The band was not signed when they made this music video, song, or the album it comes from (Demons of the AstroWaste, their second album). All independent here. Showcases how good they are, even back then - and yes, this is from 2011. This album and their first one (Behold the Devastation), were a lot more on the melodeath side than the power metal side. They had more screaming because Brayden, the other guitarist here, did screaming vocals as well as Grant. Brayden left the band after this album was released, so their sound definitely shifted.

I would love it if you react to The Wind That Shapes The Land by Unleash The Archers. It's another one of their masterpieces, currently my joint favourite from them with Dreamcrusher and Time Stands Still, but beyond that it takes you on a journey. From start to finish, it's constantly changing and evolving and feels like they have perfectly blended the best parts of 3 or 4 songs together seamlessly. Part of me hates that they didn't make one of their epic story time videos to go with it, but on the other hand the lack of visual stimulus forces you to really focus on the sounds and it's so worth it.

You can immediately tell that back this far they're using less synth and other fancy studio stuff, but it's no less clean, no less technical, and no less awesome than anything else they've done. They've aged well. Love the video, going to keep watching. Also this isn't in your UTA reaction playlist! It really should be, it's one of the best!

Great analysis as always!! The main reason that there are more harsh vocals is that the band started out with a more death metal element and they moved from the harsh vocals being primary to being secondary as they evolved. The guitarist on the left is Brayden, , a primary songwriter, who was a founding member who left about the time they signed with Napalm to get his realtors license. An article I read said he left due to the costs and when they signed with Napalm he realized it was going to be a Profitable hobbyand he didn’t want to live on Ramen Anymore.

I could be wrong but it looked like both the guitarist and drummer were joining that first "GENERAAAAL" scream. Loved your insights as usual. Very excellent timing. Wonderful stamina from the vocalist. Amazing driving rhythm. Not just lyrics but telling a story - in this case a tragedy. Lots more screams was great to see. Wonderful technicality. It's been an absolute joy to see how this band has grown throughout the years. I've been listening to them since 2015 (hopped on during the Time Stands Still cycle), and it's very clear that their first two releases favor the melo-death sound and their newer stuff is much more inline with traditional heavy metal/power metal, but it's nice that you can still always sense the effects of their death metal roots.

I’m glad you got around to reacting to this. It’s truly a classic! I’d like to see you react to “The Serpent’s Kiss” or “Laying the Demon to Rest” by Theocracy. They’re a Christian metal band, but their music sounds like great power metal and the lyrics have a lot more depth to them than most Christian rock bands. “Laying the Demon to Rest” in particular has some great heavy moments and a lot of fast moments to make a great contrast. Plus, the album which “The Serpent’s Kiss” comes from is produced entirely by one guy! He did all the vocals, guitars, and drums along with the sound engineering. The production quality sounds amazing!

Really digging your reactions man, great stuff! You've helped me to appreciate songs I already love evem more, as well as introduce to new great bands. Here are a couple other power metal recommendations that are a bit different (not sure what you have or have not listened to, but I'll take some stabs. Heh.) Kamelot: Forever (live) - This band has to be on the must review list if you haven't listened to them before. This is with their old singer, Roy Khan, who I preferred though the new guy is good in his own right. Blind Guardian: Voice in the Dark (music video) - This is another storytelling band. They are metal bards. Some realy good live videos to check out as well (Bards Song and Valhalla in one video is particularly good, some of the best crowd interaction you'll see) Beast in Black: From Hell With Love (music video) - Amazingly cheesy power metal done right. Yannis Papadopoulos is a fantastic vocalist. He does a vocal cover of Ghost Love Score that is pretty neat as well, if that gives you an idea on what his vocal range is like. Lost Horizon: Highlander (The One) - This is a song of legends. Pretty sure the day I listened to this for the first time was the day I became a man. It's a 12 minute song and the buildup to the glorious vocal work in the final few minutes will hit you hard.

Putting in a request for Native Construct - Mute. Native Construct put out their concept Album "Quiet World" in 2015 and despite it being their only album before the band split, it's still extremely highly regarded as a prog metal masterpiece. If you were thinking of longer form album reactions, this is the one to start.

there is no woman vocalist she reminds me of, but I do hear Dio in her, in the very best way. what an amazing singer. the whole band are marvelous, and nicely put together, but man, you don't see singers like that often.

Brittney has said they wanted the General to come out and attack them during a live performance but they couldn't make it work because the helmet would fall off. Please react to "The Wind that Shapes the Land" - it's my favorite track from Abyss. Also yes, as the owner of a Peavey 6505+ half stack, I do NOT envy whoever had to drag that cab into the woods.

i keep bouncing around for favorites from Abyss but "Wind" is epic in every sense of the word. the part in the middle where the immortal goes forth to fight "Forward I push on into the storm surrounding me . I await her strike..." gets me so pumped!

Chase, you should react to Maximum The Hormone. They are an older prog metal band from Japan and are HUGE. Any of their songs are good, but I'd recommend you start with Buiikikaesu. Here is a link because you aren't likely to find the original video on youtube. www.dailymotion.com/video/x79g4k3 Thank you for all the great reactions and music breakdowns!!!

Chase, congratulations! Most reactors don't catch the meaning of the general's flashback. His words as he drives the sword through are: "Retribution is forever." Here's some live UTA. It's from 2015, they're real green, but it's good quality audio. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jIKszrOJdaq6dqQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIumxMahpqutkbw.html

don't get me wrong, I love both Apex and Abyss albums as being their newer stuff, but sometimes I just have to listen to a heavier older song like this one. The actual music video from this song and from Cleanse the Bloodlines are probably my two favorite videos that they've made
