As an Australian, I am slightly embarrassed that we have claimed some New Zealand bands & artists as Aussies. Dragon is a Kiwi band as was Split Enz. As Split Enz morphed in Crowded House it became an ANZAC band with a mixture of Kiwis & Aussies. Both Australia & New Zealand punch above their weight in both music & acting given our small populations.

I still remember a few pubs you could still get great bands at and that whole great easy vibe well into the 00's but then suddenly nothing. That era was over. Now they have terrible music and I guess bands who have truly great talent have nowhere to make a start

If a band does play in such a setting it'd most likely be in a "Tavern" that allows children, the music'd be rubbish and people would be having their lunch or playing the pokies. Anyway, if there was a good pub to watch a great band of a night time my guess the patrons would be misbehaving, high on pills and not really there for the music but to be seen..

What he doesn’t know and I think many others also may not know is that our singing voice in English doesn’t usually give away our accent. It only becomes recognisable when we speak. This doesn’t always happen when a foreigner sings in English, e.g. a native French speaker. Colin Hay definitely loses his Scottish accent when he’s singing.

Some of these are from New Zealand. Neill Finn, a New Zealander, also wrote Crowded House songs. We are not the same countries although a lot of our bands do go to Australia for more exposure.

Late to the party here but this missed the best of Aussie Rock from the 80's. Screaming Jets, Paul Kelly, Hoodoo Gurus, The Church, GangGajang, Yothu Yindi... to name a few. I was glad to see Slim Dusty included. Cant get anymore iconic than him. ❤

That's a great list of bands, but I'd urge you to check out Cold Chisel, the Angels, and the Divinyls. Plenty of others, but Cold Chisel were the biggest band in Australia in the early 1980s. For some reason they never made it overseas.

'I was Only 19' is the most amazing commentary, in song, on the Vietnam War, war in general and PTSD. And a reflection, in general, of the age of so many soldiers that end up in the armed forces. !n 1988, when Australia was celebrating the Bicentary, we had a huge number of naval ships in our harbour. I was going out with a bass player whose band played in Kings Cross, Sydney and I met a lot of sailors. A huge number were from the US and they were almost all between 18-21. And they were lucky as there were no wars at the time.

Bon Scott, the original singer with ACCADACCA is buried in Fremantle cemetery. They installed a gate near his grave for easy access. There's also a statue of him in Fremantle. Yes, you should def check out "I Was Only 19".

I saw AC/DC play with Bon Scott at a local Western Australian beachside hotel back in 1973. Saw quite a few of these bands in pub sessions back in the 1970s, including Icehouse (the guy singing "you must be crazy...") and Slim Dusty back in 1971. Cost .50c to get in to see him. That was in Esperance, WA

Yeah nah, he's not buried in Freo cemetery but there is a memorial to him in there. He's actually buried in a private location known only to his family.

As another poster had said, Bon is not buried in Freo cemetary. He has a plaque in the lawn section, there is a memorial gate from the main road into that part of the cemetary, and his family donated a seat nearby for people to sit. I visit it often as parents and in-laws are in the same cemetary. There's always little tokens left behind - cans and bottles. There's a new movie bio being made in Australia about him. Should be great.

Divinyls were a real quality band. Their music stands the test of time, and they still have a following internationally, despite Chrissie Amphlett's passing, RIP. There are many serious musicians all over the world who admire the Divinyls.

Ditto. I turned 18 in 1991 so the 80s was my teen tears. I remember all these songs even the Jason Donovan ones. Ah the 80s where people didn't go out on Saturday nights, or they did but only after watching Hey Hey it's Saturday. Most of these artists were probably on that show at some point.

Great listening to all these again, thanks. I was a teenager in the early 80’s so this was a trip down memory lane. Ryan you should listen to all the songs in full, many are just greats.

Jason Donovan took the ride with Kylie because they were costars in an Aussie soap BUT none of us took him seriously😂

​@@linmal2242The main thing with Kylie was she broke away from the teeny bopper music and adapted. Her music grew as her audience did. So she is doing different stuff now to the beginning, and you don't feel embarrassed if you listen to her now or followed her then. Very clever marketing. Many artists are too stubborn to change for their audience but Kylie did.

Yep, AC/DC sure are Australian. In 2001, I won $500 USD in a pub in Beardstown Illinois, from a loud mouthed American who refused to believe it. He never argued with me again after that 😂🤣😂🤣

Came across your channel today, watched the cop and the biker clip. Then I watched this 80's clip, I've seen quite a few of these bands. Cold Chisel with front man Jimmy Barnes was and still is massive, you've got him twice in your clip, I'm going to his August concert. I was waiting with bated breath for Australian Crawl with front man James Reyne which appeared once. Australian Crawl (Aussie Crawl) was massive, James Reyne is currently doing his Crawl File Tour and I'm going to his October concert. A great band called Rose Tattoo with front man Angry Anderson didn't make the list but are really worth listening to, they were the first band I saw in a smoky-filled establishment.

Also slim dusŕy did a song in the 80s called gday gday where hè sang a portion with his grand daughter. You also missed run to paradise by the choitboys

Love how you enjoyed this, I did too. Your collection included lots of NZ songs as well - Split Enz, Dave Dobbyn. Crowded House is both AUS and NZ. I’m a Kiwi and very proud of our music industry, but Australia has some absolute powerhouse artists. We are well spoilt with awesome local music.

You know Olivia Newton-John, she was Sandy, the female lead in Grease. Check out John Farnham with the Melbourne symphony orchestra doing 'Help'. You can use the song, comment/react with stopping the song a couple of times. I have observed other channels who react to songs. Australia has some fantastic musicians, song writers and bands in the world.

Thanks Ryan for a trip down memory lane. I went to a lot of these bands concerts and/or more likely pubs when they were little known and therefore happened to know some of them personally. There was a huge jump in live music in Australia when start ups could play 'anywhere and everywhere' and I was there. Then they became famous! The late 70's and early 80's was a place to be back then. It was a phenomenal time to be involved in the the music scene! It was probably the most exciting time of my life...

Locomotion was Kylie’s first stand out single when she was catapulted into stardom then moved to the UK where the British made her a superstar

It's quite interesting that the Australian accent comes through so well in Men at Work's songs - the lead singer was Scottish :-)

I was only 19 by Red Gum you should really do a vid on and more of these. You can play the songs just stop once or twice during it and talk about it. Then you won't get demonetised.

I never knew Joe Dolce could be counted as Australian. He played an Italian in a British sitcom called 'Mind Your Language ' about a class of adults learning English as a second language. Shaddap Your Face famously kept Vienna by Ultravox off the number one spot in the British Top Ten.

I loved Dragon from new Zealand but mived to Sydney we loved that band still do, the kead singer died if throat cancer poor guy sad 😔 really nice guy too. R. I. P Mark hunter !❤🎉😢

Kylie actually moved her central home back to Australia a couple of years back... she's just rarely in it since she spends a lot of time in Vegas lately for her residency.

I remember that The Swingers song playing a lot, it’s a classic over here for sure! It’s been used in heaps of our adverts and football games too 😂

He revived his career in the last 70s/early 80s. He’d been a heartthrob in the early 70s, kept performing but didn’t have a BIG hit for quite a while. Still going, still loved.

Never liked "The Voice". The line 'with the power to be powerful' - just awful, and deeply naïve. Power always means the power to make other people do as you say, powerfulness always means powerlessness for someone else, and cannot mean anything else. I prefer "Age of Reason".

It was a big hit there and all throughout Europe and became a catalyst for the destruction of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany in 1989. Just as well we don’t all have the same taste in music.

Easybeats were great! They had lots of hits...I still rate "Friday on my Mind" as one of the top ten Aussie songs. The collective skill set of the Young brothers was amazing. Angus is a dead set LEGEND. RIP George and Malcolm. 😢

I'm Australian and I didn't know Rick Springfield was Australian. I do know that Dave Dobbyn is a Kiwi, not Australian. I also know that there was no way Jason Donovan was that popular, he was just famous for playing Kylie Minogue's boyfriend on TV. There are a lot of bands missing from that list, including ones that were well known overseas.

The 1980s were the golden years of Australian music. Iva Davies from Icehouse is an incredibly talented musician. Classically trained oboist. David Bowie once said, if he didn't have his own voice, he'd have Iva Davies' voice.

I think Iva’s version of Bowie’s “heroes” is one of the best cover songs ever done. Iva is an amazing composer too.

I remember seeing Madonna wearing a Kylie t-shirt 20yrs ago. Little River Band we’re an act at Vegas for years ( ur mum might know them) I also noticed many of our artist weren’t singing their big hits. Even the BeeGees made it in Aussie first. Their younger brother Andy was born here but the drugs got him. He actually went out with a girl from my school…..

Crazy facts: AC/DC used to play the Sunday afternoon session at my local pub [Leederville Hotel] in Perth, Western Australia. The music was just as iconic then as it is now; the session was always packed. The 'Highway to Hell' song is about a stretch of the Canning Highway between one pub they played at [the Raffles Hotel, Applecross] and another pub in Fremantle. They would drive from one to the other between gigs and usually 'downing a few' beers... hence, highway to hell.

My dad worked at the family hotel as a barman in the late 70s and 80s in Sydney. He got to know all the bands before they were big. We had an autograph book with a lot of the lead singers signatures in it. It's long gone now

And Russel the lead singer from Air Supply worked at Radio Rentals in Artarmon in Sydney doing office work.. he was so quiet… he played in a local band and eventually got noticed when he applied for a part in a stage play which is where he met the tall blond American … they clicked and formed the group Air Supply and the rest is history

John Farnham has retired but he’s a living legend here at home. We all love him to bits! He’s the best example of an Aussie Larrikin you’ll find anywhere! 🇦🇺❤️❤️❤️. There are many reactions to his songs on YT and since you seem not to know who he is, (he’s remained loyal to Australia since the late sixties), you should look for everything you can find, learn his songs and enjoy them for the rest of your life! He has an amazing vocal range and a voice that can handle any genre. Jimmy Barnes, former lead singer of Cold Chisel, and John have sung together a few times and their voices merge into a phenomenon! Read comments on videos so you can learn even more from fans who know and love these guys, especially John! Watch lots of interviews with John too, so you get to know who he is as a human being! 🥰🥰🥰🇦🇺

I remember many years ago, I attended one of his concerts and after the show ended, everyone made their way to the carpark out the back of the venue, a multi-storey carpark, but not many left, most of us stayed and waited for John to exit the building because we wanted to cheer for him one last time. We waited, and waited, and finally, out he came, and the entire carpark erupted with cheers, whistles and applause. John stood there and accepted it all, for a couple of minutes, and then he began to signal us so we would stop. His finger went up to his lips 🤫🤫 and he kept lowering his hands until there was absolute silence. At the top of his lungs, he shouted, “THANK YOU!!!” And we all cheered again! I think everyone’s heart was on fire, I know mine was! This guy had just spent the last couple of hours singing, joking and interacting with us from the stage, and we wanted to love him! He allowed us to do that and then thanked us sincerely! I pray for his full recovery and a blessed retirement. God bless you, John! 🙏🥰🇦🇺

The video for Bop Girl by Pat Wilson featured a young Nicole Kidman. The song was written by her then husband, Ross Wilson, lead singer of Mondo Rock.

Olivia Newton John was Sandy in Grease. She was a good friend of John Travolta until her death.

It's rubbish. I'm as Australian as anyone, but cannot stand John Farnham's music. Yes, he's a nice guy. But I'm so sick of that song it actually makes me angry. I hate it with a passion. Whenever the fucking bagpipes kick in I want to set his mullet on fire. I imagine he can't stand the song these days too.

Kylie is now doing Vegas as far as I know from last year she is booked out until June.
