There’s a neat bit of…storytelling? Direction? Something, anyway. Wish I could say I spotted it myself, but someone else pointed it out to me. When SHIELD gets Banner, Stark, and Cap, pay attention to how they do it; specifically, how they’re briefed. For Banner, the data’s on a cell phone Natasha gives him, which isn’t terribly interesting. Stark gets it in a format he can load in the big ass computer he uses for everything else. Cap? Fury gives Cap a hard copy in a Manila folder, because that’s what they were using in the 40’s; it’s what he’s used to. Good stuff.

There’s a deleted scene of Steve adjusting to life in New York, with him at a restaurant, and that blonde girl was his waitress, and she does some flirting with him, which is why get all the later scenes with her, including her recognizing Cap as that nice guy from the restaurant.

This movie is a logistical triumph. So many people brought together in such an unprecedented way. People make fun of DC's failure to replicate the MCU, but they were also trying to remake a classic story from the comics which was a bridge too far. Here they just made a story that would work around numerous big star names in a way that told a remarkably coherent story. The fact that Marvel Studios kept the franchise running for as long as they did before it imploded under egos and incompetence is a remarkable achievement.

Funniest moment in the whole first Avengers movie is Loki getting ragdolled by Hulk. Bottom line, non-negotiable. Even if I'm having a bad day, that moment never fails to make me laugh.

18:47 Now why did SHIELD have to bring Loki _here,_ of all places? This is where their finest minds are _meeting._ They don't have a warehouse, somewhere, far away from civilization, where he can just be secreted away and kept under watch until such time as he is _needed?_

  • @lazyperfectionist1

26:14 Now this development is puzzling. Agent Romanoff figured out that Loki's plan was to unleash the Hulk. Of course, we all understood, you turn him loose on an airborne launch platform, he could probably do a great deal of damage. _We_ understood it. _She_ understood it. She reported this to _someone._ Why, then, did they keep Banner on _board?_ Do they not have the option to _land_ the helicarrier? Do they not have _aircraft_ on board that can reach the ground? Do they not have _parachutes?_ Why are we seeing Loki's plan come to fruition if Agent Romanoff figured it out?

I remember when this came out, so many people were predicting it would collapse under the weight of all the star power and different characters. Now people forget that this interconnected universe was a risky experiment. It paid off big, which is why so many other studios tried to replicate the structure, but it was a huge risk.

Did you miss the final credit scene? It wasn't in the reaction. Sometimes there's more than one, and the one not covered here is relatively major foreshadowing. IIRC, one of the movies has four credit scenes.

the person you noticed at about 39:50, the one they keep cutting to, there's a deleted scene earlier in the movie where she flirts with Cap at the cafe where she works (she doesn't know he's Cap then, he's not in uniform). the shot you saw is her recognizing him in uniform. it's a sweet moment for Cap, but it doesn't really make sense without the first scene. never understood why they took that one out but left the others in...

when you find all of the Avengers, they're all doing what either their cosign says, or what keeps them "going". Cap? hes boxing bc he cant sleep and its in an old school gym where he feels comfortable & familiar. Stark? Upgrading the tech of his building & suit to grow with the times and needs of his newfound purpose. Romanov? She's interrogating a target using her brilliant technique of weaponising her femininity, which also works on Loki. Thor? He arrived after Loki's chaos. Hawkeye? He was up, like a hawk, overseeing operations and getting details that no one else but him could get. Banner? He was in India working as a nonprofit doctor helping the sick in a way that was far removed from any danger he could inflict upon innocent populations. They were all found in situations true to their characters.

In-universe timeline so far: "First Avenger" is from 1942-1945, "Agent Carter: Season 1" is in 1946, "Agent Carter One-Shot" is in 1947, Ang Lee's "Hulk" is from 2005-2006, "Iron Man" is in 2009, Fury's Big Week including "Iron Man 2", "Incredible Hulk" and "Thor" is in 2010, Cap is thawed in 2011 and "Avengers" is in 2012 with "Iron Man 3" occurring at year's end 2012. Hey, Courtney! "Avengers" was a game-changer and the proof of concept of Feige's grand plan! Team movies weren't anything new as we had already seen the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Mystery Men, Watchmen and the Incredibles in action by this point but a multi-franchise crossover event hadn't been done since the Universal horror cycle of the '40's and, certainly, not on a scale this immense! This movie is the very definition of a thrilling Hollywood blockbuster and it shattered every record! Who knew we were only being teed up for something even bigger? Marvel Comics assembled "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" in September 1963, the same month the X-Men debuted and two years after the Fantastic Four. Whereas the other groups were privately financed and comprised of members who were linked by blood or genes, the Avengers were a more motley crew subject to government oversight. Their headquarters was a mansion gifted to the team by Tony Stark located on 890 Fifth Avenue in New York City nestled on the eastern edge of Central Park complete with a butler named Jarvis to attend their needs. As in the movie, the team would travel around the globe in sleek compact planes called Quinjets. The five founding members were Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp and Hulk. The team found Captain America in the ice and thawed him out in the fourth issue. He was granted honorary founding status and has been with the group through almost every incarnation often leading as Chairman. As in the film, it was Loki's mischief that brought the heroes together whereupon they decided they should gather regularly to tackle any situation that was too much for any one them alone. Borrowing again from Marvel's alternate universe, the 1610 Ultimate Universe, the Chitauri are introduced as Loki's invasion force in the film since the Ultimate-equivalent of the Avengers united for the first time to battle that species. Credit goes to the Wasp's Janet van Dyne for coming up with their name, the Avengers. Over the years, the roster would rotate frequently as a diverse group of beings filled the ranks of the organization including humans, superhumans, mutants, inhumans, atlanteans, eternals, sorcerers, androids, aliens, demi-gods and deities. The team's battle cry was simple: "Avengers Assemble!" Joss Whedon was an ideal choice for director. Having cut his teeth on "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly", he understood how to ground fantasy and sci-fi with clashing team dynamics. As a comic book enthusiast and writer, he was well-versed with the Marvel sandbox and this movie hums under his sure hand. As this is a team movie, the cast is a bunch of familiar faces with a couple of new additions and everybody gets their moment to shine. Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark aka Iron Man, Gwyneth Paltrow as Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, Paul Bettany as JARVIS and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow carry over from the "Iron Man" films. Chris Hemsworth as Thor Odinson aka Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki Laufeyson aka Loki, Stellan Skarsgard as Dr. Erik Selvig and Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye carry over from "Thor". Chris Evans as Steve Rogers aka Captain America carries over from "The First Avenger". Samuel L. Jackson as Col. Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson and Maximiliano Hernandez as Agent Jasper Sitwell return as the faces of SHIELD with new addition Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, right-hand woman to Fury. Mark Ruffalo replaces Edward Norton as Bruce Banner aka Hulk but Lou Ferrigno remains on hand as the voice of Hulk. Powers Boothe and Jenny Agutter play World Security Council members who carry over into "Agents of SHIELD" as Gideon Malick and "Winter Soldier" as Hawley, respectively. Whedon alum Alexis Denisof plays the Chitauri spokesman known as The Other in heavy prosthetics who appears again in "Guardians of the Galaxy". Surprisingly, distinguished Polish writer-director-actor Jerzy Skolimowski pops up as corrupt Russian General Luchkov who gets outplayed by Natasha. Esteemed character actor Harry Dean Stanton has a wry bit as a custodian who witnesses the Hulk's transformation, New York character actor Robert Clohessy has a funny bit as an NYPD Sergeant who questions Cap's credentials, veteran character actor Kenneth Tigar has a moving bit as a defiant old German man, prolific character actor Jamie McShane has a quick televised bit as a celebratory bystander, all-American character actor Warren Kole plays a SHIELD tech on the helicarrier bridge and Ashley Johnson, the voice of Ellie in "The Last of Us", shows up as Beth, a grateful waitress. Enver Gjokaj, who would later be cast as Daniel Sousa in "Agent Carter" and "Agents of SHIELD", briefly appears in an unrelated role as a New York cop! TRIVIA: 1. Harry Dean Stanton was famously killed by the xenomorph in "Alien" so, when he asks a naked Bruce Banner if he's an alien, it's a tongue-in-cheek nod to his former role. 2. RDJ ad-libbed a lot of dialogue including the faux-Shakespeare routine with Thor, the "Galaga" quip on the bridge, the shawarma comment when he's revived and the character nicknames like Legolas for Hawkeye. 3. Mark Ruffalo ad-libbed the roar that awakens Tony from unconsciousness after he falls back to Earth. 4. Chitauri is Zulu for 'serpent race from the sky'. 5. Jeremy Renner was trained by Olympic archers in the use of his bow. 6. Shawarma sales skyrocketed after this movie! EASTER EGGS: 1. Loki's body temperature registers as blue on the infrared monitor trained on his cell because of his Frost-Giant physiology. 2. Odin's pet ravens Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory) fly past Thor and Loki on the outcrop after Loki is taken from the Quinjet. 3. One of the trading cards in Coulson's collectible set features the cover of "Captain America" # 1 which illustrates Cap socking Hitler on the jaw. 4. The mind-controlling Chitauri scepter makes its first appearance in the saga and is the second alien artifact of power to affect our heroes after the space-spanning Tesseract. CAMEO: 1. Stan Lee appears in a cameo as a chess-playing senior citizen who expresses disbelief about superheroes being active in New York. END-CREDIT SCENES: 1. The Other reports the Chitauri defeat to Thanos who smiles at the prospect of 'courting death'. This is Thanos' first appearance in the saga. His smile is a reference to his comic counterpart who actually is in love with the personification of Death. 2. The exhausted team gorges themselves on shawarma post-battle having taken Tony up on his suggestion. The next chronological stop in the MCU is the ONE-SHOT featurette called "ITEM 47" about Chitauri tech falling into the wrong hands. It is found on the "Avengers" blu-ray or on DPlus. Don't forget to watch it or the AGENT CARTER ONE-SHOT which can be paired with "Captain America: The First Avenger" or be viewed as a coda to the "AGENT CARTER" series. If you want to see "AGENT CARTER", the first 8-episode season is EXCEPTIONAL, occurs before the One-Shot and can be seen after "Avengers" as an interlude between phases. The "Man Out of Time" DELETED SCENE which includes Stan Lee should not have been cut from the film and is definitely worth a look!

12:07 I tend to think the helicarriers are pretty impressive, but they end up using them _very_ inefficiently. I mean, they work perfectly well on the _ocean_ as _aircraft_ carriers. It uses up a lot more power to make them _fly._ Now what's wrong with just using them as _aircraft_ carriers?
