REACTION: Washington loses to Michigan in National Championship 34-13 l Pac-12 Podcast

Спорт

Washington came into Monday's national championship against Michigan as the underdog for the fourth time in their last five games. This time it played out that way on the field as the Wolverines defeated the Huskies 34-13 and keep the Pac-12 without a national championship since the 4-team CFP began 9 years ago.
On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin reacts to the final game of the college football season. Michigan's defense put on one of the most impressive defensive performances we have seen in some time on the biggest stage in the sport.
The 2023 college football season is now officially over, which is never music to the ears of fans of this great sport. Spencer does, however, have some exciting news about the future of this show!

And before Michigan played Alabama, all I heard for 30 days was roll tide.If they had not imploded on special teams, they would have rolled the tide by three touchdowns. Even though Michigan won the national championship, I never thought they played up to their awesome potential I felt like.Corum was going to have several 200 game plus rushing and JJ was capable of throwing for over 300 yards. It’s scary to think how great they really could have been and yes I know they won the national championship.

It was a great win. I went to Notre Dame as an undergraduate and recall the ND-Michigan rivalry with fondness of the 1900s. In 1988, I was at ND as a sophomore and saw Michigan miss the winning field goal with no time left at 19-17. Bo Schembechler was the coach. He would have been proud of the Michigan championship. They really dominated Washington with excellent coaching and playmaking. It was a mismatch in hindsight.

Me too and it killed me to see the love Schembechler go with such a bad bowl record and no national championship. On the 70s they would be ranked in the top 5 and then lose to Purdue….or Minnesota in 1976 when they had been number one. He lost his first 7 bowl games. Michigan lost by scores of 10-3, 13-12, 14-6, 14-6, 27-20, 17-10 and 17-15 to an average North Carolina team. They scored 72 points in those 7 games and they only scored a few touchdowns. Year after year this went on and I got tired of having to accept wins against bad Big 10 schools as all we got. I understand beating those tough USC teams in their own backyard is hard but 5-12 is horrible. I was in Michigan Stadium one game in the late 70s and Schembechler, down a FG, sent the licker in on the last play of the game to kick the tying field goal….from 60 yards. The crowd booed and the kick was 15 yards short. And I think the only one who could stop Anthony Carter was Bo Schembechler. I will give Schembechler credit for one thing…..how he handled the Bill Frieder thing.

Michigan fan here and not here to gloat. UW is a great team with great coach, they'll be fine. I want to go into something you said in the prediction video 2 days ago: I have no issie with the prediction or *most* opinions with regard to the prediction. Even I was pretty 50/50 and everything said from both sides was concise, polite and logical. I took a bit of issue with being unable to convince a single person picking UW to win of one fact. I happily accepted that, yes, Michigan does not want a shootout because they have not seen a passing attack like UW. I conceded that easily. What I couldn't get *ANY* of the UW pickers to accept is that, no, UW has not seen a defense like Michigan's. "But...Oregon! But...Utah and Texas! They have seen one like it!" No, they haven't. I don't know what it ia but that Michigan defense not being in a Bama or UGA uniform makes people unable to see that they're *elite*, especially up front. Elite. Not good, elite. Very, very, very good. So I like your videos but I wished I could chime in on that prediction video as you recorded it and try to convince you, haha. UW met the Michigan defense and promptly went on to do next to nothing just like everyone else. It didn't surprise any UM fan even when we admitted that UW's offense is terrifying.

Congrats on a great season for UW. Penix was sacked once, but he was pressured and moved off his spot on most plays. Great job by UW for weathering the storm and keeping it close when it looked like it could be a blowout early. In the end defense still wins championships.

Mr. McLaughlin, i wanted to come back on a slightly older video to say thanks for all youve done on the locked on PAC-12. I have been a huge UW fan forever. I was deployed overseas for the 2022 season and discovered your show then it was a really great way to keep up on the only games i cared about, amd UW didnt have anything comparable at the time. I got home last summer and kept following throughout the media deal drama amd dissolution of the only conference i actually care about. I kept following through this amazing season, ending how it is with one bitter pill after another. I just want you to know how much i appreciated having someone back home when i was gone keeping tabs on all this stuff and it really meant a lot. Even though you're a duck fan, I wont hold that against you. All good things must come to an end and this was a great thinf you made. Thank you!!!

Please send a note to the boss that he's a basketball play-by-play guy now for a reason.

Michigan fan here. I have never been so nervous while 10 points ahead as I was against Washington and Penix. His receivers were coming open at times, and the threat of the big play was always there, and I never felt truly comfortable until Michigan went up 14 with 5 minutes to go. I have already heard some talk about a “bag game” from Penix. I don’t think that is fair to him. Michigan’s defense is not overrated. There was one big miss, one called back for holding, and one critical drop. If those 3 plays had gone the other way, it could have been dead even down the stretch. Penix has nothing to be ashamed of, they had a great year.

The score indicated how close it was - 3 touchdowns, not even close. Michigan beat the shit out of Washington, pillar to post. Physically, it was Godzilla vs Bambi. The actual championship game was played in the Rose Bowl. ... BTW, here's what you didn't understand. Michigan took away the long ball with their coverage. They dared Washington to throw short and score by making a long series of plays without falling behind the chains. It worked masterfully. Nothing, there was absolutely nothing that Washington could do about it. ... And Buddy, you're living in a Pac-12 dream world. 9 times out of 10, if not 9 times out of 9, Michigan would beat Washington. Michigan is just that much better.

I am from AZ and grew up in Generation X as a Pac-10 fan which expanded to the Pac-12 until its demise. I thought Washington was vulnerable in two games against U of A and ASU. I am an alumni of both - lol. ASU should have won the game up there in Seattle but there was a no-call on holding that the announcers clearly thought was a hold in the end zone. So, ASU lost late in the 4th quarter. They would have had a first and goal with four downs if that call had worked. So, the "Arizona" schools game UW a hard time again. Michigan likely watched film from close games like that to come up with a plan. Michigan had a well-balanced attack on both sides. The pressure on UW passing was clearly overwhelming. The star running back for Michigan in those quick touchdowns was awesome. The touchdown runs reminded me of great running backs of the past like Tony Dorsett or Earl Campbell. The ground game was just too much for UW.

Fancy passing games seldom work in PHYSICAL conferences like the Big Ten and SEC. Even the so-called lower-tiered teams in those conferences are PHYSICAL. Playing and beating a team in those conferences once a year is one thing - playing an entire physical conference schedule is another thing entirely - it eventually takes its toll as the season wears on - even on the top tiered teams in those conferences. The line of scrimmage dictates play in those conferences - something the new additions will experience growing pains with. Michael Penix Jr. had flashbacks of his Indiana years. I kept telling people Penix would be hit in this game - and hit CONSISTENTLY. Welcome to the Big Ten!

Let me telling u a dirty secret. The only reason the score was close at the half was because after Michigan scored their two tds the coaches got cute and called pass plays to try to get McCarthy off that went incomplete. If they kept running which wash couldn’t stop at all in the first half the score would have been much worse. I am specifically thinking of that drive where they had a 3 and 2 and then a 4 and 2 and passed it both times incomplete when they had been dominating on the ground. If that games was close at that point they would have run and would have scored a td.

The last time Michigan won a natty was a really tough year for me, so I'm shaking in my boots right now.

Look at it this way. It was a big ten championship game. It was a good game.
