I never knew that Michael J.Pollard came up with this title. He's one of my favorite character actors. Appeared in many classic films, such as 1967s Bonnie and Clyde. Sadly, he passed away recently but has left behind a great legacy of work. I doubt many knew his name but everyone knew his face.

So cool you guys can bond over music. When I was a teen in the 70's my mom would let us listen to our music on the car radio and would constantly say "who's this? " I like that. Great memories since most kids parents said " turn that crap off." I listen to today's music with the same open mind. And I went and listened to all my mom's 45 records to see what she liked. Music moves the soul of every generation. Much love guys✌

Great stuff Kevin really appreciate you sharing! Music can be a great connector unlike almost anything else. Stay safe and Merry Christmas!
My first concert was Traffic days before my 15th birthday in 74. I was still recovering from a fractured skull and saw double at that time. We smoked really good pot during the concert and I was seeing 4 of everything by that point. I remember how crowded the stage seemed to me and of course my friends found that hysterical. I laugh at it now. And don’t see double anymore.😂 I was hoping to see Steve Winwood this summer but not looking like things will be normal. Great reaction.✌️

This is a great song. I love the jazz influences. This was back in the early seventies when some ambitious rock musicians were dabbling in jazz and the jazz bands were dabbling in rock.

A high heel part was for platform shoes that were in style with the time the Low Spark was the flame underneath a spoon for herion users and the gun that didn't make any noise was a syringe that should put the song right into perspective

Back in '72 when I was 16, I formed a band with some school friends. This was one of the songs we used to do when we went round to one of the band member's houses, as there was an upright piano in his front room. We never got to play it live though. I saw Traffic back in about '74 at the Mountford Hall in Liverpool. I saw Stevie Winwood about 15 years ago but there can't have been more than about 100 people in the audience, as it had not been very well advertised. "John Barleycorn Must Die" is an excellent song of theirs, but it's more on the folk side.

Traffic is an awesome band. I think anything Winwood touches is gold. Other real good traffic Songs are Dear Mr Fantasy, Glad/ Freedom Rider, John Barleycorn Must Die, Tragic Magic and Empty Pages. Winwood was also great w Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker in Blind Faith

9.5 timeless tune. the buildup as someone who listens to a whole song and it's bits and pieces that make it up it's a fantastic piece of work. from winwood's great electric guitar to Chris Woods fantastic drop a pick up down into the Horn of the saxophone so you can mic it...what makes up a great classic rock song and that's what made traffic so good they stood out from everybody else because they were a true jam band.... I could be in the mood for this anytime as soon as I hit play on the CD player and hidden treasure begins with the magic of the acoustic and Chris Wood flute all the way to the end of the album...there's a reason why a lot of classic rock songs have this song and its rotation still from the beginning of it coming in from a big giant fade and building up.. you hear it still on a lot of great FM classical rock stations.

Traffic is a monster!!!! Winwood is a white man in a black body!! Loved him since 1963 Spencer Davis Group “Gime me Some Lov’n Everyday!” He was 15 when he formed the group. An amazing musician.

By 1970 Dave Mason had moved on to be a member of the "Family", Delaney&Bonnie. Look at the line up of players on that album.Delaney&Bonnie and Friends are the most overlooked group ever. Look at members: Dave Mason, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russel, George Harrison, Duane, and Greg Allman, Rita Coolidge, Jimi Hendrix among others. What groups came out of this Supergroup you might ask, This album, Derek and The Dominos, Mad Dogs and English Men, John and Yoko, and some other notable mentions. But, I've gone too long.
I knew that Michael J. Pollard came up with the title while he and Jim were in Morocco, but I never heard the story of the third verse! Thank you!

I've been hoping you would get to this song. I was never a huge Traffic fan but this album (and this song specifically) was the big exception. I absolutely love this song. It came out while I was in college and a lot of my friends were into jazz. It helped feed my budding interest. After rock, jazz is a close second for my favorite musical genres. Of course, the time period also helped since extended jams were in vogue. I saw Steve Winwood about 4-5 years ago and was really looking forward to him doing this song. He did, but he blew it. He left out the middle verse and I could tell by the look on his face that he muffed it. I was really disappointed. A better song of his was in his first band, the Spencer Davis Group, Gimme Some Lovin'. That's terrific. He was something like 16 or so when it was recorded. Great choice and great review.

Hi guys, it's been a while since I last listened to your channel, which is my loss. So you finally found Traffic. Wonderful early progressive band that I had enjoyed since the "John Barleycorn Must Die" album. Check out there "Live in Santa Monica" album just to see how special they were in concert performing along with the Muscle Shoals "Swampers" session musicians. Unfortunately I missed seeing them play live, but in the 80s I did get to see Steve Winwood perform and he played a few of the old songs along with his solo hits of that time. A very fine show. Thanks guys, as always a fine reaction.

Really appreciate the kind words Steve. And also really sorry for your loss, those are things we never really get over but I hope the great memories it sounds like you had with him give you more good days then bad.
First time I've heard this song but I do know a few tunes by Traffic and I agree with what Shawn says, I felt it was too long and I think its one that you have to be in the right mood for. I would recommend that you listen to Paper Sun from 67 which for me is the ultimate Summer of Love pop song another track I like is called Empty Pages. I dont know how much you know about Stevie Winwood but he was only 16 when his first band Spencer Davies Group hit the top in 66, he left them to form Traffic in 67 so he would still only be around 21 when he was making this track.

Hi guys....a non paint day, so I’m early. Like you, I don’t know much Traffic, but I enjoyed this one a little more than you did....I would say 7.75-8 for me. The piano was almost hypnotic at certain points. I can see someone like a Gerry Rafferty being influenced by this. Keep well✌️

Yes! No doubt.
I'm not familiar with Traffic but that is an interesting backstory you told Shawn. I am pleased with this song. This is like an epic. Hearing this song is like being on a musical journey. The melody is very good. There is a lot of music going on in this song. I hear sax and guitar and piano and other instruments producing a collage of musical sounds. I like the instrumental breaks with piano. This tune seems to have a relaxed vibe. I agree with what you said Trey on the meaning of the lyrics and musicianship. You both gave an honest review. Shawn, you rated this a 6..5 and Trey rated this a 7.5. I agree Shawn that the song could have maybe been shortened a little bit, but this time I'll agree with Trey's rating at 7.5. I was impressed with this song. Good job.

I thought there was actually no guitar on this song. Steve piano, Grech bass, Jim percussion, Gordon drums, Chris Saxaphone and Rebop congas.
Nice review as always, guys. But yeah, I'm not a fan of this song. There are tons of long songs that fly on by but this is a bit of a snooze. At 6 minutes it would be a perfectly OK song. Not great but good. At 12 minutes, though, it only really works as background music.

Ya it is for sure a long long song Ilan!!! Thanks for watching!
I couldn't agree more on your review. While I appreciate their musicianship and skill involved throughout, it's just not my cup of tea. Too heavy on the jazz. I'm more of a rock & roll person. Give me some hooks, melody and lyrics and I'm good to go. The guys in Traffic are incredibly talented, no doubt. Just not my preferred style of music. Song rating - 6.5

This is the London Symphony's recent recording this in gorgeous high definition so you get to see the whole orchestra starting pianissimo and, fifteen minutes later, you see the sweat flying.
