@@canuckfans1994 Look, I get supporting your team and, yes, his hit on Naslund was dirty. However, not only did Bertuzzi suckerpunch him, he drove the head of an already unconscious man into the ice with the full weight of his body. That is 100% bitch. He won't drop the mitts? Ok, bang his ass into the boards every second he's on the ice, for every single game he ever plays against Vancouver for the rest of his career. Make him want to be a healthy scratch for fear of the beating he's gonna get if he skates. You don't suckerpunch someone from behind and then drive his head into the ice. It would have been bad enough if Bertuzzi would have thrown the punch and then let him fall (you can easily see in the replay that Moore was out from the punch). Following him down to the ice with his fist in the back of his skull was attempted murder. Bertuzzi should have never been allowed within 100 yards of a rink for the rest of his life.

On the guys getting their careers ended on seemingly mundane concussions: They all likely have a long concussion history and the hit you're seeing is just the last straw, not necessarily the worst one they've taken.

    1) At 1:51, Johnny Boychuk needed 90 little stitches near his eye. The eye itself was undamaged. 2) At 3:00, that was the second bad concussion Marc Savard received, on a clean hit from a former teammate. The first happened a year before on a dirty hit by Matt Cooke. Savard has spoken public about the severe depression and anxiety he has suffered. 3) At 5:49, Todd Bertuzzi pleaded guilty, but received no prison time, to an assault charge on Steve Moore, who suffered three fractured vertebrae in his neck. 4) It wasn't a career-ending "injury," but for me the saddest incident was what happened to Normand Léveillé in 1982. I was 12 years old and it's one of my earliest hockey memories. Léveillé was a promising 19-year-old, a potential star already playing his second NHL season with the Boston Bruins. One night, during the first intermission in the locker room, he suffered a brain aneurysm. He temporarily lost the ability to walk and talk. Doctors determined the aneurysm was caused by a congenital condition rather than anything on the ice. Now 60, he is married and has recovered enough function to operate a charity to help others with disabilities.

For most people who have never worn a neck guard they probably think it's the solution to what happened in the UK. For someone who grew up in a league where they were mandatory and seeing all the neck guards on the market, approximately 85% of the products out there will NOT provide the protection needed to avoid those freak accidents. They move up and down your neck the entire game and never truly sit still where you need them to. It can cut above the neck guard or below (if it's the type of guard without the bib you tuck under your shoulder pads/jersey). Not all freak accidents can be resolved with a quick fix. There's been many necks cut before and no one brought up neck guards because most people know they won't provide as much protection as most people would think.

about the Neck Protection debate, Lars Ehler of the Pittsburg Penguins actually had an interview during a training session and he effectively said. "I wore it in Finland in the youth leagues, because it was required to play. I wore it when I played Professionally in Sweden because it was required. I stopped wearing it when I came the the NHL and noticed no one else was wearing it, and the teams didn't provide one." pretty much once he was given the choice about using the neck guard, he chose to not use it.

The concussions might not have been the actual injury that ended their career. Concussions are cumulative. You get enough, and it's just too dangerous to play anymore, so you have to retire. Some of these might be a bad concussion, but they might have played on after that, and had more concussions later that lead to them retiring.

@@CoffeeMatt10 concussions are nothing new why suddenly people act like they are is annoying & frustrating. I think it's mostly because of boxing the fact that lately several boxers have died young &/or offed themselves. Regardless are many different levels & issues related to concussions & even now with all the focus no one knows for sure anything nor does everyone or even body respond the same to getting one or the suppose therapy in recovery from one. Each person is different & each body addresses concussions differently let we do the same thing for everyone & wonder why it doesn't work for most. Concussions aren't a ford assembly line you can't treat them or expect each to respond the same. I've had several 2 playing hockey in college many years ago. My worse was in a car accident when a semi truck driver drunk ran a redlight plowing into my car sending the car spinning around the intersection bouncing off several things like curbs & street poles before getting hit by a second car & spun back the other way ending up in a walmart parking lot on upside down. I had to be removed through the trunk of the car.

There are plenty of rule changes that have occurred because of safety. The Joni Pitkanen injury is a perfect example. Back then, for an icing to occur, the defense has to touch the puck after it crosses their own goal line. There were often times where a player from both teams would race for the puck. What Pitkanen experienced is exactly why they changed the rule to hybrid icing. There was a high risk for injuries, because if something went wrong during the chase, there was no way to stop before crashing into the boards. Now they just have to reach their faceoff circle for icing to occur.

  • @rossmillsap
    @rossmillsap6 ай бұрын

The one at around 5:30 had some previous history before that happened. The player who was attacked had made a dirty hit in a previous game to the Canucks star player, no penalty on the play, no suspension by the NHL. In the game where he got injured, the refs were slanted in their calls and the Canucks wanted revenge and this was the result. I honestly think we are going to see another situation like this soon because the stuff that lead to that situation (refs not calling the proper penalty, NHL Department of Player Safety not doing their job properly) is getting very prevalent again.

Yes, I was wearing a facemask with my helmet but at the time it was a newer style with the wire cage above and below, and a visor across the middle. It was a hybrid facemask. When I was a little kid I witnessed my dad (who was playing in the beer league at the time) a good percentage of his forehead get sliced open due to an collision and one of his buddies skates doing the damage 😨. I play professional hockey and have played professionally in the US and Europe. What NEEDS to change is ambulances need to be on site and ready in every European professional league. Especially with what we have just seen with Adam Johnson. Hockey is WAY too fast and violent to not have proper medical responses ready. Maybe it wouldn’t have saved Adam, but it would have given him more of a chance. Skimping on trauma response in hockey is unacceptable and it only happens in European leagues. If a league can’t afford it then unfortunately you need to dissolve the league.

On neckguards, part of the issue is designing one that doesnt "guide" the skate. Lots of designs would lead to a skate sliding up the guard toward players eyes/mouth/face. Mobility is a lesser concern but the biggest design challenge is making something that absorbs the skate rather than just pushing it to the players face.

Players are idiots. They need to realize everyone on the ice worked hard to play at this level. They show No respect to anyone... Most of the worst assaulted are just that victims of some idiots like the Hole who killed a guy with an intentional skate to the throat.l. Now if you can't figure that out your not evolved at all .my guess is a room temperature I Q

@@fitzgeraldlansanah5306 Was never a problem before yup accidents happen ... What you are seeing is intentional like the dickhead kicking the guy in the throat. That league obviously tried to review it and find a way to say an accident. They Couldn't ! Obvious!!!!!

Honestly it depends on how many times a situation occurs or how serious it was. Adam Johnson will be the reason neck guards will be mandatory gear across all leagues. Just like how Bill Masterton made helmets mandatory, Jacques Plante made goalie masks a thing and Manny Malhotra made protective visors mandatory. Guys have ear protection and mouthguards now. They used to never have that. There's concussion protocols and hybrid icing too. Things that didn't exist for a long time. Currently I'd say the mandatory neck guards are the only big thing to change from a safety standpoint. Guys are still going to hit and sometimes they will be dangerous, that is just the nature of the beast unfortunately but it's a long way from the wild west lawlessness we used to have

@@nickhammer6408All American major leagues are like this. It took a spectator being killed to convince the NHL to put catch nets above the end zones.

Henry Boucha's injury was horrific. He and Dave Forbes got into after Forbes laid a clean but rough check on Henry. Henry through a small cold cock punch at Dave after regaining his balance. Dave vowed to retaliate. Later in the game Dave skated right over to Henry and swung the butt-end of his stick at Henry's face, damaging his eye severely. Henry's vision would be permanently impaired and he retired shortly after. Dave was suspended 10 games for the incident and also was charged but not convicted of aggravated assault. Many believe that the light suspension was due to racism toward Henry's Native American ancestry. Their is an interesting video on Henry's hockey career and life after the incident on PHA (Pro Hockey Alumni)'s channel.

Millions of hockey games from minor to pro only 2 blades to the neck that caused death. It sucks but there is no need to change anything. I took my neck guard off first chance I got. Never had any issue.

CTE can end your career the first time you get a concussion. Lots of times however this isnt their first. theyve been playing for 15+ years before the NHL and get them there too. Its also an NFL injury that ends careers.

This is why I say hockey and rugby are the 2 physically toughest sports out there, and some of these concussions are 2nd and 3rd degree, which case hella CTE and do a lot of damage to the brain. Never underestimate head injuries

In high school I came really close to losing an eye or 2. In a goalie, so I think it was my junior year, but it wasn’t in high school hockey it was travel before high school season started. 3 on 1, guy takes a shot, I go down and make the save, rebound comes out to guy on my left, I push over and stretch out, he knuckles it hard into my mask. It falls in front of me and I fall forward on my stomach searching for it. Guy follows up his shot and tries to poke at the puck before I fall on top of it, it’s right under my neck. He misses and his stick catches the bottom of it mask and flips it off. Maybe half a second later, the third guy on the left who didn’t take the first shot or the rebound, crashes the net just like the guy on the right did but half a second behind. He gets bumped by my defenseman who was trying to keep him off me, and his skate comes straight up and as I’m turning my face left so that my face doesn’t hit the ice, his skate comes right across my face. Blade comes down on the bridge of my nose and drags diagonally up in between my eyes and then above my right eyebrow. I hardly even felt a thing. Didn’t even realize I had been cut until I got up and a bunch of people around me on both teams and a ref were like oh shit are you ok you’re bleeding. And then I felt something dripping down my face and reached up and it was pouring out blood. Dont ask me why, probably because I’m a goalie so I’m crazy, but I just said yeah I’m fine, wiped my jersey over my cut, picked up some snow from the ice and just held it on the cut for a minute until the bleeding pretty much stopped. Then put my helmet back on and played the rest of the game, I think it was only like a minute into the second period too. And afterwards I questioned why not only my coach but the reffs even let me stay in and continue to play when it was still slightly bleeding. I mean this was youth hockey still lol. I mean I wanted to stay in, but as a ref myself, no shot I’d be letting a kid stay in the game while he’s still bleeding without getting some medical attention first. The hot sisters of the kids we were playing against that were standing behind my goal sure looked impressed that I just sucked that up though I remember that and feeling like a badass for a second lol. At least until a minute or so later when my sweat starting finding its way into the cut. And that shit hurt like a bitch lol

Concussions can be career ending. Concussions has caused many problems with people's personal life, not just their sport careers. There was an incident or so that it turned fatal( only speculating since ive not been able to keep track of all of them). It was only these past several recent years up to now that we took Concussions very seriously.
