Well. Actually no. Tuomas is kind of introvert and you wouldn't get much out of him. You would be better informed by watching documentaries that are made of the band as he opens up more when the interview is done in long format over days and weeks. For a shorter interview, you want Floor :)

The male singer is Tapio Wilska. He is a friend of the band and sang on a couple of songs from the album "Oceanborn", and since he also worked as a tour tech for Nightwish, they could invite him on stage to perform his parts live every show. The bass player here is Sami Vänskä, and if I'm not mistaken, this is his last tour with the band. P.S. And Emppu plays Washburn guitar here, not Jackson. :)

A lot of people, when they decide to get to know Tarja's era, just look at the DVD "End of an era" (which is wonderful too), but there are other things to know, after all, of Nightwish's 9 studio albums, 5 were recorded with Tarja. From the dvd "From wishes to eternity", I suggest as next songs "Swanheart", "Dead boy's poem" and "Walking in the air". These songs are three ballads. Thanks!

"The Pharaoh..." my secret gem from the vaults of time. I so love this song from the first time I heard it, perfectly placed to pick up the listener close to the end ot the epochal "Oceanborn" album. The last smash as it were, before "Walking in the Air" gently lets us go... I rarely hear it reacted to, or demanded (with NIGHTWISH, there are just soo many masterpieces this ought to fight to make the Top 10...), and this reaction just makes the instant that more special. Truly, this is a song where all the instruments get to shine, and they shine in a nighty blaze, both vocals included - and outstanding. :))) I hope this vid is shared the world over, 'cause I bet even a horde of "new" NIGHTWISH fans are oblivious to it. As a further step, I would REALLY love you to take a listen to "Beauty OF the Beast", a seldom-heard epic off their "Century Child" album. The "OF" is important, as there exists a NIGHTWISH song by the name of "Beauty AND the Beast" - good, but not so good as this one. The only drawback - no hi quality vid I know of. That too must have contributed to a certain neglect in the collective memory. But what a song it is! To my mind, it stands head to head with "Ghost Love Score" - minus the final note, which was Floor's creation anyway. :)) Go for it, Chase. \m/

Poor Anette just had too big shoes to fill in my opinion. Sometimes I can kick myself for not following them in the Anette period though, since it seems they made some of their best music then. Tapio Wilska is the guy here, who is doing the deep aggressive vocals. He is the vocalist of Finntroll, and has guest appeared in a couple of the older Nightwish songs, even on the most recent tour (Decades 2018) he sang live with them during this song which was on the setlist. Decades featured many songs that have not been played live in many years, and even some newer songs. Most of the songs on that setlist will never be played live again. It was like a time warp journey. For most of us who have been fans since the Tarja era, it was an incredible experience to have. This was also before Marko, the bassist here would be Sami Vanska, who departed nightwish due to "creative differences" if I remember correctly. This song was the first song I'd ever heard by nightwish back in 2000, after my mom had showed me. I use to be very into black metal and such. I fell in love immediately. my mom, having always been a metal head, had become a fan after my adopted brother sent her back a couple cds from Europe where he'd been stationed. Great review. For me, the live version is of course amazing but you do kind of lose some of the small nuances you hear in the album version (this song is from the Oceanborn album) Thanks again for your Insights and breakdown, Chase!

Regarding your questions about songwriting: I remember reading somewhere that the genesis of this song was when Emppu presented a very oriental/egyptian sounding riff to Tuomas and that the entire song was built around that riff. But I read that probably ten to thirteen years ago so I might misremember things. Also, your initial reaction was so priceless. That was the look of a man who came into this expecting symphonic metal and instead got a fistful of power metal right into the face. You should do more early Nightwish stuff. I mean, their current symphonic stuff is great, but don't look down on their power metal days.

The guy singing is Tapio Wilska. He was a guest vocalist on some of their songs before Nightwish hired Marco. Sami Vänskä was their bass player for their first few albums, and Marco replaced him when they did their Century Child album.

That contrast of voices is just amazing. A lot different from the harmonics with Marko and singer (Tarja, Annette or Floor). Hadn't heard this one in a while and, once again, your description is spot on. Kudos for catching that "double finger" slip up on the keyboard, it just goes to show that "Metal Mozart" is human after all. I'm gonna ask you again, Chase, that accent?. 😂

What a pleasant surprise to see a reaction to this wonderful classic! I'd love to see you take a side journey sometime into some of the lesser-known Nightwish songs--like, do a rough frequency analysis of the suggestions you get, pick a few that have gotten the *fewest*. For example, I don't think I've ever seen anyone--ever--do a reaction to "Beauty of the Beast" (not Beauty AND the Beast, different song--confusing, I know). I went looking, but I couldn't find a good-quality live version. I always had that song and Ghost Love Score back-to-back in my playlists, they're both long epics. Anyway, keep on keeping on and have a great day!

lyrics to the song "Get away from me! Take heed to thyself and see my face no more! For in the day Thou see my face Thou shalt die!" - Exodus 10: 28 A constellation of divine architecture built on Earth A holy harbour - Orion Nautical ascension to the firmament Ship-shaped barrows open my heart to the wisdom of this land Sailing with the Serpent Chimera of a fiendish sandman The Unicorn arrives with the westwind to dream His funeral "Thou art born for Horus dwells in Thee" Slumbering with the ebb and the flow of this foaming tomb "Thou art born for Seteh dwells in Thee" Reveal your face to me and guide me through the Stygian fields Enthral my soul to Sepedet's beams to serve Your will Sailing on the distant seas from darkness to deliverance Tales like the ocean written to the Draco's glance Ruling with the scythe of death you tear our philosophies apart An ancient starwalk to merge into the stars "Open thy veins for my venom Kiss the cobras with thy twisted tongue So shalt thou join the empyrean circus Where beggars mourn and seraphs dance In this twilight cathedral Shall I wed thee, O Bride of the Netherworld" Sailing on the distant seas... Join my soul the Hunter in the sky

You interviewing Tuomas? Truly a dream worth....chasing.... Heck what is wrong with me today. XD And all the questions have been answered already anyway. That performance is a great example of the time before they "realised" that they "don't need to show off anymore for the sake of it". So yeah, there is much to pay attention to and somehow you're the machine that does instantly notice every damn thing. I don't know what magic that is, but kudos! You said yes to the best genes!

This is one of my all time favorite songs by them. And this live is so awesome. Tapio growls his part and Sami does the bass (this live was after release Wishmaster album ...no Marco yet in the band). Good that you noted also the keyboard playing by Tuomas ... just grand as you explained...and one miss hit...makes it complete...he is, however, human still.

I think Tarja's vocals shine much more on the first few albums (this song is from the second album), because those albums have a much more power metal -style. And if you think about it, power metal usually has those high, soaring vocals that fit very well with the music, and operatic vocals are basically the same. Tarja's pretty much singing your typical power metal melodies in this song, but she's just doing it in a much more classical style.

Hee, I was just listening to this today and thinking you're going to have a field day with it once you get around to it. One of my absolute favourite NW songs, very ambitious one too for its time. Sometimes I'm just astounded by the fact that Tuomas wrote this stuff when he was barely even 20.
