Saw Billy many years ago in Melbourne. He had us crying with laughter and sliding off our seats. But almost the funnier thing was our friend who was with us and who didn’t laugh once, when asked if he didn’t find Billy funny said, “I didn’t understand a word that he said”. That set us off all over again.

This is my favourite comedy routine of all time. It was for comic relief and I had the cassette tape of the concert with him doing this one. My friends and I would listen to it all the time during our high school years in the mid-late 80’s. We would hire VHS tapes of his performances and watch them as well. Finally got to see him live in the 90’s. A couple of years later I was living in Kings Cross in Sydney and I ran into him in the street. Lovely fellow with a real curiosity about the world. Australians and Scots look at the world in very similar ways and use about the same amount of swearing in casual conversation, so Billy’s style of comedy always went down well in Australia (and NZ). These were the first countries outside of the British Isles to take to his humour.

We live in Sydney. My girlfriend (now wife) and I first heard of Billy in the late seventies. We rented a video of his live performances. The video went for about an hour. It took us at least three hours to watch because a) we couldn't understand what he was saying because of the outrageous accent ; and b) once we did understand what he was saying we had to pause or rewind the tape as we were rolling about in hysterics. We've been devoted fans ever since. Him marrying an Australian beauty was the icing on the cake.

Love Billy's storytelling and sense of the ridiculous 😊 BTW, the bush and the desert aren't exactly the same thing. 'The bush' usually refers to grasslands with eucalyptus trees. Even in the centre of Australia (informally known as the Red Centre) there are eucalyptus trees and bushes, and they do get substantial rain occasionally (check out vids of Uluru during a downpour) so it's not all a true desert.

As many Aussies have Scottish DNA, Aussies understand and can totally relate to his sense of humour. We love him soooo much that he will always be welcome here with open arms, and sellout concerts.

Saw him 13 times down here between 1984 and 2015, and at some point at every single one of those shows - I was absolute rubble. His "prescription windscreen" story just about killed me. 🤣

I love this sketch, used to watch it with my step grandfather who moved to Aus from Scotland at 15 in 1947. We'd have a scotch and laugh our arses off. I miss him so bloody much.

I was born in Townsville. So many people used to swim across to Magnetic Island - about 13kms off the coast (8 miles). And many people would swim in the ocean. There was a rock pool on the Strand then but they have improved everything a lot and there are safe pools to swim in at the ocean's edge. It's not the kind of sun you go into if you are pale, like me. I used to burn in 15 minutes. We love Billy. He was actually kicked out of Australia because of his swearing in the 70s, but welcomed back in the 80s. Times change. Most Australians love him. As he got older his shows had a lot of anger in them, which put me off. He would go on rants about women's equality or whatever and it was an argument rather than humorous. It may have been early manifestations of his Parkinson's, which causes dementia as well. Very sad to see him deteriorate these days. Micheal Parkinson said last year that Billy asked him how long he had known him. Still, he made it to 80 and he has the money for the best treatments, so hopefully his life will be as comfortable as possible.

he is right with everything he says including the 'desert with one bush'.. as a child my parents used to drive from the west to the east annually across the nullabor and every trip was the same (the road houses often didn't have toilets - they were 44 gallon drums of 'refuse' stinkin in the heat and flies bouncing off the corrugated iron shed,) anyway none of us kids would use them (tyre for a toilet seat) so we'd drive and eventually dad would have to stop. Three kids running for the horizon for the one tree to 'go behind' all sprinting to get there first with toilet rolls trailing behind us.
