Why Washington will beat Michigan and win the National Championship l Pac-12 Podcast

Спорт

The Huskies enter Monday's "Big 10" matchup with the Wolverines boasting the best passing offense in the country. Michigan's defense has been stout, but they have not seen a passing attack like the one Kalen DeBoer's Washington team brings to the table.
On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Craig Shemon of 'Locked On Big 10' to talk about Monday's championship game. This matchup brings contrasting styles, how might each coaching staff attempt to counter the other? 10:15
Spencer and Craig also dive into the individual matchups that will decide the game, especially how the Wolverines plan to cover Washington's wide receivers. Plus, they both make their game predictions. 22:20

Washington has given up an average of 30 points a game to teams ranked #5 thru #20 If they give up 30+ to #1 Michigan, using a long sustained running game, Washinton may not have enough possessions to even score enough points going up against the #1 pass defense in the country? Michigan has a great offensive line as well and should have limited trouble running the ball. Their QB is pretty dam good as well. Michigan wins, running the ball against a weaker Washington defense?

Let's turn that around, Big 10 is a defensive minded conference. Defense left the pac12 long ago since the USC dominate days. So if we look at it like that, then it is truly amazing what Michigan did to Ohio St, still an offensive force in a defensive minded conference. So we can play any kind of narrative of we truly want to. But at the end of the day, we saw what Georgia did to FSU, regardless of the excuses you try to make. SEC is on another level and Michigan beat the best of the SEC. Washington in trouble.

It’s kind of funny to listen to this after the fact. It’s funny how people salivate over elite offenses and think that a great defense can’t keep up. If your offense is elite and isn’t paired with elite defense, a workman’s like offense with an elite defense can beat them. The failed inflation of PAC12 defenses gave false hope. Ignoring Texas pass defense woes was a huge mistake. Not being smart enough to understand the difference between Michigan DL, Oregon’s DL and Texas DL tells me you don’t know football. Texas is big and slow. Oregon just isn’t is inflated because they play in a conference with weak OL and a lot of passing.

When Texas and Oregon tried blitzes too often, that's what they got. The results were 12-20 yards and a first down. It also got those teams back on their heels.

Ohio State 2022 Marvin Harrison, Emeka Ebuka and Julian Flemming. Running game Maiyan Williams and Treyvian Henderson. QB PENIX VS STROUD. I would rate OSU 22 over Wash 23 offense wise. God THIS. I hate Pac12 fans. I'm not saying the Big10 is good (there's been no middle for a decade or more) ... but the Huskies are having a historic season (for them) because they've managed to claw their way to the level of a middling iteration of Ohio State (and I don't think WU would've beat the OSU Michigan had to play earlier in 2023) or a good Penn State team. Since Chip Kelly -- Oregon is a real a football team most of the time. Someday USC will be USC again. When the planets align you get a Marques Tuiasosopo or a Browning or a Penix and Washington is fleetingly relevant (though probably still short of elite teams) ...not that different than Wisconsin or Iowa. Big10 fans know that most of the conference sucks. Pac12 fans on the other hand think it's a 'selling' point for Washington that they clawed out a bunch of 10-point wins over basketball/baseball schools that happen to have football teams.

@johnnyoldenjr. In fact, those two high-level defensive lineman for Texas never even so much as touched Penix on his 38 dropbacks. Not even one hurry. Only .5 (1/2) half a tackle for loss the entirety of the game. Even when Texas was fresh and rested at the beginning of the game or coming out after half-time....still couldn't pressure Penix. So, not to worried about a highly overrated Michigan defense that never even played a top 40 offense all year and now on top of that, Michigan will be going against the top offensive line in college football this year as Washington's offensive line just won the Joe Moore Award given annually to the best offensive line in the FBS for the year. Yeah, Michigan will 'Bowdown to Washington', Washington trounces the Wolverines 49-17 on January 8th.

Seriously! Why do people continually think a good offense will beat a good defense?? They said “Michigan hasn’t played any team that had Washington’s offense.” That’s true. But Washington didn’t play a team with a former NFL trained defensive coordinator (to my knowledge). Defense travels. And if a defensive team plays a low scoring game, they don’t worry. When an offensive juggernaut is suddenly stymied, the entire team starts to worry and that continually affects that team throughout the game (most of the time). Defense. Wins. Championships. Also, this kid on the left talked about the Oregon St. game as to why they could win a low scoring game. How many players on OSt’s defense are going to play on Sundays? UM has a bunch! W. Johnson, Sainristil, Stewart, Barrett, K Grant, M Graham, K. Jenkins, R. Moore, M. Paige, B. McGregor. Go Blue! Way to go Wolverines!

I had a thought come to me this week after digesting the season and people talking about Michigan slowing down the tempo. Washington with its bend don’t break defense has allowed a lot of big plays both from runs and passes, many would say this is a disadvantage but this makes the tempo of the game increase. Allowing the offense to get back on the field quicker. It also allows for a fresher defense later in the game to make those big plays they seem to be able to do. They give up a lot of yards but hold teams from scoring as much as the yards would say. 13:21
