the "I'll get older but your lovers stay my age" line is craaaazy cos she wrote it when she was like 21/22 (about ~30 year old Jake Gyllenhaal), released it like 10 years later at age 31/32 with Red (Taylor's Version) and Jake Gyllenhaal was 42 dating a ~24 year old. The part when she says "It's supposed to be fun turning 21" is quite literal. 'The Moment I Knew' is a song on Red that talks about her 21st birthday party that he didn't attend and that made her feel sad because it was an important moment of her life and she wanted him there. It is said that's one of the reasons the year later she made '22', to symbolize a different start to a whole new cycle. At least in this relationship we know that somehow she looked at it later with unbothered vibes as we know from 'I Bet You Think About Me'.

What would be cool is to continue the All too well story by listening to 'The moment I knew' which relates back to her 21st and then for laughs, 'I'll bet you think about me' a kind of parody of the whole situation. When this song first came out, any time she performed it she was visually angry and had tears in her eyes. This song was never a single when it came out with the album in 2012, but the fans and critics immediately fell in love with it and over the years she said multiple times how the fans changed this song for her. Now it's not this painful song that makes her tear up, its the song everyone screams at the top of their lungs

Taylor also wrote this after a long writer's block. When she finally was able to sit down with her words, they all just came spilling out of her in the ten minute version before Liz Rose helped her edit it down. The "crumpled up piece of paper" has always felt to me like her words that she couldnt get quite right and she felt disposable and like she was a mess from the break up. She also repeats "I was there. I remember it all too well" which might be because he constantly tried to gaslight her. She's ensuring him that she remembers it how it actually was

I love the ending of the 10 minute version of this song, cause as she says in one of the verses, he never called what they had "Love", so the ending and actually the whole song to me feels like she is trying to reassure her self that "No, I was there, i remember it all too well that it was love." Also at the end after exposing their relationship to the world in a 10 min song, she asks him "Just between us, you remember it too right?" insane lyricism, no lyric is without meaning. I could write about it for a long long time. Thank you for reacting to it! ♥

She said at one of her concerts that this song was written out of catharsis and venting but then it went out into the world and we made it a collage of memories of us screaming the lyrics, showing her our diaries with the words to this song written in it or the words to this song underneath our skin and that is how we changed the song all too well for her.

so glad i came across this channel. i appreciate y’all immensely for taking the time to read the lyrics and actually try to understand them. you appreciating her talent and lyricism is so amazing and so rare for men. not one sexist or downplaying comment about her music or her reputation and ‘girly pop breakup songs’ that everyone always magnifies, but simply just enjoying the music and learning why so many people love her. commendable. also, i don’t know if you knew this but she wrote the whole 10 min version when she was only 19/20! back when she first released it in 2012 she had to cut it down for it to fit into the album but now that she has the ability to re-record her old (stolen) records she took the chance to record the long-awaited 10 min version and it’s, as you saw, fantastic. cant wait to see what y’all do next. loving all the tswift vids but also just love your vibes. keep it up ❤️

Also someone probably already said it here but: scarf METAPHOR and one of you mentioned how hard it must be to sing this and because this is a fan fave she has often stated now how it used to be horrible to perform and now it’s about the experience with her fans so she finally happy singing it. She even has more recent lyrics about “crying in the bathroom about a guy whose name I can’t even remember now”.

My favorite thing about this is your comment on how HE should not have been dating someone so young. I just got out of a situationship with a man much older than myself that ended with him SA'ing me and trying to unalive me. Some people are blaming me and it's been really difficult. It's so nice to hear two men placing the responsibility on the person who is actually at fault. I really love your videos, your deep-dives into her lyrics, etc. I consider myself a Swiftie but I feel I come away from your videos with a deeper understanding of her lyrics. Please keep up with your amazing work!

So glad you enjoyed this song, it's considered her most fan-favorite song when it was 5 minutes but when she dropped the 10-minute version it blew us all away! So now you have to watch her 15-minute short film of this song! It explains what really happened with additional dialogue from the actors Dylan O'Brien (Maze Runner, Love and Monsters) and Sadie Sink (Stranger Things). She not only wrote all the lyrics and melody of this song, but she also wrote and directed this film (it won 4 awards). You will see why that age difference was only part of the problem. He has continued to this day to date women that are 20-22 when he's in his forties. The short film will blow you away! Looking forward to more of your Taylor reactions!

The song "the moment i knew" is talking about the same thing as the line "and then he watched me watch the front door all night, willing you to come and he said its supposed to be fun, turning 21" (how Jake Gyllenhaal didn't show up at her 21st birthday). This instance is the reason she has the song "22". Since her 21st birthday was such a let down, she celebrated her 22 as if it was a huge milestone. This song has become such a staple and its so fun

It's so mindblowing how this song transformed into what it is known today (one of her best written by far). She told us she and her band were just jamming during rehearsal (speak now tour prob) and she sang this raw for 10-15 mins straight. THANKFULLY the sound guy that day got it all on record and gave it to Mama Swift. The thought of her blurting out those words and expressing those emotions during that jam session makes me realize how truly hurt she must have been by this specific breakup. :(
