Does anyone remember Johnny Lange about 15 years ago? He was this young kid who played and sang the blues so well he gained instant respect and acceptance from the blues community. He loved blues as a kid, pursued blues guitar and singing and ended up writing some great blues original songs. He just had a natural feel for it, stemming from an early childhood exposure and appreciation. I submit that Angelina is the same; and her singing voice, a gift from God, she has magnified magnificently.

It just seems impossible that a 12 year old could pour this much soul into a song, but there it is. I agree that there is a lot more to singing than just having a good voice. I think one of the things that makes Angelina so special is that she doesn't just sing it... she feels it first, and then expresses that feeling with her incredible voice in her own unique way. Angelina is never just singing a song. She is always creating a piece of art. All those little details (like that "rather" that you picked up on) make her like no other singer I have ever heard.

This little experimental performance at home sitting on her couch is a vocal masterpiece, IMO. Some of her runs in this are insane & her rasp & vocal fry are off the charts. Talk about breath control, listen to that run from 7:47-8:03 in one breath. That should be impossible & I'm sure it is for 99% of vocalists, but not for Angelina. This is mind blowing for anyone, but for a 12 yo, it's epic! When singers try to cover Angelina in the future, they will be forced to come up with their own rendition because they won't be able to replicate much of what she does.

"I'd Rather Go Blind" - Etta James (1968). Young Angelina has covered a ton of old jazz classics most kids do not even know exist. Jazz was her first love and window into the music world. When she won Norway's Got Talent at age 7, it was by singing old Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra songs. Her ability to channel those old artists and credibly capture the tenor of the age with emotional conviction is what led many to start calling her an "old soul" from a very young age.

As you probably already know Dave, Angelina, from a very early age (1 1/2) was exposed to Jazz/Blues by her Grandma Mery Zamani. This is a Great Etta James (R&B/Soul/Blues) song released in 1968. Angelina has absorbed these great jazz/blues singers into her soul (Etta, Bill Holiday, Aretha ) to name a few and though she can sing ANYTHING, Jazz is still apart of her as evident in her new release of 7th Heaven. This song will take you further down the Angelina Rabbit hole....just enjoy the trip and keep up the great reactions to the Angel.

I absolutely have delved into Your rabbit hole. Your reactions are stellar! She actually did her first studio recording at 6. I who Have Nothing... Last done by Tom Jones Her singing was already way ahead of her time. You should react to that, and then her four NGT performances at 7. You may have heard that Angelina is known as the barefoot princess of 1,000 voices. This is one of those voices that is very distinct from some of her others. She has the innate ability to adjust the tone, style, phrasing, to coincide with the song and artist she is singing. She is not imitating, but respecting the original artist. This particular song was done by Etta James, one of the great Legends of jazz, blues, and soul. Her voice here is in line with Etta, but it is pure Angelina. She does other songs that are Any Winehouse like.. (Back to Black, Rehab, Valerie) No other young singer I have ever heard can do this and that's what sets Angelina apart.

Angelina Jordan is the most spectacular music artist of the whole world nowadays, due to several factors. First of all, her voice which is unmatched, unbeatable ,melodic, mesmerizing, magnificent , majestic and full of soul, and jazzy and in second place , she is such a Humble person as it is up to now, getting to every body's heart ; ever since she was a child (an infant) has shown that the beauty of a person can be in her own attitude, taking as example her kindness toward another child by her age, where poverty was not an insuperable wall to trespass to support and help another human been, that kind of dignity only can be find in a pure soul . And Because of that there are not many words to express the whole beauty she puts in her renditions, AJ is in a superior level ,above all of the other performers,no doubt about it. Thanks for the reaction.

And don't forget "My Funny Valentine". He's a jazz guy. He can handle it. [wink] Dave, there's a live-on-stage (or maybe more like portico - anyway, outdoors) version at age 9 and a live-at-home version at 10 (and also a rehearsal at 8, but I don't think that's really in the running). Personally, I prefer the outdoors version, but some people object to the piano player's antics in that one. (I'm hoping you can inform those people that he's doing _exactly_ what he's supposed to be doing. :) Also, admittedly, the sound is a bit muffled in the outdoors one, and the indoors one (sung over an instrumental track, of course) has the added benefit of having her speak before and after the song, showing the _crazy_ contrast between her speaking and singing voice. Oh, hell… just do both. [grin] They should be super easy to find with a search (YT channels "Aksept Senter for alle berørt av hiv" [translation: "Acceptance Center for everyone affected by HIV" - it was a charity performance to benefit them] and "Boris Palenovski", respectively).

Don’t forget her “Gloomy Sunday” Norway’s Got Talent audition. Unbelievable, amazing, and incredible. Her technique has improved from then till now and she obviously has a child’s voice which was immature especially when you see where her voice is today. Even so, that audition performance has a lot if the details we expect only in older singers. Thank goodness the people around her and her family including both her parents abd grandmother have both protected her and allowed Angelina to vocally and to artistically grow and prosper. I think 🤔 it helped that her grandmother is an artist and gave good advise to her parents plus she also exposed Angelina to great music from early in her life so picking that song for her audition just flowed from her experience.

@@Jason_xofilos You're right, I even think you're understating here. Gloomy Sunday is the moment that changed everything, no singer today could sing it like that. However, Angelina discovered "Gloomy Sunday" herself when she couldn't sleep one night and got to borrow her mother's iPad, and she saw this lady screaming into the sky ... music history.

You talked about talent vs. the ability to use it (or something like that). Personally, I use the following framework to think about why/how she is such a good singer (used to be 3 things, now 4… probably more in the future): 1. anatomy - AKA the voice, per se (somehow her vocal tract is optimized to generate a beautiful sound) 2. control - i.e., the ability to control her voice, in terms of pitch and (changes to) timbre, etc. (timbre also is part of #1, of course, but it wouldn't be as impactful if she couldn't modify it at will) 3. technique - the ability to use her control in specific ways to achieve specific results (vocal fry, belting, etc. - again, modification of timbre is a large part of this, but whatever…) 4. artistry - the understanding of what techniques are appropriate at what times, to achieve the desired (usually emotional) effect (i.e., in the listener) That's the best I can do. I can't explain _why_ she excels in all of these aspects, although obviously training has a lot to do with #2 and #3, and presumably her upbringing has a lot to do with #4. I just know that everything on the list is crucial to making her a _phenomenally_ good singer. I suppose #5 should be empathy or enlightenment [heh], or something? Hmm…

That was such a description of this performance, there is so much going on here, but at the end of the day it just lifts my spirits and take me on an emotional journey. How can such a young person do this: How good can it get when she matures - say as a 21 year old - the world had better brace itself for what is to come - the water gate will open and beautiful songs will flow out...

She’s doing those pauses because it adds character and interest to the song making it stand out, and sounds so cool? Socket it to me, Angelina!

Thank you 😊💕 for you're reaction Dave 👍. I understood what you meant with clarity... She is unique, and yes she does have a sound like Amy Winehouse, she sings her version of Amy's Back to Black beautifully. Thanks again, be safe 👍💞

I think you've fallen for our angel :-) Yes, Angie has been compared to Amy Winehouse continuously by reactors. Angie has covered Amy in "Valerie: "Rehab" "Back To Black" (I'd give links but my comments disappear when I do for some reason). The vocal fry used by Angelina here is beyond belief. Many fans say she was just experimenting. Sure, she never stops exploring her capabilities. Of course Angie is known to have "a thousand voices." An exaggeration, sure, but she has an arsenal of vocal styles, and this is one of them. I'm looking forward to more of your descent down the rabbit hole :-)

"fly Me to the moon" live stream version. She was 10yrs old. Amgelina's background is in jazz. She listened and studied video's on KZread!! Her grandmother played jazz when she was growing up. There is a video from a program in Norway showing baby Angelina, microphone in hand actually singing to Whitney Houston singing "I will always love you" in ENGLISH!!!! Only a few words but she was singing not just random baby talk.

I got tickled yesterday when I saw you react to this. I just couldn't leave a comment because I was working. This is one of my favs by Angelina. I love her earlier stuff a lot but I get excited to see her new stuff. That's like her "I'm a fool to want you" she does that at age 7 but does it again at age 13 in the studio. I love listening to this beautiful soul. ♥️♥️

Learning your ability to do anything at very young age is super rare. It's amazing when people can do that. I learned in my senior year that I could write poems. Even anonymously posted a few up for the school. I could always write beyond what most were capable of. But it took me until senior year to find out that my calling was poetic writings. So glad she found out so damn early.

When most people do covers, they try to duplicate the original artist's performance. Not Angelina. She makes the song hers. If I was a superstar singing artist, I wouldn't want Angelina to cover me. Because she always does it better, without disrespecting the original, and she always makes me cry.

When Angelina decides to break out the vocal fry it is like a southern style six-foot long deep fat fryer. It has hush puppies at one end baskets of french fries, breaded catfish filets, baskets of breaded oysters and even some chicken. So much deliciousness in one place. Just like Angelina's voice.

Love the watergate analogy, I know exactly what your taking about. Grate breakdown Bro. The holding back but partly letting go of the notes is something she is doing with the rasp & Vibrato as well.. crazy control over the dynamic of her Voice. To all the singers out there, try to do that rasp with Vibrato at the same time, you will see how difficult this is.. Her rendition of Autumn leaves is a masterclass at this.

It’s funny when you said that about Tennessee Whiskey, there’s a mashup by Kaleidoscope RMX of Chris Stapleton ft. Angelina Jordan that is truly amazing. Check it out. The only thing that would be better would be adding Angelina to the jam that Chris and Justin Timberlake did at the CMA Awards a couple of years ago. Check that out and imagine adding Angelina singing I’d rather go blind and the three of those geniuses jamming for about 5-8 minutes with Chris’s singing and guitar, Justin’s beautiful falsetto and Angelina’s vocal wizardry. I think we’d all go mad with aural pleasure. By the way, I love your reactions and look forward to hearing you play the saxophone. It’s one of my favorite instruments.

Great reaction again, voice coach Cecci Dover explained it as “cutting” her words and phrases making her vocals as well as her delivery unique. I’ve seen some songs she practiced at a very young age, still a work in progress she’ll deliver it when she’s ready, when it’s perfect..

The stops she does are called glottal stops. It's a way of using your tongue to stop or shut off and on the flow of air coming from your lungs. You keep the pressure from your lungs steady but stop and start the air flow. It's like a faucet; the water pressure in the pipes remains constant and you turn off and on the valve. When you stop the water flow with the faucet the pressure in the pipes remain the same.
