The “tonnin seteli” face lives on as a meme to this day 😅 The show itself was very popular in its day.

That is not the whole bit. It continued through the episode, like 4 separate scenes: him going to the table still wondering did he really gave a 1000 mark bill, he sitting drinking the coffee talking to himself, and him leaving and saying one more time that it was a 1000 mark bill. And what most people misses the last bit after the end credits of the show where he is outside looking in the window at the cashier, not saying anything. And all the while the cashier has that same expression on his face.

Kummeli was super popular during 90's among all ages. It was displayed once a week and I used to record it and watch it again and again and memorise myself with the most popular lines. Then in the school we were playing these characters and mimic the show.

Kummeli was huge. Everyone were quoting the dozens of funny phrases they came up in their skits. They even made an album where the most popular characters performed their own typical song. Great times.

I used to watch this as a teenager in the '90s. It was very popular, in my opinion the best comedy series of that time. One of my favourite characters was Matti Näsä.

The best part about this one skit was that it went on through the entire episode. They returned to the guy more than once, drinking his coffee in disbelief. Kummeli was always my favourite. At certain point in the 90s most of those guys lived within a few kilometres from my home and it was so amusing to see these faces in the local store on weekly basis.

I go to have coffee in that same place (observation tower in pyynikki) about 10 times a year. Always thinking about this when I'm paying. They actually have a picture of 1000 mark bill in their cash register too.

Kummeli ran for a total of 7 seasons between 1991 and 2004 and these guys have been up to a lot more than just that, including the still running TV show Kontio & Parmas and a total of 6 movies including the latest Kontio & Parmas movie. Let's not forget, these guys are also accomplished musicians with Heikki Silvennoinen (the blank stare guy) being one of the best blues guitarists in the country.

It's fascinating you can enjoy Kummeli because a lot of their humor is very local and based on funny sayings or one-liners which are mostly lost in translation.

Next one should be 'jankon betoni' that one became international meme, I remember, some german football team plyed it on ther social media, when defeat cause gaspin. Also, those guys are prestige muscians, who made serious carrier on that area too. Gig bus is the place where the deepest humor and comedy exceeds, been there, seen that.

The comedy here is the cup of coffee cost 8 Marks. Customer paid with 1000 Mark note (tonnin seteli). Tonnin means thousand. Seteli means note. So what he got back was change from 10 Mark note. 10 Mark note actually looks pretty close to the color of 1000 Mark note.

Kummeli is an absolutely iconic show, and this is one of their most iconic skits. There are phrases and idioms still in use in colloquial speech today that a lot of people probably don't even know or remember to be from Kummeli originally. There was just some undefinable "something" about their material that made it way funnier than it seemed like it should be. Also, Kummeli: Kultakuume is a legitimately good movie.

Technicly i think small shops today say: We only take like 50, but there must be a label on the door for that. Maybe a taxidrivers can brake that on sundays after friday and saturday rush. That be like 300€-400€ todays money.

Kummeli is by far the most well-known sketch comedy group of all time in Finland. There are others just as legendary in their own ways but nothing tops the 1990's Kummeli-mania the whole country was having. They toured big festivals in front of huge live audiences and all. They came in just the right time, when there was a big economic depression in the country and people needed to laugh. We still quote them on a regular basis even though they haven't really done this in a while.

Since every episode had a lot of mini-sketches like this, there was one later in this episode where that guy who bought the coffee was sitting at the table with his coffee, still going "it was a thousand mark bill.." and the guy still just standing there, staring. They had a ton of sketches that just became kinda "memes" (before memes were a thing) with the repetition alone :D Really loved the show. I don't know if there are any well translated clips of "Matti Näsä" but his absolutely bitter sick-of-it-all rants were some of my favorites.. always the same guy, ranting about something that's gotten under his skin that time and always ending in the sentence "I feel I'm not really *in the mood for ANYTHING ANYMORE* "

"Memorable scenes" we still go to this cafe from time to time. You can't find a Finn who hasn't heard "tonnin seteli" to death, really. These days the cafe has its own coffee blend, still very delicious doughnuts. And the view from the sightseeing tower (this cafe operates at the bottom of a sight seeing tower) is beautiful, all over the city. Just last fall we performed this sketch in the first year student event in university, everyone knew it from my 19 to 40 year old classmates. People actually use "tonnin seteli" as an adjective these days to describe the facial expression of someone. "I had a tonnin seteli" when they experienced something that made them speechless out of being baffled. Or "their face had a tonnin seteli".

I recomment Spede skit: Naisen logiikka, Woman locig. It is old one, and its from same person who made Uuno Turhapuro. Spede Pasanen, the old finn humor "father" died 2001. But his creations still lives in memories of maybe all finns.

I've always loved Kummeli. According to wikipedia It started in 1991 but for some reason I've thought it started in 1989 when I was on 1st grade. It's weird, since I have memories watching the show during that time.
