The 1973 song "Lumi teki enkelin eteiseen" by Hector is often voted the best Finnish song ever. You should listen to the full version. The lyrics of the song are very sad but capture a certain period of time perfectly. It talks about poverty, suicide and people moving from Finland to Sweden in search of a better life.

funfact: Leevi and the leavings was and still is VERY common to play in the radio and their records were one of the most sold ever in finland, however what makes it different is not only the style of their music but the fact they never made a single live gig, not a single! but only one live concert BEFORE they become the leevi and the leavings! i dont know why but feels like they just magically got into the top of music scene in finland and they still are there even Gösta died long time ago and they have not been doing any records after that.

Eppu Normaali started out as a punk band, but turned more into a rock and melodic Manse-rock. Manse = Tampere. As Tampere is "Manchester of Finland." They took their name from Mel Brooks movie Frankenstein Junior, where Abby Normal was translated to Eppu Normaali.

Schlager (Iskelmä) music is listened to a lot in Finland. Especially among the older age group, but nowadays also among younger people to an increasing extent. You can go and listen and dance to it on the spot. At the same time, it is a social event where you see friends and get to know new ones. Maybe even find a spouse. And Dancing is also hard exercise and practicing body coordination.

@@merileopardisaksassa7030 It's not my music either, but I understand the reasons for its popularity. Especially when you think back 40 years. That dance stage gathered all the young and old of the area in one place to meet each other and make connections and see friends. The dance floor was actually the social media of its time, but with the difference that the activity was face-to-face and you could also get exercise. Of course, alcohol has always been part of the patterns, and if you insulted the wrong person, your face could change color for a long time.

Leevi and the Leavings and Irwin Goodman have so many good songs, I recommend listening more of their music

i work in a karaoke bar in Tampere Finland and people still sing songs from EVERY decade you listed. I think almost every song has been sang that is in this list

Olavi Virta was definitely one of my grandparents favourite Tango singers.

5:44 I will tell you something about this song and the man singing it. The song's name is "Olen suomalainen" (in english "I am Finnish") and it is like a hymn for the Finnish people. Everyone knows the song and everyone has sang it atleast once in their life😄 The man in the picture is the one and only, LEGENDARY Kari Tapio. He is one of the most successful Finnish singers of all time. He's called "Sinivalkoinen ääni" which translates to "The Blue and White Voice" and "Iskelmäkuningas" (Schlager King). He was a living legend and toured nearly 40 years. Sadly he passed away on 7th of December 2010, aged 65.

While the stereotype is that heavy metal is huge in finland and all that, in reality pop is still something most people listen to and metal is just sort of somewhere on that level. It's not like everyone listens to metal and metal is something you hear everywhere. It's not exactly niche but it isn't something for everyone either. So yea when it comes to finnish people most remember their "Eppu normaali"s and such more fondly as a result. Thats at least how I see it as someone living here.

This is quite booring list about finnish music.

There was rock in the 70's in Finland already, one of those artists in this list being Irwin Goodman, also one of my favourite rock bands from the 80's, Eppunormaali. We have a wide variety of artists and music genres indeed throughout the years, 70's forward. Before that it was bit stale.

We call that music genre iskelmä or in English hit music. Kinda similar to pop music, but not same. Iskelmä is more traditional, down to earth and more love song than pop music. Also more music you would dance to with someone while pop music is more something you would dance to alone. And while rock etc. is relatively more popular in Finland than else where, it isn't the dominating music genre topping the listings. Iskelmä and pop music dominates the lists, radio and charts and are top sellers mostly.

Iskelmä comes from isku, - the beat.... so - there you get it...

You might have heard some Nylon Beat covered, for example korean S.E.S and Aespa have covered them.

Oh dear.. This is tops the evolution of oldish finnish folk music.. Very little anything else. The biggest genres and bands are missing. Finlands been a pioneer in punk, metal, glam rock, electronic music, experimental rock. But mainly inside Finland of course 😅 We have many popular bands world wide, but nobody knows they are from Finland.

And Raskasta Joulua tour (= jeavy christmas) songs! That is a group of well known heavy metalists in Finland performing our most traditional chrristmas songs in a rock style. Our christmas songs are usually quite melancholic compared to the rest of the world. Christmas has a different feel to it here ❤. One of the best from Raskasta joulua are Marco Hietala singing "Varpunen jouluaamuna"(sparrow on a christmasmorning), the whole group singing "Tulkoon joulu" (let there be christmas) and "Heinillä härkien kaukalon". Try out those ❤❤ You would also love a finnish band called sonata arctica, good songs are "Tallulah" and "The last drop falls" You should also check out a video titled "Northern kings - finnish heavy metal medley" those guys that perform there are like the backstreet boys of finland (you'll see what I mean 😂)❤

Samuli Edelman (1994) is also an actor. You can see him as villian in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol movie.

BEHM is quite a recent artist, but her music became incredibly popular very quickly (and for a good reason).

I'm now 69 years old and when I was young in the 60's and 70's I listened english and american rock. From finnish bands I listened to Wigwam, Tasavallan Presidentti, Tabula Rasa. None of these mentioned in this video were my favorites.

A lot of good songs on this list, including a few of my personal favourites: the 1974 song Paratiisi, the 1980 song Viidestoista yö and the 2002 hit Vielä on kesää jäljellä. If you want to dive into finnish rock, bands like Eppu Normaali, Popeda and Apulanta are good starting points. However, I would also like to mention some of the bands/artists that were not mentioned on this list (and some of my personal favourites in brackets): Hurriganes (Get on), Dingo (Autiotalo, Levoton tuhkimo), Anna Eriksson (Kun katsoit minuun) and then my all time favourite Nightwish (most songs actually but Ghost love score with Floor Jansen is close to my heart).

It's a list full of random songs from popular artists of that time period. Definitely not based on charts.

You who made the original video, the sound snippets are too short

Everything up to 80's and partly after that as well would be called "Iskelmä" here. It's name that covers the old pop songs, often translations from mid europe hits to finnish and then local production in similar style. Maybe the common nominator would be melodies in minor keys. If you listen metal this can be seen in a rich variety of melodic metal songs. It's not that uncommon to play metal and still listen that old melody rich music (my self included).

There's just few songs from each year on that list so you shouldn't base your thoughts too much on a selection. With different artists or songs the list would sound entirely different. Most of those artists on the list have decades long careers and they've done songs from different genres. E.g. in the 80s Disco was so popular, that many artists had to do Disco songs just to make a living. Eppu Normaali is the all-time best selling band in Finland. They've been around since 1976. A live from them: "melodikakofoniko Eppu Normaali - Kitara, taivas ja tähdet". This is the song which has sold the most note sheets: "Lasse Mårtenson - Myrskyluodon Maija", One for the sentimental moments: "Dave Lindholm - Pieni & hento ote". The most popular Finnish music outside Finland are Classical, Metal and Folk music. Probably the genres in which the Finnish language, idioms etc. don't play a factor so much. Hundred Finnish Rock songs in 10 mins: "Suomirokin evoluutio - 100 suomirokkibiisiä, 1 otto".

Eppu Normaali is something I would recommend. Vuosi 85 is probably my favorite one from them. They have sort of rock-esc songs and ballads. Wouldn't call it rock per say, but it's not pop either. Other band I would recommend is Klamydia, Finnish punk rock band. Lastly I would recommend a specific song. Teräsbetoni, hetken tie on kevyt. I'm a metalhead through and through but this ballad has stuck with me.

As you know finland is known for metal music so i also recommend checking out bands like nightwish and HIM :D From nightwish i think the safe ones to start with are ”Nemo”, ”Amaranth” and ”Noise”. They all have different singers (they have had 2 vocalists before their current one) Nightwish is one of the most succesful Finnish bands in history and their style has changed alot over the years. First albums with their first singer Tarja were more operatic and symphonic (mostly because Tarja is classically trained and aimed to become an opera singer) with the next singer Anette, they got a more folky and mainstream sound and currently theyre a kind of a mix of those two with Floor Jansen. From HIM id go with ”Join Me In Death” or ”Right here in my arms” HIM doesnt do music anymore but their singer Ville Valo is still working on his solo career :) I chose these bands because they are pretty good to start with if youre not familiar with metal yet. Theres many more its actually a big rabbit hole :D

Seems like a super subjective and very one dimensional list focused solely on pop/iskelmä music. However, apart from the last entry, they are all well known and popular songs in Finland And, as you noticed, all the other genres are missing completely. Finnish music and listening habits have always been extremely varied and genre crossing.

​​@@Tommuli_Haudankaivaja Only if you focus only on domestic sales and radio play of Finnish music in limited metrics, and ignore international and digital sales and play; Nightwish, HIM, Children of Bodom, Hanoi Rocks, Stratovatius, Apocalyptica, Lordi, Rasmus and others have sold far more and have had a bigger influence on music domestically and internationally than any of the others listed here. Also, many of the songs listed were just Finnish covers of international hits. Also, if it is just domestic success, seems strange how there are minor artists included, yet those that sell out stadiums like Cheek (in Finland) and Nightwish (in Finland and globally) were not included Only one of the top 10 best selling artists for sales just in Finland were in that list, and only two if you include top 20... seems a bit off, seems to me it is yet another "Nightwish is too metal and sa**nic for Eurovision" situation with the list

The 1968song is the most used song in finnish ads

Several of these artists are still well known and popular. My grandparents, my parents, me and my brother and now my child all enjoy listening to those songs. If I go to a bar, I choose a bar that plays Finnish Iskelmä music. This compilation was made by a person who enjoys listening to Iskelmä music, so other similar music was completely left out.

It's iskelmä mostly, same as schlager, but not quite. The English translation for iskelmä is schlager.

A lot of the older finnish songs were versions of foreign music, like italian or french. Tapio Rautavaara's "Yölinjalla" (on a night drive) talks about dangers and work of a man driving truck in the middle of the nights, long distance, loneliness. The song is otherwise Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" to the tea except for the lyrics. Nightwish, Don Johnsson Big Band, Mokoma, Kingston Wall and Hurriganes are some of my recommendations. But above all, for me, Leevi and the Leevings. Most depressing lyrics ever but singed in jolly fashion.

You should also listen to few songs by Kirka and Kikka, who missed in this list! They are my favorite schlager artists ever and they also left a mark to Finnish music ❤

7:52, interesting observation, I guess the internet happened and we started having way fresher influences from around the globe and that's how the change is so drastic, life became much more fast paced and so did the trends too.

This is mostly iskelmä-music from 50-70s, light, very light and traslated song from other countries. This list has lighter music like pop and stuff. There was a wave of pop, rock and punk just before 70's, even before that. But yes, mostly radio played this. Finnish Metal is very connected to this kind of music in Finland, melacholy, darkness, loss, perseverance, you name it.

Metal is big in Finland.... but they dont play it much on the radio. I like both, i think our pop music from around the 90s is amazingly good for a such a small country and some of our metal is world class, such as: "Wintersun - Time (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER" on youtube. So good.

Biggest names on Finnish music history for me are Leevi and the leavings hands down. They have so much influence on music even in now after 20 years later when their singer passed away. Well i am metalhead myself but i like to listen old Finnish songs now and then.

You should also check out the Finnish rap evolution. Rap is nowadays the biggest genre in Finland. And also the biggest artist who does music in finnish was a rapper called Cheek.

I think this list is about radio plays and records bought, on those lines.

All of these are legends by now.

Surprisingly many of the songs from the late 50's to the early 80's are actually translations of (mostly then recent) songs from other countries, and not only from English even. Finnish iskelmä is similar music style as schlager, or it is usually the translated name for the music style for the most of the songs in this video. It is kinda in between poprock and dancing music, I think. This list is probably the best selling song of each year. Finnish rock and rap music is very popular as well but is more rarely in the top 5, maybe because majority of Finns are older or it's based on radio hits or something.

I missed the big hits made by Bomfunk Mc, Nightwish, Rasmus, Darude, HIM, Sunrise avenue and all the metal bands. I think the most streamed finnish songs are Freestyler and Darudes Sandstorm.

Look for Aki Kaurismäki "Leningrad Cowboys", and then also "Steve Seagulls"

I would say that the most of those -50-60-70 and some of -80 finnish (slchalger) music is covers of Russia, Italian, French music. I really love music of that time. Rock,metal music came little later. Late -80´s and -90 and-2000 came metal music more.

I was born in 1983 and I know all of these songs. I dont really have a favorite decade in Finnish music, since I still listen to all of them. Tapio Rautavaara was also an actor/ athlete and I think Olavi Virta was in some movies as well, Samuli Edelmann was in one of the Mission Impossible movies, Jope Ruonansuu is also an comedian, ..... Eino Grön I think still performs and sings and he started his career in the 60s.... etc. And especially in the 50s and 60s the music genre was mostly "Iskelmä", which can be translated (schlager, schlager song (piece of music made in schlager style, i.e. in a distinctively European style of light popular music, typically with facile, sentimental lyrics. ) ......2005 was also Iskelmä. There are still lot of Iskelmä artists etc. There were so many artists that was missing from this list,... Dingo, Apocalyptica, The Rasmus, HIM, Vesa-Matti Loiri, etc.

Well my gripe with this would be that it only contains this pop genre burger style music. There was so much more available.

Katri helena was my childhood Apulanta was my teen years. I knew every song since 1960. Metal and rock was absent cause they rarely hit no1 on any music list. And they are not played in radio that much except in radio rock and radio City which focus on metal and rock music.

The 1984 song was by young Jonna Tervomaa, who was a top name in the kids pop scene for a few years, then went somewhat "dormant" for a decade or so, to rise to higher popularity after the mid-90's again, with a new style. I have acquired both her better known records from the 80's. Noting that Movetron was included, this list managed to skip some other possibly more popular dance projects, and even the 2000 song Sandstorm which has been deemed one of the world's best recognized tracks. It used to be common to translate foreign songs that had remarkable popularity... the results often were fairly camp. Then, Fredi covered the song "Beautiful in the rain" by Tony Hatch and Petula Clark, lyrics written by Juha Vainio, who is one of our real wordsmiths, and IMO the lyrics are better than the original. Fredi also covered an instrumental song "Magic Fly" with Finnish lyrics written for him.

In the 70's Finish artists either covered Iyalian songs in finnish or made in Italian style. This was also a perioid when Finnish standard of living has rose such hights that that average finns went to vacation in south europe enmasse like Italy, Spain and Greece

I seem to remember Alexi Laiho enjoying when one of the Children of Bodom's albums went #1, because the people who had alledgedly sworn they'd never play the band on radio were then forced to play it. Metal still isn't exactly mainstream in Finland, even though it is popular. (Or at least was. Who knows what the kids listen to nowadays?) I don't listen to radio but there are one or two of metal music programmes and some rock radio stations might play something like Metallica or maybe something a bit harder as part of their normal programming. This list wasn't even necessarily what topped the charts, mostly it was like what the lowest common denominator, the least offensive, music you might have heard from the radio at the time. Also, the snippets were so short and from so random places that you couldn't really tell anything about the songs. By the way, if you're interested, there's actually a fun, little, irreverent, ironic, almost anarchistic, Christmas song by Juice Leskinen called Sika. The lyric video seems to have an okay translation in the comments. Musically it is extremely simple, so I don't know if you'd get anything out of it, but the writer/performer was considered to be one of the top lyricists in Finland. Just make sure you listen to the original and not a cover version.

These clips were way too short to grasp anything about the individual songs. Also some of the clips were chosen from really awful parts, not representing the songs to their fullest.

The lack of heavy metal on that is if it was the most popular song of the year, while more mainstream here metal is still not the genre that would get the most listeners countrywide here either. The part where can be seen connection is melancholy and rather dark lyrics though, as that goes on in all genres here 😂

I think heavy metal doesn't work so well when listening radio. These all were super-popular radio songs. Yes, some heavy metal songs work but not all. And some Finnish people just don't like metal so these are safe choices when radio channel decides what to play. I'd guess these were most selling artists per year or most played artists/bands per year. Haloo Helsinki has few quite heavy rock songs also but they're mostly pop-rock. And it's really hard to get a feel about any song when listening only 3secs per song. Should have been 10-15secs per song. And basically you have so sing in Finnish if you want to be popular in Finland. There are only few exceptions, like Nightwish, HIM, etc. Many amazing artist started in English but they had to change Finnish, after this their popularity skyrocketed.

In FInland heavy metal isn't as big of a deal as you might think. Because of Lordi's Eurovision song in 2006 people tend to think Finnish music is all about heavy metal.

Because Finland has most metal bands per capita, and because the most popular finnish bands outside of Finland are metal bands, and because finnish metal is very high quality and bands are appreciated around the world, THAT is why Finland is known for metal. It IS a big deal.

@@cguerrilla7315 you proved my point. They are popular outside of Finland but not neccesarily in Finland. Sure there are some popular ones but not that many. The amount of bands per capita doesn't mean anything if only a handful of them ever made it to the big arenas. This video was about the songs popular among the Finnish People.

i dont' know who made the original video but it's cut too short from the songs. you miss a lot of things with this

Also many of the earlier songs: "Hopeinen kuu" = Guarda che luna, "Lazzarella" and many other hits from 50's to 80's.

I remember the years ~2000-2010 being full of heavy metal and hard rock. As someone who has never liked either of those genres, it was quite painful and frustrating hearing those genres being played everywhere relentlessly. :D Back then it was definitely mainstream (although many metal fans were thinking they were special snowflakes who had an unusual taste in music). Now, probably not so much. But I'm an old fart and don't even know what's popular these days.
