The reason I watch others react to this song is exactly what you said: "I'm sad because now I can't hear it for the first time." Yea. She is everything in this performance. She kills it. But that's the genius of Scott Bradlee's arrangement - you can tell it was written for her talents specifically - it drops away to give her the space to be soft, anticipates her when she builds up some power, and then supports her when she really lets loose. Everything about this is amazing.

Well I know you've reacted to her before but dam, welcome to Haley's world. But before I go, please raise a glass to Scott Bradlee for being able to take these contemporary songs and retro arrange them into such wonderful pieces (and to the outstanding musicians he assembles to play them).

PMJ was in the middle of their Euro tour and had a 2-3 day break. They traveled to Switzerland, recorded this in one take, while Haley was fighting off a cold. It is a masterpiece.

One more item of the day PMJ recorded " Creep" in Switzerland, Scott Bradlee looked up in the sky after the recording and saw a comet. He called it "Haley's Comet". It is in his book he wrote about Post Modern Jukebox startup.

  • @iarocks44

She was not fighting off a cold. Not sure how that got started. Based on Scott Bradley, Haley was worried her voice would be tired from touring and they had just recorded Seven Nation Army and All About that Bass that same day. He convinced her they could get it in one take. And they did. But contrary to rumor she was not sick or getting sick. She was simply worried about her voice since she had been singing so much.

Haley has really transformed. The best way I can express it is that I've been a working musician for a long time. Back years ago I was in a twelve piece band with horn section etc. I remember auditioning female vocalists. Most sounded like they were trying to sound like singers as opposed to being one. I didn't know where Haley came from. It turns out she was on American Idol. I looked at a couple of her performances and wasn't impressed. I got that same vibe of her imitating singers. But with PMJ she has found her voice and it's incredible. So is her performance attitude. Sometimes just being around the kind of talent that makes up PMJ can force you to step up your game.

This version charted on Billboard's digital Jazz charts for over 50 weeks. You have stated in the past that you auditioned for America Idol, what year was it? Haley was on the live shows summer of 2011. so I don't know if those initial auditions would have been fall 2010 or winter/spring 2011. She ended up in third after starting off as one of the lower ranked vote getters. She had no chance really, as the eventual winner was a teen boy country singer with a deep voice that got the tween girl and granny vote. Many women/girls were turned off by Haley's sultryness, some commented she was not appropriate for a family show LOL, she was very tame compared to many today. Haley toured with PMJ for awhile back in 2015 and 2016. Her version of I Can't Help Falling in Love with You was used in a gum add and went viral, probably her single biggest money maker to date.

Thanks for the great information on Haley's American Idol experience. As for American Idol, don't trust the voting process for the winners; there's a lot of manipulation there. Pentatonix lead singer Scott Hoying auditioned for AI three times and was rejected all three times. Their goal is ratings, not necessarily talent. Now that he's famous, they'd take him in a New York second because he would attract many viewers.

LOL. I L-O-V-E hearing, watching, seeing anything I've loved for years and years, only to realize that I've never understood it, heard it, absorbed it before until a new light, a new angle, a new voice reveals what's been hiding in plain sight for however long. That's what her rendition of this masterpiece does to me, again and again. I never felt the delicious yearning and surrender of the lyrics until I heard this, the realization that sometimes you're just never going to get something you've dreamt of your whole life, assumed would one day come, until that bubble pops and your hopes and desires vanish, forever, and it's OK. If not you, someone you love (or perhaps will never know) will have it for you. And your heart explodes. BOOM! Gone. So THIS is Nirvana! Astonishing. To how many things in life does that word TRULY apply? 💥💖🔥

She's done... "7 nation army" ...excellant "Nothing But The Bass" WONDERFUL and others. She also does 50's music. And she's written a few. Her best is with PMJ they sound perfect together. And others.

Maunalee - Thank God! I finally found someone who loves it as much as I do! But guess what? If you are like me.... well.... I have watched it about 50 times in the past couple of months and it still gives me goosebumps, elevates my heart rate, and leaves me with a gasp at the end and I felt like I was with you on the ride with each of your facial expressions. It is a vocal masterpiece.

I like to see people, and they are few, who recognize moments that hit the feels. The end isn't a minor. It's like a flat five with a nine. The arrangements of PMJ are from an era where musicians were trained, mostly classically. It wasn't a time of push one key on a synthesizer and you were done. You needed to understand music structure, theory etc. I've been a life long musician who thinks of music as mathematical art. There are certain equations that effect the human brain in various ways. They were good at pulling those strings because they knew how. Some today carry on those traditions.

This song only gets better each time i listen to it... and i discovered this beautiful cover years ago and heard it countless times.. goosebumps are still very common for me to get when i hear Haley sing this (and other songs). Her voice is.. for a lack of better wording, magical, she's the complete package of voice, sultry, looks, moves, performance, presence, storytelling and captivation for me, she is simply unique. And to think that there are 3 major factors at play here, first.. this was after a long night performing, when they came back to the mansion Scott felt there was time for one more recording. Second would be, as mentioned, after a long day performing Haley was dead tired, and hear say tells she also wasnt physically feeling well. And finally, they did this in 1 or 2 takes, debate on that is still ongoing if its only once or twice that they did it and called it a job (well) done. Regardless if its one take, or the second take.. she slayed it while being under the weather and tired as can be from a long night on stage... she still has this when not being at 100% capacity, she is amazing. I am new to your channel but have recently been on a binge of Haley Reinhart reacts so your videos started to show up in my recommended, and ty KZread for having an algorithm that actually works, so i could find this (for me) new channel to sub to. Ty for the lovely react Maunalee (love that name btw, never heard it before but it fits you perfectly)

Her hip and hand movements, touching her hair, and the little head flip all add to the picture she's painting. Also, every chorus is different the way she sings it

Scott Bradlee (at the piano does all the arrangements) also works with the singers such as Haley Reinhart here and Morgan James from Postmodern Jukebox, both sing in a great rendition of "All About the Bass". Then look up Morgan James by herself.

Haley's PMJ Creep is my Favorite Video on youtube. I listen to it at least once a day. and she did Don't Speak with PMJ perfectly, which should be your next video. This video is the reason I started listening to Reactions on youtube because of it. Had no idea what Reaction videos were until this video.

Yeah, Haley kills it in this video. Scott’s arrangement really allows her to soar. BTW, she and both Casey Abrams & Puddles the Pity Clown we’re in the top 10 for American Idol one year with Haley coming in 3rd. I haven’t heard anything from the winner of that year, but these three I have.
