This song is heartbreaking because he sings “You never gave a warning sign” and she responds with “I gave so many signs.” It just shows that they have had miscommunication for so long that she just had to leave and move on.

They have two more songs together, Evermore from Taylor’s evermore album. They also worked together on Renegade a song from a project with Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) and Aaron Dessner. Aaron has produced all their songs together. Similarly, she has two songs with The Nationals, Aaron Dessner’s band. Coney Island on Taylor’s Evermore and The Alcott (aka one of my favorites ever) from The Nationals’ album. Happy discovery!

Taylor wrote it with him in mind but she was too afraid to ask him. Finally, she sent the song to him. He sent it back with the bridge added to it.

this is in my opinion one of taylor’s best songs and definitely her best duet ever! so heartbreaking and beautiful! ❤️

This was the first song I fell in love with after the first listen. A lot of songs are a slow build for me on Folklore/Evermore

Hi guys, Taylor wrote the song with William Bowery (Joe, her ex), and Justin Vernon wrote the bridge. She talks about it before the music starts. You should watch the Long Pond sessions special because she explains the writing process, and I'm sure you'll like it 🙂

This song was actually written by her and and her then boyfriend Joe Alwyn, they're both massive Bon Iver fans and they got Aaron to ask if Justin would want to be featured, he wrote the bridge to the song and then sent it to them and it was added to the song. So the song was technically written by all 3 but in an "individual way".

They sound so amazing together but their voices ALMOST clash - it's almost a perfect disharmony, which is perfection for this song. Once again. Genius.

When Bon Iver does that whoo-hooo thing towards the beginning (sorry- don’t know what it’s called either…😉) it’s haunting because it resembles a lonely animal howling but is still clearly a human voice, so it sounds primal, visceral and beautiful all at once.

Taylor said that her and joes favorite things were sad songs so I think that’s why they made so many together and also why in You’re Losing Me she says “how long could we be a sad song till we were too far gone to bring back to life”

I got to see exile as a secret song at my concert during the Eras tour and it was life changing.

In the documentary part Taylor said she was nervous to ask him to feature because it would suck if he said no, she was really excited for the opportunity to work with him! I think her wide taste in music impacts what she does in really interesting ways.

Yes, Taylor explained that this is 2 ex lovers meeting when the woman is with her new lover (first verse), and they start talking about their different opinions of the breakup ( to him it was out of the blue and as she says I gave you many chances and many signs that this was not working), and as the song progresses they are no longer listening to eachother and screaming. Him singing harder/ almost overpowering her in some parts and her lighter is intentional in the song, showing their dynamic in their relationship and their miscommunication.. Taylor and her ex wrote he song and she then asked Justin to feature on it and sent it to him, and he then added a bridge.

Since you guys really liked this song with them together, they have another song with Bon Iver on it as a feature called evermore from her album evermore. Just as beautiful and could most definitely hit you right in your c-spot

I am spellbound by these two voices and this song. Obsessed with it.

Love this song, glad you guys do too! Thought it was just me ;) You can almost see my house out Justin V's studio window, I'm a huge fan of him and Bon Iver. Justin's voice makes this song, but credit Taylor for her wonderful voice and contributions/collaboration. Lyrics are incredible. Makes you feel! That's what music is supposed to do, and this did. I'm a fan of Taylor now too ;) Swiftie I think they call it! Then they start playing Bon Iver songs when I shop at the grocery store and visit recreation centers here in Eau Claire, played on radio stations and recognized throughout the country? They made it!

One of my favorites of hers and probably my favorite duet Taylor has done.

Taylor has another song with a feature that is set up like this-the last time ft. Gary Lightbody on her Red album-where it’s not like a typical feature song and more of a collaborative piece between the two of them. I highly recommend you guys listen to it

What I can’t believe is that they recorded the two halves of this like a thousand miles apart. Yes def a C spot song! Elated that you guys reacted to this!!! Here’s the lore. Her then boyfriend under the pseudonym William Bowery actually wrote the first verse and music for it. Taylor overheard him playing it and she fell in love with it and wrote the rest with Bon Iver. She hinted to Aaron who is on the piano and one of the Folklore producers, that she hoped Bon Iver would be interested in collab-ing. Aaron having a close friendship with Bon Iver given their bandmates, made it happen. Bon Iver wrote the bridge “so step right out, there is no amount of crying I can do for you” verse. And a trifecta of poetic brilliance was created. Thanks again guys. Always love your reactions. ❤

This is my favorite song. Long mind sessions is so great

"Balancing on breaking branches". A brilliant line. Alliterative and loud, like trying to save a disintegrating relationship.

A few of Taylor's songs she has a feature sing the first verse and then she comes in, I've noticed mostly when the features are guys. It's that way in The Last Time, as well. That's also a great sad song. I think it's maybe because the song is supposed to be the couple speaking to each other, so it's just whoever "started" the conversation.

The official lyric video on her page hits hard just like Vigilante Shit. The back and forth of the lyrics is incredible! I totally recommend it.

On another note, I noticed the rapport among the three of you is reminiscent of what makes the Kelce brothers' podcast so successful -- just a little calmer, not so over the top. That easy ebb and flow is organic and can't be manufactured which leaves me surprised your subscriptions aren't, at a minimum, in the six figures. Taylor and her ex, Joe, wrote it together. She presented the lyrics to Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Justin said that he would never say that in this kind of a relationship fallout. He changed some of the lyrics to be more accurate to what he would say and this is the magic that came out. Makes you wonder what the original lyrics were.

Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) received the unfinished song and he wrote the amazing bridge for this, which occurs twice. He sent the bridge back to Taylor Swift and she was amazed by it and the rest is history. I’m assuming by giving him the first verse, she’s allowing the female to respond, which I understand. Also, giving him the first first may simply be in deference to Justin Vernon, who she REALLY respects
