs. Thanks again. Forever grateful.😃

Miss Lisa Witt, If you came out with an album of covers, I would by a few to give to my friends. You have such an Angelic voice. It's now November and I've been listening to you sing O Holy night (from 2018) and I wish you had the whole thing recorded. Like Really !
for better voicing when playing a churchy 3rd in the base hand omit it in the right
Thanks mam❤

Oh, please, please, please sing more!

Although I have an account with playground sessions, I do enjoy your videos as well
Thanks such beautiful information from beautiful lady.
very nice. I think you mentioned having kids and starting yourself at 9. I wonder if you would do a lesson with a song your kids would relate to or if your nine year old self was learning today what song you would love to learn first. I'm thinking of my grand-niece who has a new keyboard, but doesn't know moon river, my favorite, for example. you are an amazing teacher. And, Oh, your voice.
Good sing.
I'm slightly confused by one thing. You mentioned the C7 was a dominant 7th though it was like it was a C6+half note of the scale and the maj7 is actually the 7th note of the scale but in a minor chord the 7th is actually the 7th note of the scale so is it not possible to have an eg: CmMaj7? Hope this makes sense.
Why did you sing only a stanza. Was hoping you sing all. Your rendition is so beautiful and I never aporeciated your melodious voice until this specific video of yours. Beautiful singing of a beautiful song.
OSM 👍
Could you do a video on how you come up with the chord voicings and in-between notes?
@PianoteOfficial
4 жыл бұрын
Those voicings are just different inversions. We have a lesson on that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqmp05p9pLjfj8o.html& And the in-between notes are fills. We have a video on that too :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4CCraVtqqyxYJc.html&
There is do much to learn in this lesson...I am just experimenting with complex chords lately. And this lesson just addresses the challenges I have encountered .i e slash chords are they always 1st chord over the top of or can they also be inversions? I also came across chords such as Cadd9....still trying to figure out how to play these types....
